39 weeks: quick poll on girls name ..?

Hi,
We've not long to go now and we have a shortlist of girls names but are finding it difficult. Any opinions or thoughts? Surname is a short, single syllable ...

Audrey
Eliza
Evelyn
Hannah
Martha
Matilda
Norah

Quite like older-fashioned names but worried some could have associations that we're not too keen on (you can probably spot the ones I mean).

Sorry for the lack of originality of the post. And thanks for any response.

Audrey - Gorgeous. My absolute fave!!
Eliza- boring
Evelyn- not keen
Hannah - boring
Martha - Gorgeous!!
Matilda - like
Norah - Brilliant name!!

rednblack · 30/06/2011 16:24

ooh .. Eleanor. Very nice - hadn't though of that, especially as it can also be shortened to Nora. I think that's going on the list then. Thanks!

All really wonderful names, hard to choose!
Matilda favorite, Martha least (a bit slow somehow). Norah seems the least friendly in a way.

MelinaM · 29/06/2011 23:59

Love MarthaSmile Nora's lovely too, I'd go with Eleanor nn Nora, oohhh but Nell is another lovely name! Sorry, I'm not helping I know!

Mabel?

chocjunkie · 29/06/2011 20:25

martha!

Hedwig3 · 29/06/2011 16:54

Nitty Norah hasn't existed for a long time now.

SloganLogan · 29/06/2011 16:40

Evelina is pretty, and you could have Lina as nickname instead of Eve/Evie.

fedupofnamechanging · 29/06/2011 16:22

If you like Evelyn, then go for it. If you make a point of always referring to your baby by her full name, rather than Evie, then others will follow your example. evelyn is not the same name as Evie/Eve

rednblack · 28/06/2011 21:54

Wow, thanks for all the responses.

I am worried about how popular Evie is as a name and this means we might not go for it. It's shame as Evelyn is a family name which we were both really keen on ...

The other worry I had about Norah (alongwith Nora Batty) was "Nitty Nora the Bug Explorer" - don't know if that rings any bells for anyone from primary school days? Maybe nowadays its no longer used to describe the head lice nurse.

Thanks again for all the replies though. Loads of food for thought!

From your list I would go for matilda. I love tilly as a nn

mumatron · 28/06/2011 21:17

My dd2(6m) is Eliza. I don't know any others in RL

I know 1 nora, 2 evelyn's and a work colleague is planning on having a martha.

smother · 28/06/2011 21:17

All lovely names.

I love Norah (despite thoughts of Nora Batty and Bloody nora...), Martha, Audrey and Eliza. If I had to vote for one, I'd go for Martha.

Matilda and Evelyn ok.

Less keen on Hannah (bit dull to my ears, probably because I know many adults and children with this name).

mathanxiety · 28/06/2011 21:15

Love Norah, Eliza, Matilda and Audrey.

Hannah is a bit dated imo -- DS's class had a lot of Hannahs who would now be 18ish. Martha always makes me think of hens, clucking and feathers for some reason. Evelyn is nice but there are a lot of Evies.

olddeuteronomy · 28/06/2011 21:12

Audrey - not keen, but can see it will probably become quite cool
Eliza - lovely
Evelyn - don't like, especially shortened to Evie
Hannah - lovely
Martha - quite like
Matilda - quite like, people will say it is 'trendy' though
Norah - like, probably most controversial choice (people will mention Nora Batty)

In order, would go for Eliza, Hannah then Norah or Martha (Norah if you are v bothered about popularity)

UndiscoveredApprentice · 28/06/2011 18:34

Audrey - bit dated
Eliza -prefer elizabeth
Evelyn - love it
Hannah - don't see this as an old name
Martha - not so keen
Matilda - not so keen
Norah - npt so keen

cantpooinpeace · 28/06/2011 18:05

Matilda

Ihavewelliesbuttheyrenotgreen · 28/06/2011 18:05

Audrey- too old lady-ish imo
Eliza- nice but v popular
Evelyn- nice but popular and nicknames Eve/Evie v popular
Hannah- nice, classic
Martha- quite popular but no too much
Matilda- v popular
Norah- I quite like this esp this spelling, its unusual and quite pretty

Mrsfluff · 28/06/2011 18:04

A vote for Martha here, with Eliza in 2nd place.

birdofthenorth · 28/06/2011 18:02

Audrey or Nora (better without the H, looks like Noah!)

All great names, good shortlist Smile

Rhubarbgarden · 28/06/2011 17:47

Norah or Eliza

CandiceMariePratt · 28/06/2011 17:03

Audrey

swash · 28/06/2011 17:02

Audrey is a great name.

mich54321 · 28/06/2011 14:26

Agree with oohlaalaa

  1. Eliza
  2. Evelyn
  3. Hannah
SloganLogan · 28/06/2011 14:13

Forgot Norah! I'd put it after Eliza. OK but prefer Nina.

SloganLogan · 28/06/2011 14:13

In order of preference...

Hannah - lovely, classic name
Audrey - nice, due a revival
Evelyn - lovely but super-popular if you count all the Ava/Eva/Eve/Evies as well
Eliza - too parlourmaid-nicknamey, prefer Elizabeth as full name, lots of nickame options including Eliza
Martha - a bit dull-sounding
Matilda - dislike, a bit of a fad name
