When we told my fil (arse) what we had called dd1 he told me " you can't call her that it's a black girls name" Shock
and another " and how am I meant to spell that!!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Whilst you ponder on how strange mil/dm/fil...etc reactions are to these names spare a thought for one Plaxico Burress.
He is an NFL star and his name is african and means peace. It still makes me think of a big plastics corporation though.

My point, whatever you think of names there is almost always a meaning behind these names as names have to start somewhere and often mean something totally strange. shirlee/shirley means bright meadow. I can imagine whoever first called their child that would of got some odd glances.

Next time you have to defend your choice in name to mil look up their name meaning, it might surprise them

we've had wierd reposes to both our little boys names.
First born is Otis, weve has the ....isnt that a black name` quiet a few times, shocking. We have had old men singing an Otis Reading song on the bus to him though after someone asked his name, it was lovely. One fella started singing & then an other man started whistling!! it got a round of applause from fellow passengers :)
New baby boys name is Tollo, middle name Paz. MiL said it sounded like an industrial cleaner :( we love it though.
Both me & hubby have top five most popular names for our D.O.B so we wanted something nice but different for them.
If we have a girl next (one more maybe?) she will be called Romy Tove.

Skiptotheend - DS3 is called Reuben, Roo for nn! I DID get the "You can't call him that, it's a Jewish name" from my (extremely) racist mother. But I LOVE his name, and he is named after my ex-P's grandad.

DS2 is called Ayden, and according to MN, his name is chavvy. I don't see how, as it was my great-grandads' name.

DS1 is called Logan, which now seems to be extremely popular, but when I named him over 9 years ago, I had heard of NO-ONE called Logan, and it wasn't even in the top 100 names.

DD is called Jade, which I agree, is VERY common in her age group (13yo), but when I chose her name, I was living in the Hebrides, and it was unheard of. I moved down south just before she was born, and when she got to pre-school, there were 3 Jade's in her year! So much for an uncommon name...

WaftyCrank · 01/07/2011 14:02

'Well I hope you realise he'll get bullied and called gay at school'

'What like that female singer with the eyepatch?'

'Why don't call him Sebastian instead?'

His name is Gabriel.

my FIL has occasionally called my daughter 'Amy' instead of either her real name (Amelia) or her per name of Millie. Have corrected him twice, but he still bought a birthday balloon for her first birthday with 'AMY' written on it. Nearly caused an argument (me: 'whose Amy?', him: 'couldn't fit Amelia or Millie on the balloon. I like Amy'), but I took revenge in the end by 'accidentally' bursting the balloon after they had left.

Hummpf I would NEVER call a child by any other name than the one their parents had chosen.

BelleEnd · 01/07/2011 13:46

DuelingFanjo Bob is so bloody cool! I never even thought about it with mine, but surely there is no cooler name than Bob for a little lad. And Bobby! Oh God. I want another child now. :o

LolaRennt · 01/07/2011 13:43

Just to clarifiy the preveious poster was on an American website where she was told Marcus was a black name.

I had never met a white Marcus till I came to the UK. Marcus is a nice name though and why a name should be considered black or white seems ridiculous to me. Confused

MsChanandlerBong · 01/07/2011 12:38

Verin - In that instance I would be tempted to change her name!! For example, if she prefers Granny, refer to her as Nana. Maybe then she will understand it from your pov!

Verin · 01/07/2011 12:34

Our most annoying responce wasnt negative so much as dismissive, Step-MIL said

'O I thought you would call him that' with an annoying knowing smile. Angry

Then to make matters worse she shortened it and despite repeated corrections that we dont call him that she still does! We do not call him Will'S', ever. Hmm

My Dad once said to me when I was Pg that we couldn't call the baby Avril (if it was a girl) as he was made to do country dancing with a girl of the same name who had terrible BO, her nickname was smelly Avril (original!).

We had a boy and named him Harry after my Grandad, one of the sweetest men.

