When we told my fil (arse) what we had called dd1 he told me " you can't call her that it's a black girls name" Shock
and another " and how am I meant to spell that!!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
LittleWhiteWolf · 26/06/2011 17:56

TyDon't..., Sophia Lauren is a pretty famous name combination given the actress Sophia Lauren. It'd be like naming a child Audrey Hepburn Sirname or Marilyn Monroe Sirname in terms of recognisability. Still, he shouldn't have tried to mock your choice.

(hopes hasn't ruined the good intentions of this thread!)

My FIL, on hearing DDs name, said "What, as in Jones?" Her name is Bridget. Not as bad as many on here, but still got on my nerves.

Psammead · 26/06/2011 17:55

I like Felicity too.

Everyone like DD's first name, but I tell them her middle name, and I get the blank stare, 'what?' treatment. It's Rowan. Or 'oh, do you like Mr. Bean?'

LetThereBeRock · 26/06/2011 17:41

Did we ever find out what a child abusing nun would be called?Grin

LetThereBeRock · 26/06/2011 17:38

What's wrong with Felicity? It's lovely.

lovinme · 26/06/2011 17:12

DD1 is called Mya my bestfriend said it's a disgusting name but it's much nicer than what she called her DD so I just laughed,it still pissed me off though!

TyDontWannaMissAthing · 26/06/2011 16:59

My sister said regarding ds' name, in a loud voice, laughing, 'haha he will get called Archibald, oh you are serious'? Ds is Archie Ryan.
FIL and fil's friend about dd's name, 'ooh Sophia Lauren' or whoever she is, it annoyed me that much i got rid of the middle name, the stupid twat doesnt even realise it is his fault Angry DD is now called Sophie Diane, it was going to be Sophie Lauren Diane.

meltedchocolate · 26/06/2011 16:56

Haha, yes me too. I have scrubbed Felicity off the girl's name list for any future child I have :o but at the time I was crazy it seemed lovely.

:( That is sad Wolf.

I am surprised so many people say rude things to expectant parents but I suppose they think they can get away with it then. To say to someone who already has named the child though Hmm

Tumbleweed seems like a brilliant name for DC2 Wolf??

suzikettles · 26/06/2011 16:55

"That's a dog's name" - my gran when my mum told her my name.

She denies it now, but my mum will never forget it (was very upset at the time apparently).

Will not say what my name it, but it's not particularly doggy I don't think (not Rex or Snuffy for eg)

WolfShapedBullet · 26/06/2011 16:45

My Mum literally stopped in her tracks as she moved across my hospital room for the first look at her granddaughter and I revealed dd's name with a "you're joking".

Tumbleweed blew across the room as I answered "no" and tried not to cry in my hormonal and exhausted state. She then pulled a proper judgy catsbum face and "oh" I've never quite forgiven her for bursting my lovely new baby bubble like that.

I wouldn't mind but the name has been mentioned on this thread and I'd consider it fairly normal. She then made a point of referring to dd as 'the baby' for a long time after as she was so loathe to use the name.

It makes me want to name dc2 something really 'out there' just to annoy her. Grin

I am glad you had a son Chocolate

I shall not say which but some of the names on here are bloomin awful :o Some are lovely indeed though.

Everyone seems to like DS's name but when I told some people of the girl's name I had chosen if he were a girl they said 'Felicity?!?! but that sounds so posh and snobby. You are too common to have a daughter called Felicity.' :o

BulletWithAName · 26/06/2011 15:11

Oh forgot to mention my DC's names

Brandon (the chav) and Scarlett (the stripper).

Cheers MN Grin

ByTheBeardOfZeus · 26/06/2011 15:10

MIL on announcing DS1's name would be Lucian - "Oh, I didn't know my grandson was going to be a Bond villian." Hmm

Aaand on hearing DD's MN would be Amaryllis - "Sigh...well, at least I can always claim you were a crack addict."

MarioandLuigi · 26/06/2011 14:58

When I told people I was calling DS2 Fraser, about 30 people said 'But thats a scottish name'

I wasnted to call DS1 Jessie (I didnt but went with something similar). MIL told me he would 'Turn out gay with a name like that'.

Debs75 · 26/06/2011 14:54

When I told best friend my dd3 was called Lucy she said 'oh my mum's dog was called Lucy. I hated that dog'

ningthemerciless · 26/06/2011 14:45

Collision - my son is also a Max (a name I loved). No problems with that but people seem to have a problem with his middle name - which is my surname. I get a lot 'Is this 'cos you aren't married' - No! Even if we were married, and I took his name (neither of which will happen with us) I would STILL give him my name as a middle name, it's a lovely name, it's my heritage and it works well. I tell people it's an old Scots custom (which it is) but people look at me like 'Yes dear, you just made that up didn't you'

Wow, that ended up being a bit more ranty than I thought it would!

Lonnie · 26/06/2011 14:28

really incredible hwo rude people are I practice going

OHH lovely when I have friends due even if I think oh no but they think it is so why not accept it?..................................................................................

Inspirachion · 26/06/2011 14:04

Ds1 is Rory
From a woman in the street "let's hope he dosent roar like a lion"

Charming.

MrsKravitz · 26/06/2011 13:52

My MIl just gasped and started crying

Nobody frikkin told me it was the same as her brother who had killed himself many many years ago .

SpringFollows · 26/06/2011 13:42

On the other side.... we named DS after two family members- so fairly 'ordinary' names. When we told some friends they laughed incredulously and said they would NEVER have expected us to go for something 'normal' they assumed we would name the 'poor kid' something ridiculous that everyone would 'laugh at behind (our) backs'.

That really surpirsed me actually.

Not sure the friendship ever recovered really.

RustyBear · 26/06/2011 13:42

Someone working at the hospital when DD was born - not sure what her actual function was, as I never saw her actually do anything except hang around talking - asked me DD's name. DD is called Amber, which at that time was not a very common name

Me: She's called Amber
Her:Emma? oh, that's lovely
Me: No, Amber
Her: Oh. Oh well, I suppose one name's as good as another....

Baffledandbewildered · 26/06/2011 13:37

My pil decided my dd didn't have a proper name / didnt like her name so they used her middle name ....until at about 3 she turned aeound and said nanny grandad I won't talk to you or answer you unless you call me by my name . That stopped them!! Lol they have also never called our youngest by his name again they don't like it, he doesn't seem to care and just ignores them ( hehe naughty boy )

MmeLindor. · 26/06/2011 13:31

I would have Marcus down as a WASP name - Marcus Albright Wilthorp III

thursday · 26/06/2011 13:11

the registrar said 'oh, doesn't she get a real name?' when we were registering her. we'd just registered her as Evelyn, which i believe to be real Hmm but my then 2yr old called her Evie. had i registered her as Evie i would have expected a sneer.
