Ds is called Arthur - woman in House of Fraser reacted with a look of incredulity, then said 'Is he named after his grandpa??'.

Ziggimajiggi · 07/07/2011 13:23

Ahem - favourite.

Ziggimajiggi · 07/07/2011 13:23

Not actually had the LO yet, but my MIL asked what we were going to call her granchild - I know, not a good start -

She literally bellowed NOOOOOOO at my favoutirte girls name, Aurora :(

cumbria81 · 06/07/2011 14:22

Actually, I have to say I agree with some of these reactions (even if they are rude)

lisad123 · 06/07/2011 09:17

Math Grin that is a brilliant response.

A cousin and his wife announced the (unusual) name of their first child to my uncle, who said, 'But X is not a family name' -- cousin replied, 'well it is now'.

My MIL read through our baby name book in which I had dotted names I/we liked. Then she piped up "you can't call a baby Leonard!". Every opportunity after that she mentioned it. My SIL asked for our short list of names (we knew it was a boy) and she laughed out loud at Otto...made no attempt to conceal how funny she found it. If MIL had hung around long enough she would have found out that DH did not like Leonard at all. If I had my way I would have had Wilfred, Leonard, Gabriel etc. However, we settled on Solomon (which I love) and Sol suits him to a tee! No negative comments...only a few toilet humour jokes from my brother a-Sol!

DM, every time she hears DD2's name says the same thing she said the first time I told her "What kind of name is that?"
(dementia is a gift that keeps on giving)
Her name is Lea.

But then I should have known because on hearing I was getting married DM said "why are you doing that?"

pinkgirlythoughts · 03/07/2011 08:53

When I told my sister we were thinking of calling DS Frederick if he was a boy, she said "I hope you have a girl!" She now agrees that it's absolutely the most perfect name for him!

Only slightly negative comment I've received since he's been born was from my grandma. On meeting him in the hospital and being told his name was Frederick Benjamin, she looked at him for a few seconds, then said "...why don't you call him Benjamin?"

JessKM · 02/07/2011 23:30

My DD is Jolie...we get many people asking twice. Older people go, hello Julie, younger people go hello jodie.....and we go face palm

Eglu · 02/07/2011 19:56

Forgot to say that Gran1 also said of DS1's name, whilst slagging off someone up her street who had just named their DS Seamus, "I mean Sam I can get used to, but Seamus!"

Seriously, Sam she can get used to!! I don't think she would like any name tbh. I remember her slagging my cousins names as they were born years back too.

Eglu · 02/07/2011 19:54

Both of my Grans were not impressed with DS2's name. Gran1 said of it "I'll never get used to that name' Gran2 said "Where did you get that from?"

He is called Cooper which is quite unusual, but loved by all of our Scottish friends and family, as it sounds Scottish.

chillistars · 02/07/2011 18:01

We have a lot of children called Charlie at work, it's a very unisex name these days.

chillistars · 02/07/2011 18:01

I try hard not to comment if I don't like the names for a proposed child, but when I was told a friend was calling her (unborn) twins Marmaduke and Aubrey I think I might have struggled to maintain a positive facial expression. Ooops.

swingingcat · 02/07/2011 17:45

I was speaking to my neighbour about this thread.

Her son is called Wesley and everyone calls him Wes. She says when she introduced him to the family her own mother said God awful name for the poor child and others have said why he isn't black!!

clarabella18 · 02/07/2011 16:44

when pregnanat with DS2 i told my nan that he would be called Charlie.
her reaction was "oh. What about craig, thats a nice name" Hmm she then phoned up a few weeks later to tell us she had just seen the most perfect name, apparantly there was a reprter on the news with the same last name as us and hos name was Quentin. No offence to anyone with the name quentin but we live in the west of Scotland and you can guarantee my child would be bullied to hell if i sent him to school with the name quentin.

When DS2 was born and we phoned her to let her know and that his name was Charlie she said "oh you've stuck with the name then?"

alot of other people tell us it's quigte unusual or different Hmm

voddiekeepsmesane · 02/07/2011 12:56

When telling my father (in New Zealand) the name we had chosen for ds he came up with a corker "Samuel Edward, well that very English sounding" Hmm that would be because he is English!

issynoko · 02/07/2011 12:45

My auntie said "Oh NO! NOOO! It means she'll be very dozy". Runs in the family methinks.

mathanxiety · 02/07/2011 05:17

I remember telling my office mates my choice of names for DD1 or DS1 (before DD1 was born) and the little silence that followed spoke volumes. Finally someone piped up, 'When I have a baby I hope it's a girl and I'll call her Brittany. I love that name.' (My chosen names were nothing like Brittany).

It was only the predictable response of my mother to a name very high on my list for DD3 that kept me from using it, and I wish I had had the courage of my convictions even still.
