and another " and how am I meant to spell that!!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Becaroooo · 27/06/2011 14:38

In the bible Rebecca was the wife if Issac, so yes, it is hebrew in origin, albeit spelt Rebekah.

I really like biblical names, both my dc have them.

Not Herod though Grin

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 27/06/2011 14:32

Becaroooo, Becci, as she insists on spelling it, is my favourite niece! And it's a lovely name. Stupid Uncle Peter! (Isn't that in the Bible?)

Becaroooo · 27/06/2011 14:29

oh dear Smile
Never thought of my name as "too jewish"
My sons names are so.....normal and I still got comments!
They both have the smae initial which, apparently, is terrible Hmm
I think unless a name will mean a child will be mercilessly bullied, then call them what you like. If they hate it, they can legally change it when they are 18 (a cousin of mine did just that and 2 other cousins are only ever called by their middle name, as is my MIL)

birdofthenorth · 27/06/2011 14:26

I get of "oh, what made you pick that?" Angry -we like it, obviously!

Here's a tip: if you say "awww, what's his/her name?" and don't like the answer, turning to the baby and saying "hiiii little " is the best bet!!

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 27/06/2011 01:15

My uncle thought my niece's name was too Jewish, Rebecca. Not like David, or Sarah or any other pretty standard Old Testament name, then?

Mousesmummy · 27/06/2011 00:34

When pg with dc 4 after 3 dd's we told my mum that if dc was a boy he would be Gabriel
"well I hope you have another girl then " Smile

emsies · 27/06/2011 00:05

Hehe- quite a few of the more unusual names earlier on in this thread would get me thinking similar comments to the ones typed!! I do think if you choose odd/unusual names people will react to them.

However I hope I'm polite enough in real life to not react that way!

cece · 26/06/2011 23:43

Yes it is a condom! His name is a nn that people sometimes use for a condom! LOL

emmanumber3 · 26/06/2011 22:53

Well, both of my DS's have very bog-standard "top 10 names" (we chose them because they were our favourite names - to hell with if everyone else was using them too), and had no negative comments at all until we moved house 3 years ago.

Our new elderly neighbour (who we've since discovered is more than a little odd) asked what the boys names were - when he heard them he said "ah, lacking in imagination I see" Hmm.

emmanumber3 · 26/06/2011 22:48

Cece - What is DS1's name? I thought a "French Letter" was a condom?

lostinindia · 26/06/2011 22:40

My Father on hearing we'd called DS Noah said 'oh you have, have you'.

lazylula · 26/06/2011 21:58

With ds2 family member asked where we had got the name from in a kind of oh my god why on earth did you choose that? Same side of the family have referred to the name as being posh.
When I was pregnant with ds2 I told a friend one of the girl's names we had as a possible, she told me she really didn't like it. She hasn't commented now that we have called dd it 3 years later!

Beauregard · 26/06/2011 21:54

People usually just look like this Hmm when they hear dd1's name

cece · 26/06/2011 21:52

DD - lots of people asked if we had made it up? Hmm. No it is a normal name ffs!

DS1 - my mum asked me why I had called him after a 'French letter'? I asked her what a French letter was and she has never mentioned it again. MIL never said anything but could say his name out loud till he was about 12 months old.

DS2 - no comments as far as I know as it is a very popular name.

Rhubarbgarden · 26/06/2011 21:52

My father asked me what made us choose the name Audrey. He then said 'hmm', stared around the room, sucked on his cigarette and said 'I like Anna'.

Oh well in that case...

PelvicFloor0fSteel · 26/06/2011 21:50

People are so rude!

DS2's name has already been mentioned on here, MIL's response:
"Is that a real name? I've never heard of it before (it's been around for years and is a proper name). I'm going to need some time to get my head around it (you've got his whole life)."

After she'd spoken to SIL (who, I believe, gave her a bit of an earful) MIL called back to say it was quite nice really.

We'd really struggled to come up with a name at all, I love DS2's name but I'm still not confident how well it goes with DS1's name and that was our first response so it was a bit painful.

LorettaMasonPotts · 26/06/2011 21:47

ningthemerciless - I was given my grandmother's surname as my middle name - as you say it's an old Scottish family custom.

Causes no end of confusion here in England though when I have to give my full name - no-one believes it's a middle name, they think it's a hyphenated surname.

(A bit like Lulu's real name: Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie).

LeaveYourDignityAtTheDoor · 26/06/2011 21:46

I always get some strange looks and mispronouciations of DS1 name.

His name is Colm.

Mumleigh · 26/06/2011 21:27

My DS is adopted and when I phoned my sister to tell her we had been matched with a baby all she said was that his name was ghastly!

manicinsomniac · 26/06/2011 21:26

My children's father is Brazilian. They've never met him (even though there's a 4 year age gap - long story!) but we go to Brazil when we can and I wanted them to have some sense of cultural connection so I gave them pass-as-British first names and Hispanic middle names. I admit the result sounds a little odd and fussy:

Savannah Gabriella Fernanda
Jessica Giovanna Pietra

But my mother's reponse was downright rude (though, now I'm not hormonal I think the first one's kind of funny)

With Savannah: "Can I get that on a fridge magnet, I'm going to need an easy reference point"

and with Jessica: "Good God, not again, those poor children."

MissHonkover · 26/06/2011 21:25

Blimey, SkipToTheEnd, your sister (and her vile neighbours) sounds like a really horrible person. I can't understand why anyone would criticise anyone's choice of name for their child, but to be racist with it is just awful.

Reuben is GORGEOUS.

mumblebum · 26/06/2011 21:20

Ahh apparently my name is chavvy too LPP, despite the fact that I pre-date the term chav by quite a few years!

Littlepurpleprincess · 26/06/2011 21:13

I've read comments on MN about DS name, apparantly it's one of them chavvy, made up names (think Jayden).....apart from it being a very old hebrew name that is.....

PurpleStrawberry · 26/06/2011 21:04

TheSecondComing - thank you. People sometimes assume I'm being pretentious, I'm not, I'm Hispanic!

I love your children's names too, Clara and Francis are so strong and distinguished.

openerofjars · 26/06/2011 20:48

Yes, but does that still stand if, for example, they've decided to name the poor wee thing after a French cartoon character who lives in a small village and beats up Romans?

I tried not to say anything, I did.
