There is only ONE appropriate answer when someone tells you their childs name IMHO

"His names Herod? How lovely!"

End of.

SkipToTheEnd · 26/06/2011 20:36

I do sometimes :o

But always with a smile!

I just cannot beleive how rude some people are. I always just say 'aww that's sweet, lovely etc' unless I ind it very odd and then I ask the meaning of it so it shows I'm interested. I have heard a couple of names I truly didn't like but softened once I heard what they meant and the reasoning behind them.

Becaroooo · 26/06/2011 20:36

My youngest is named Toby.

My cousin (middle class, pilot, alcoholic and general twat) told my aunt "thats a dogs name!"

'Caspar'
'Ooohh, as in the ghost?! ha ha!'
'No, as in the bible you twats'

Well, actually just because I really like it but honestly checkout woman/midwife/neighbour; Zip It

Caspar was one of the 'three kings' btw, though I'm sure you all know that.

Bumperlicioso · 26/06/2011 20:29

Dd1's name sounds like sanitary wear according to mumsnet Grin (said while I was actually on the thread saying the name!)

SkipToTheEnd · 26/06/2011 20:26

I call him Roo as well, we all do. But she seems incapable of using Reuben on cards etc. She introduces him as Roo to friends. She just won't accept I didn't take her opinion into account!

After a year she admitted she regretted the fall out and missing his birth which was a huge deal for her!

Reuben. I thought people would go with the 'are you Jewish' thing but never expected the black thing tbh.

I know it's not hugely popular on MN but where I lived it was never used. Then we moved and have met a few here but I still love it. It was the only one I could settle on. The other choices were Matthew and Oliver which just didn't seem right at the time. My sister wanted Riley or Ethan both of which I didn't like at all.

We are talking again now but it's taken some time to actually get over it! She loves DS to bits now but prefers to call him Roo {hmm}

PrincessScrumpy · 26/06/2011 20:20

I cannot imagine putting up with a relative calling dc names other than their own. I wouldn't even expect the to use a nn version unless dh and I did.

We only got positive reactions for dd1 - Lydia, but we're expecting more of a reaction with the names we have for our twins (due Sept), who will be Heidi Matilda and Kitty Alice (might be Alice Kitty but we'll decide when we see her and see how brave we feel). Kitty is a family name on my dad's side (great aunt's name) and we were reminded of it at my Nanna's funeral a few weeks ago. I mentioned it to dh expecting him to pull a face as he tends to like quite classic names, but he really likes it. We're just bracing ourselves. Lydia, Heidi and Kitty sounds nice to me. Not telling people in rl until they're born as it seems to be acceptable to be rude if the baby hasn't arrived yet.

Fimbo · 26/06/2011 20:19

My mother is awful, especially about names she considers to be catholic.

jugglingmug · 26/06/2011 20:11

Ex-Dh's mad aunt 'What you calling her then?'
me 'Lois'
MA 'Ooo, I dont like all these modern names, what's wrong with Louise'
me 'It's a biblical name, so that's pretty old'
MA 'You're talking rubbish, it's not in the bible'

Cue me turning up next time with a bible with the passage highlighted Blush...she's still not convinced.

My sister said my chosen name for DS was a black mans name too. Then promptly refused to speak to me for 8 weeks after I said I'd call him what I like. She was meant to be my birth partner too, had to find new ones :(

She kept saying it and also said she'd steal him away and register him herself if I insisted on calling him that. I put up with it for weeks until she had told so many people that I had her neighbours saying the same thing ' oh the only person I knew with that name was black...' ummm, Fuck Off - I barely know you! I couldn't care less if the only person you knew with that name was a rainbow coloured leprechaun serial killer.

If I ever have another baby no one will know the name until I've given birth!

MinnieBar · 26/06/2011 19:57

DS - Oscar - my nan said 'I thought you were joking'. She loves it now.

DD2 - Alice - my parents said 'Well, it wouldn't be our first choice'.
Well, exactly - you don't get any choice. Oh and they named me a feminine version of a man's name, so either I get called the male version or people just mis-hear and call me whatever they like. Score, parents!

ThePathanKhansWoman · 26/06/2011 19:54

Meant to add i love Anna.

ThePathanKhansWoman · 26/06/2011 19:51

My friend told me dd would be "boring and overlooked" Confused. Her names
Anna, quite plain i know and everywhere, and she was named for my beloved Aunt who'd died the year before.

superjobeespecs · 26/06/2011 19:40

womd??!! im getting thicker by the day :( womb womb womb!!!

fairydoll · 26/06/2011 19:25

Of DD1's name Next door neighbour said 'oh well i suppose you can always change it!' Name was catherine which must be one of the most established , least controversial names ever.

superjobeespecs · 26/06/2011 18:52

growing in my womd Blush bloody daft brush i am Grin

superjobeespecs · 26/06/2011 18:51

my main bug bear is spelling of DDs name or pronouncing it (its a very common, slightly chavvy name which i didnt know was even a name let alone chavvy) and its spelt in the french way its to die for :) DS is still growing but everyone in the family refers to him by his name except MIL who has no problem with his name just seems to call him his middle name by accident a lot.

suzikettles · 26/06/2011 18:36

Sorry Blush

Although, what I should have made clearer was that, as far as anyone was aware at the time, gm had never known any animal who shared my name. I think she just really, really didn't like it.

Clearly lots of children have names that are also sometimes used for pets. Which is absolutely fine. If there's never been a dog called ds's name then I'd be very surprised. It'd make a good name for an Irish Setter, an animal ds shares many characteristics with.

Um the actress is called Sophia Loren. And Loren is pronounced quite differently to Lauren. It's Lor-REN, while Lauren is LAUR-en.

Twit · 26/06/2011 18:04

I have never revealed a name until after the baby has been named, so far we haven't had it too bad except with DD.
DH told MIL's over the phone that she had been born etc etc and that we were calling her Nellie. I could hear them shouting at him down the phone 'you can't call a child that' etc etc until he hung up.
They never call her Nellie and never write it down (on cards etc) and if they introduce her it's always with an eye-roll 'it wasn't our choice' type thing.
Twats.
Am thinking of telling them this LO will be called Jasper and see how they like them apples. (they'll hate it btw)