ComradeJing · 01/07/2011 11:15

We waited about 48 hours to name DD and got a range of comments from 'beautiful' to 'that's very unusual.'

My DH mentioned a few names we were thinking about to my MIL who told him she would refuse to call any grand child of hers one of those names.

Apparently this is quite a family thing and happens a lot within the family. There is even one child who was called one name by one parent and one name by the other parent. Neither was the birth cert name. They're a bunch of loons.

oldspeckledtam · 01/07/2011 10:57

My husbands cousin called her baby Cash. When his aunt rang to tell us she said, "He's called Cash but I'm going to get them to change it."

My son is 'Evil and Sneaky' according to here. His name is Edgar. To be fair, this conversation would have been about 3 years ago and I've noticed a change in feeling since then!

FairyArmadillo · 01/07/2011 10:36

According to another ongoing thread my son's name is overdone to death and boring. Despite being aware that baby name threads do get nippy, that stung a bit! He's called Ethan- I knew it was popular but I've loved the name for years, long before it became top 20, and I just liked it!

79monica · 01/07/2011 10:25

When my friend told her mum that she would be calling her new daughter Lola, her mum said that she couldn't give a baby a prostitute's name Shock

Quenelle · 01/07/2011 10:23

I know a couple who have just had a boy and called him Rocky. Apparently everyone - friends and family alike - has told them they are being ridiculous. Which is rather rude IMO.

DuelingFanjo · 01/07/2011 10:03

my son is 'bob', just Bob as a first name. One old lady said, 'oh well, that's nice and easy to spell' and we get a bit of 'bob bob bob bobbing along'. His middle name is Joseph so we also get funny looks for the BJ.

I like it, it suits him and if he ever wants to be a country and western singer then bobby Joe has a ring to it ;)

The other name I liked was Salvatore.

Firestone · 01/07/2011 09:23

My son (DC1) is called Jonah, my MIL made much if not liking this, topped off by my FIL saying 'well don't blame us when he comes to you when he's older saying he hates you'. Right; thanks, woah baby bubble rupture!

Should say we now get on well and they use his name no probs.

PurpleStrawberry · 01/07/2011 09:22

I should have said in my first reply to this thread, that as well as those comments from friends, my MIL (who is the devil incarnate) isn't impressed with the fact the children have Hispanic names. She hasn't said anything bad about the names themselves, at least not to us (I'm sure she has behind our backs though), but she did say something like, "they're English, they should have English names."

Andie20521 · 01/07/2011 09:21

DD is called Saskia. Not that unusual, and pretty common in Holland (DH is Dutch)

My Mum had real difficulty saying it at first, (she'd not long had a stroke) and when introducing her to people would say "Sass as in Sasparilla and Ikea like the shop!"

Billiemumoftwo · 01/07/2011 09:18

my name is Billie and people say all the time what is your real name?? Old people tend to ask if it's short for billerina?! or "you're parents clearly wanted a boy"

JumpJockey · 01/07/2011 09:10

MIL to SIL, on hearing that her son was Gianluca, to be known as Luca: "Oh, such an Italian name with their surname. And why not just call him Luca if that's what he'll be known as?"

Well, first of all his father is Italian... And secondly, perhaps a fair comment apart from the breathtaking hypocrisy, given that SIL is (eg) Betty Jane, always called Jane, because Betty is a family name for MIL. Hmm

crazynanna · 01/07/2011 09:05

Years ago,at the local baby clinic,I was sitting facing a local girl who was a bit unfriendly,ok she was a caaaah,(we called her 'Tango Girl' on account of her orange fake tan),anyway back to the clinic, the HV came out and yelled "Lucky Harris"....to which Tango girl got off her chair and snorted "It's Lequann, actually!" Grin. You could hear the sniggers all over the surgery.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 01/07/2011 08:57

My MiL wanted to know why, of all the three names DD has, one isn't Mary.
She looked at me in all seriousness and told me that since DD was born abroad I could write Mary on the birth certificate and it would be legal.
