Is 'Fanny' a suitable name for my fifth?

Hi all,

I'm 25 weeks in with my 5th at this moment in time and already starting to think of names!!! My current kids are Claire, Helen, Julie and Jago - was thinking maybe 'Fanny' if I get a girl as a name for my fifth because Fanny Craddock is an inspiration to me and I want to keep a piece of her legend in some way living on. What do you guys think? xx

Yes, I know it is a wind up - that is obvious. And I also think the culturallysophisticated and Delphiii are one and the same person, trying to be funny.

But the name Fanny, while I don't like it, is used by a lot of people, especially outside of the UK. And it may not be so funny for them.

freerangeeggs · 25/06/2011 15:04

I think it's a beautiful name and you should use it. I prefer Mingella myself though.

BellaBearisWideAwake · 25/06/2011 12:37

My mum knew a lady called fanny when she was little who married a man called Mr Penis. Totally not making that up. Wasn't in the UK though.

oneofsuesylvesterscheerios · 25/06/2011 12:36

It's been a funny (fanny?) thread but it's quite obviously a wind up. I know this because of the combination of names for the op's "other dc".

Just not a very imaginative list; very similar to those names a bloke with no idea would use.

rachel234 · 25/06/2011 12:32

Just googled the name and it seems surprisingly popular (in the US at least):

Fanny is a very popular first name for women (#974 out of 4276) and a slightly less popular surname or last name for all people (#51934 out of 88799). (1990 U.S. Census)

Larold · 25/06/2011 12:06

oh no! my mums nn for me when I was little was Fanny or Fanny Annie and some occasions Gladys. Don't know why she used these names when I had a perfectly good name thatf she gave me.

Never liked being called Fanny all the time - am probably scarred for life. Especially as XH nn was Dick!

Divorce was inevitable x

UndiscoveredApprentice · 24/06/2011 19:32

well I misread your title as ''is fanny a suitable name for my filth?'' and thought YES! but for a child, no.

fannybanjo · 24/06/2011 18:19

It's a fan-fucking-tastic name but I'm biased... Would it be short for Cunt or Twat? Wink

GrimmaTheNome · 24/06/2011 18:16

That was spunky of you (another think an American may innocently say...)

Bandwitch · 24/06/2011 16:45

i also had to type 1,000 litres of liquid gum as the contents of a container shipment and I typed cum instead. I just held me 'ead up high and did not leave though. (morto tho i was)

Bandwitch · 24/06/2011 16:44

I sent a letter to vagina in the US once. spellchecker did that!! well, it suggested vagina and i must have clicked on yes.

LimburgseVlaai · 24/06/2011 14:18

A colleague called Virginia once had a junk mail letter addressed to her as 'Vagina'. After that, she was called Fanny at work. She left that company not long after.

carney · 24/06/2011 14:07

No !!!

bumbums · 24/06/2011 14:05

Bandwitch · 24/06/2011 14:01

Speaking as someone who's midle name is Frances and got called "Fanny" by her Mum in public. NOOOOOOOOO don't do it to her!!!!!

GrimmaTheNome · 23/06/2011 12:47

I knew an American who had to be tactfully told why greeting new UK colleagues with an enthusuastic 'Hi, I'm Randy' wasn't always such a good idea.

MackerelOfFact · 23/06/2011 12:30

Willy, Dick and Roger are all lovely if you're looking for boys' names too. Or Randy, that's cute.

pilates · 23/06/2011 12:19

This thread isn't for real, its a wind up.

IvyAndGold · 23/06/2011 12:12

Was it the 80s? Were they neon green or orange?

GrimmaTheNome · 23/06/2011 10:54

In the USA, Fanny means bum - I lived there when 'bumbags' were in vogue and was slightly suprised the first time I heard one referred to as a 'fanny pack'.

Domesticbodess · 23/06/2011 10:52

Would be perfectly acceptable in France, but guess that's not much use to you!
