Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

That's strange about Marcus on the US site -- I have known plenty of white boys called Marcus in the States. I wouldn't assume that site is representative. (Of course, my experience may not be either.)

lisad123 · 26/06/2011 12:43

weirdly enough my (adopted) nana chose our second daughter, if you call one Tanisha, second clearly has to have an equally as nice name. Shes called Jasmine.

MmeLindor, seriously! i stumbled on to this american babycenter com/name board when pg with dc1, (I don't know if mn existed 9 years ago) and every single one of the posters told me that Marcus was for black boys. To me it sounds a beautiful roman classic.

MmeLindor. · 26/06/2011 12:18

Am laughing at Marcus being a name unsuitable for a white man. Tell that to the thousands of German men called Marcus. It is a popular name there.

I think if you use a 'foreign' name you are likely to get some comments about the name. Our dc have Scottish names and German mil said "I cannot pronounce that. I will call het katharina instead" when we told her DD's name.

Lisa
My cousin's daughter is called Tanisha and one of my uncles said it sounded like "tuna fish". Idiot.

When we told my mum what DS was almost called (took us 24hrs to decide once he'd arrived!) She said "ooooooooo no, there's a family around here (nowhere near me) who are called that (they aren't, it's got an extra letter on the beginning) who are really horrible, I'm so glad you didn't call him that!"

I then pointed out that she needed to think about what we may call our second child should we have one, as it could well be that particular name, so maybe she could think about it with a bit more common sense....

I'm now pg again and she regularly talks about what a sweet name this second choice is, and how she was silly to think about this horrid family, simper simper!

mousymouse · 26/06/2011 12:04

my dc have a 'black' name (ds) and a 'granny' name (dd).
but tbh, whatever name you chose, you will get at least the 'I knew one tom at school and he was an idiot' kind of comment.

mousymouse · 26/06/2011 12:01

lockets love your dc's names.

clam · 26/06/2011 11:54

Perhaps you could stop calling her by her name, on the grounds that "it reminds you of the most horrible, nastiest MIL you've ever had" and call her Vera instead.

clam · 26/06/2011 11:53

Shock WHAT? You named your son Francis, yet she calls him Valentine??? WTF??

fraktious · 26/06/2011 11:15

Mmmm I understand the 'I taught a difficult child' association but Valentine instead?! Or indeed any other name than the one you gave your DS even if she hates it. It's what you called him.

Idreamofsunshine · 26/06/2011 10:54

My next door neighbour asked what newborn DS2 was called. When I told her she pulled a face and said " I don't like that, its Welsh. " Confused

Ds 1 has a name that links to angels. He also has autiam, and when we were going through diagnosis, and he was having tremendous difficulties just living, a 'friend' commented that it was ironic that I'd named my son that name, as I thought he was going to be an angel, when in fact I'd got a devil.

Must add that I was at my most low point ever in my life, had 3 DS under 4 at the time, and had no idea why my darling boy was so unhappy.

She will never be forgiven.

curiouselle · 26/06/2011 10:42

when I suggested a name idea to my Grandma she said 'oh my god, don't be so ridiculous, how old fashioned are you!?!' Shock

Bandwitch · 26/06/2011 10:40

Laughing at all of these!

My uncle, when telling my mother what his grandchildren were called "now brace yourself.............".

Bandwitch · 26/06/2011 10:36

I was told on an american board that I couldn't use Marcus for a white boy. It was the first I'd ever heard of it!! It sounded awful with sur name and that was the reason I didn't use it. Still think it's a great name.

My 'friend' from school laughed at my dd's name. I was really hurt. She laughed for a minute and then pretended to try and stop laughing and said with this snippy voice dripping with sarcasm "it's very conservative" and tried to imply that I have no higher ambition than to be conservative.

She thinks I dropped her like a hot potato because I was too wrapped up in my baby I think.

clam · 26/06/2011 10:33

Bullet Blush Yep! Sorry. Hangover.

BulletWithAName · 26/06/2011 10:29

I think it's a fabulous name by the way! ShockGrin
I'd be really annoyed if my friend said that to me!

PurpleStrawberry · 26/06/2011 10:28

DS1 Natanael - "It looks like you are illiterate." This was said by a friend. Natanael is the Spanish form BTW.

DD1 Inés - "British people won't know how to pronounce it, she'll get called Inns." Said by same friend.

DD2 Beatriz - Another comment about the spelling, this time from another friend, and again this is the Spanish form.

DS2: Rafael - Another comment about the spelling, this time from the friend who commented on DS1 and DD1, and again it's simply the Spanish spelling.

BulletWithAName · 26/06/2011 10:27

Clam...is Adolph pronounced the same as erm...Adolf?

clam · 26/06/2011 10:26

Well, for anonymity's sake, let's pretend I called DS Adolph Benito.
Friend said "Oh yes? I like Benito. (Sub-text: Adolph is shit)

lionheart · 26/06/2011 10:21

If Edward is strange to her what does she consider a good choice, Catsu?

Catsu · 26/06/2011 10:14

My sister said of ds2s name 'well I wasn't expecting you to call him THAT' with a cats bum face
(ds2 is Edward. Sisters children are of the jack, josh, Sam type names. Edward is very strange to her!)

mumblebum · 26/06/2011 10:09

My MIL thought DS's name was unusual (it was a top 10 name at the time) until one of her friends had a baby boy a few weeks later who was given the exact same first and middle names LOL.

BulletWithAName · 26/06/2011 10:02

Shiney- I think Teddy is sooooo cute! Love it!
