Full version of Effy/Effie?

Hello,

This is my first time on here, despite being nearly 38 weeks pregnant. I have been lurking for quite a while though. DH and I are still deliberating the name for DD1 and really like Effy/Effie. We don't, however, particularly like Euphemia.

Does anyone have any ideas for what her full name could be- we feel that Effy is a little bit like a nn, so wouldn't like to only have Effy as her full name. I really love Felicity- would it be strange to have Effy as a shortened version of Felicity?

Thanks!

My full name is Fiona-Elizabeth but my nickname is Effie because my initials are F E and then my surname. So on everything my name was always written as FE so people started calling me Effie.

Ethel?

Bumply · 01/07/2011 18:18

My gran was known as effie. Her name was Frances

I think usually for Euphemia, at least in Scotland. Femie also short for Euphemia. I know an Effie-Jean, not short for anything, but the name she was given.

The effies I know are greek and it's short for Efterpi, Efthymia, Efthalia or Eftychia (meaning hapiness).

I love the name Effie but had exactly the same problem - not fond of Euphemia and thought Effie by itself was a bit nick-namey. I personally reckon that any name starting with F could be shortened to Effie (our DD is known by her first initial a lot of the time, as is my niece and a close friend), but I couldn't find an F name I really loved either (and now having a boy anyway!) :)

I know an Effie who's full name is Elfreda, very cute but also cool for a teenager

I know a Ffion whose nn is Effie :)

Thanks! Really helpful... you've mostly confirmed that it isn't really short for Felicity... need to make some decisions- she's due in 2 weeks! How long after she's born do we have to register her birth?

I'm Frances Emily and am known as Effie (FE = Effie)

PipFEH · 28/06/2011 20:24

My friend is Frances and is known as Effie. I think traditionally it is short for Elizabeth, although not positive.

Effel? Grin

colditz · 28/06/2011 12:35

I'd have thought Elizabeth would be the obvious one

mejon · 28/06/2011 12:30

DD goes to school with a little girl called Ephelia - never heard it before but it is very pretty.
