If we like Gwennan and Siobhan, what else will we like?

oohlaalaa · 13/06/2011 12:50

DH has finally come up with two names that he likes.

Gwennan is out of the question, as good friends have used Gwendolen. It is too similar.

Siobhan is out of the question, as we are Welsh and English. I just do not feel a very Irish name, such as Siobhan, would feel "us".

We do not mind a Welsh or English girls name. I'm English, DH is Welsh (with an English surname).

Eiri or Eirwen? (Welsh for snow/snow white)
Angharad is lovely...

oohlaalaa · 16/06/2011 13:55

No, DH loves Arwen, but I do not. We find plenty of names one of us loves, but not a name we both love.

Arwen?

Or is that too Lord of the Rings

oohlaalaa · 14/06/2011 10:18

All good names. Tara too posh. Erin is just too harsh sounding to me. Esther is nice, but the s sound does not flow with our surname.

Thank you.

Tara
Erin
Esther

I recall DH suggested Ceri, when I came up with Kerry ages ago, saying it should have the welsh spelling rather than chavvy spelling. I couldnt remember welsh spelling when I suggested it earlier.

I think DH changed his mind about the name, saying that it didnt sound a grown-up name to him. Hmm

Thanks for Lowri, pretty name, but doesnt flow with our surname.

ShoutyHamster · 13/06/2011 16:28

If you like Kerry what about Ceri? Same pronunciation.

Lowri also fits with your syllable rule but looks longer and prettier than some of the very short names you have, might look nicer than two four-letter names put together?

Pronounced low-ree rather than lau-ree.

Lowri Faye is lovely :)

oohlaalaa · 13/06/2011 16:24

I stand corrected. Thank you.

Nope Cari is definitely Welsh (it means loved/beloved)

Prefer your DH's list tbh, but good luck finding one you both like

oohlaalaa · 13/06/2011 16:04

Love the name Isla. DH not so keen. Also like Erin, but this has been ruled out.

I like Mari, and love the name Marianne. DH hates Marianne.

I think Cari is turkish, and looks incomplete to me. I prefer Carrie spelling.

DH likes Clara, but I dont like the name. It is a nice name, just inexplicably dont like it.

Names can be so difficult.

The list is now:

Faye
Lara
Cara
Carrie
Sara

DH has agreed to Faye being a middle name.

Mari
Cari

Clara

magpie2 · 13/06/2011 15:52

Isla?

ShoutyHamster · 13/06/2011 15:49

Manon Lara

oohlaalaa · 13/06/2011 15:44

I didnt know Sian was welsh Jane. I like the name Sian. I just know so many. In my mind it doesnt flow with our surname either.

Spoken to DH, and he doesnt like Elin. Caron he quite likes, I'm not so sure about it. He quite likes Zara, but spelt with an S - Sara. DH has also said he prefers Cara to Lara.

Glad I'm not the only one with R issues.

OP posts:
belgo · 13/06/2011 15:39

ohhlaalaa - I have the same problem with 'R'. Lucky you to have a name without an "r' in it!

That was my main criteria for choosing a baby name, something without an R.

PatriciatheStripper · 13/06/2011 15:36

I'm surprised you are ruling out Sian, because isn't it the Welsh version of Jane?

oohlaalaa · 13/06/2011 15:13

Flippineck, sorry not loving any of them.

I'm not that keen on names starting with R. I used to have problems pronoucing R when I was younger, and dont want to inflict an R name on my child, just in case she is like me. I still struggle to pronouce Rhyl.

OP posts:
oohlaalaa · 13/06/2011 15:10

Siwan is very pretty. I think we'd be spelling it all the time, and telling people how to pronouce it.

We like the name Suranne, but it just doesnt flow with our surname.

Sioned is also nice, but would be having too spell it, all the time.

DH finds more than two syllables poncey!!! I dont agree with him here. We do both prefer short names. I love the name Esme, but it just doesnt flow with our surname.

On the list so far, for DH to consider, is:

Faye (he hates this - considers the name weak sounding)
Lara (he thinks its okay)
Carrie (hes not convinced - doesnt consider it a proper name)
Elin (not yet discussed)
Caron (not yet discussed)
Zara (not yet discussed)

DH loves Seren, and has also suggested Gwennan and Siobhan. All of which I have ruled out.

OP posts:
flippineck · 13/06/2011 15:02

Manon
Rhian
Betsan

oohlaalaa · 13/06/2011 14:59

SloganLogan From your list, I like the following:

Cara - its lovely, but I prefer Lara

Stella - love. Just not with our surname

Aislinn - I dont like this spelling, but I love the Aisling spelling (pronounced Ashlyn). It is irish though, and quite unusual, and would be mispronouced lots.

Kirstin - I like this, prefer it spelt Kirsten. Also love the names Kristin and Kirsty. Just dont think these names go very well with our surname.

Mary - love. It is my mothers name though.

Georgia - like, but not with our surname.

Zara - LOVE this name. I suspect DH will think of Zara Philips. He suffers from reverse snobbery.

Hannah - love, but my cousins name

Alice - love, but associate it with a bully from school. I also like the name Alys, but not with our surname.

Jane - LOVE. It is my name!

Thanks you. Zara is going on the list.

PatriciatheStripper - I like Caron, its going on the list too.

xx

Gwenno's a lovely name Belgo (DD1 is one!)

How about

Siwan (pr. Shoo-an/Shiw-an) - similar to Siobhan but Welsh
or
Sioned (pr. Shon-ed)

By the way, I'm intrigued about your DH's insistence on having no more than two syllables!

PatriciatheStripper · 13/06/2011 14:51

Karen (or the less common variation Caron).

Combines some of the elements you both like, and is not over-used atm.

oohlaalaa · 13/06/2011 14:42

Yes, but the nicknames for both would be Gwen.

Gwenno.

I don't consider that to be particularly similar to Gwendolen, it's a very different sounding name.
