Somebody was very rude about my baby's name yesterday.

He is seven months now. When I told her his name she said "oh. you don't mind him being bullied when he's older then" .

His name is Alessandro.

Lovely name!

DD has what I thought was an uncontentious though not hugely common "English" name & I've still had reactions which cheese me off.

You chose it because you love it, I presume, just take pride in his gorgeous name which felt just right to you & try not to give two hoots what some rude cunt you've just met thinks!

Er, well, I must disagree with that. What matters most is whether the child likes it.

Obviously one cannot know that at the time of naming, but still.

Funnys I went to school with a Fabian. He didn't get bullied. He was the bully but I don't think it was anything to do with his name!

mister wouldn't let me call our daughter Delilah, for which i'm still bitter. there's also a queen song Delilah about a cat.

re OP: yes that was rude and unnecessary. a simple 'how unusual!' gets your point across without actually spelling it out. i get a lot of 'how unusual!'s about my son. the registrar made a snarky comment about my daughter when we registered her.

A friend's mother enquired after another mutal friend, who had just had a baby. She asked the name, I told her (Lily). "Oh, ", says mother, "What a shame. It's flower names, you see, they always sound awful." She knows FULL WELL that DTD1's name is Daisy. Stupid old trout.

aye Teddy re nice and interesting people. I deffo judge folk on their reaction to my DC's names. If anyone says "oh", I think 'fool' and if anyone says how lovely etc, I put them on my Christmas Card list

Very rarely do I get a positive reaction to ds's name, people usually just say:
What?
What?
Hows that spelt?
Oh.

Can't get angry with idiots anymore, I consider it a twat filter as all the nice interesting people either say that's nice, or is it Irish? And I kiss them

OP - my children all have Hispanic names and we get that too.

These people don't realise there is life beyond English names!

I remember telling a colleague my new daughter's name and she pulled a face and said: 'why did you call her that?' I just replied 'because I like it' (well, obv) and walked away - but I was seething.

Don't worry at all, his name is lovely. My DC names are Fabian and Raphael (Rafe for short) and we get loads of 'Oh' reactions. Nothing outright rude, just that you cane see a lot of folk think WTF!
I don't care, and neither should you. I love my DC's names and that is really all that matters. Fabian has been at school now for a year and as far as I know, no one has commented on his name, far less bullied him.

My dp's uncle was very rude about my DS's name and I was quite speechless at the time (which is almost unheard of for me )

I did get quite upset about it afterwards - right up to the point when I remembered he had called his son Wayne and so actually I didn't give two sh*ts for his opinion on names!

With apologies to any Waynes, my point is as long as YOU like it, who cares what the rude tossers think

When an old lady asked what my DS2was called, I told her. She shook her head and said, "Well, never mind." Cheeky cow.
It's a traditional Welsh name, by the way... And we are in deepest Wales!

Some people have no manners. Alessandro is a lovely name and even if it is not to her taste, she shouldn't make such a comment.
