I have always liked the name but I just hate that there are so many...

can you suggest something like it? does popularity put you off too? or should i just stick to what I like...hmmmm

I don't know any girls with the name Sophia, two called Sophie.

It's a lovely name BTW.

wigglesrock · 04/07/2011 08:51

As well as a Sofia, I have an Olivia (I know, no imagination Grin) I think it depends where you live, I'm tripping over Aoifes, Niamhs, Charlies, Conors, Katies and was at park yesterday and there were 4 Elijahs under 3!! When I went to primary school, there were 4 of us with the same name in one class - didn't bother me at all, I don't know anyone with my name now and I even saw it mentioned on here last week Grin

Georgimama · 04/07/2011 08:41

Mind you every Tom Dick and Harry is called George now and that didn't stop me using it for DS.

Georgimama · 04/07/2011 08:41

Is it really popular? I don't know any and there aren't any in nursery/reception at DS's school. I have actually chosen Sophia for the bump instead of Isabella (which I have wanted to call a daughter since I was about 6) as that is just too popular now.

I have a DD who is almost 25 and she is Sophie. She was the only one in her year at school and the only one at college. School in Scotland college in Guildford. I think it is a beautiful name. I think Sophia sounds old ladyish.

swash · 03/07/2011 14:59

I know one Sophie, and no Sophias.

Grabaspoon · 03/07/2011 13:22

I know 3 Sophie's aged 6,11,23
I know 1 Sofia aged 2

MEBMotherof3 · 03/07/2011 13:15

I had a Sophia in April. We took ages to decide on her name (were convinced she was a boy!). Also didn't want a name that was too popular and Sophia wasnt too high in the 2009 list......Went to my local post natal group to find 3 Sophias in a group of 9 babies!!!! Oh well! Still love the name and everyone says how pretty it is. Conversely, I don't think I've met any Jacks in the last 5 years of baby/toddler groups, honestly! So just shows you should go with the names you love and not worry about how popular you think it is. Sophia IS a lovely name Grin

Stars22 · 03/07/2011 08:21

I know 2 Sophia's one is a newborn and one is 8 years old. (one is american)

I prefer Sophie but am bias as thats my name lol, I have always liked my name but at times when I was younger have felt it was very popular.

bruffin · 02/07/2011 23:38

3, all teenagers and from greek/italian families.

squiggleywiggler · 02/07/2011 23:34

I have a Sofya. It's the Russian version of Sophia and is only 2 syllables pronounced Sof (rhymes with toff) Ya (rhymes with the 1st syllable of mother).

It's beautiful and I haven't met another.

acsec · 02/07/2011 21:06

The following names are from Substitutes for: Sophia
Seraphina ? a frilly princess name with recent starbaby appeal and an angelic meaning
Sapphira ? a pretty gemstone name, provided you can get over the slightly naughty namesake. (If you?re not familiar with the biblical story of Ananias and Sapphira, click here.)
Sephora ? a name with biblical roots. Sephora is the Greek form of Zipporah, Moses? wife.
Sonia (or Sonya or Sonja) ? a sweet Russian diminutive of Sophia that is familiar but far less common in the U.S.

If it?s the nickname ?Sophie? that really appeals to you, you might like:

Sophronia ? an Italian name meaning ?sensible? (which is certainly similar to ?wise?). Sophronia was coined by Italian poet Torquato Tasso in the 16th century. Though it?s elaborate, it shortens easily to Sophie.

Ten Sophia/Sofias,and only one Sophie.

I love the name (and love Safiya too, Kreecher).

Sonia is nice too (Russian diminutive for Sofia). I love the Mexican name Xochitl (pr. SO-shee) and the Irish name Síofra (pr. SHEE-uh-fra)

munstersmum · 01/07/2011 18:09
