Bruno

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
wildstrawberryplace · 08/06/2011 12:30

I agree, and we know plenty of little Augustes and Kamals and Astrids and the like. It's not even that I think "foreign" names are precious per se, or that you can't use a non UK name without being pretentious. It's probably entirely not rational - but Henri, Luca, Cosima = precious (to me!) if you're not French, Italian whatever while Amelie, Ines and others do not.

No offence intended.

TheCrackFox · 08/06/2011 12:22

I must be getting old as my first thought was Bruno Brookes - 1980's mulletted DJ.

mumoftoomany · 08/06/2011 12:16

I'm sorry wildstrawberry. Being continental European myself perhaps I took the comment too personally. But I do think we should be encouraging more name diversity rather than putting people off by labelling anything outside of the top100 as 'pretentious' (whatever that may mean). Wouldn't it be nice to have a class of kids with lots of nice different names (including a little Bruno) than a class full of Jacks, Charlies and Alfies or similar.

wildstrawberryplace · 08/06/2011 12:10

mumoftoomany, it's just a personal reaction - the OP asked for honest first reactions, so I gave mine. I'm not saying it will be everyones. People can call their kids what they like. No need to get snippy!

hmmSleep · 08/06/2011 11:47

Like Oohlaalaa I think of Bruno Mars, who's getting quite popular so I think the name will get used more. I must admit like others have said it is a bit of a big dog's name, or reminds me of Frank Bruno, but I think it's a grower.

mumoftoomany · 08/06/2011 11:43

Why would being continental European make any difference as to what you name your child Hmm.

I don't get this worry about a name being 'pretentious' - just because it isn't a top 10/50 name? Shouldn't we encourage more name diversity?

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 08/06/2011 11:43

I rather like it. Is Nigella's ds called Bruno?

What are your other likes, OP?

MynameisTerces · 08/06/2011 11:40

I imagine a Bruno to be very large a bit violent and badly behaved. OOh same as Foxy.

wildstrawberryplace · 08/06/2011 11:36

First and honest impression? If you're not continental European or have some kind of link with the name, I think it's little bit precious/pretentious. And I say this as someone who considered the name for her DS (I like the meaning) but dismissed it for the above reason.

mumoftoomany · 08/06/2011 11:34

I love it. Stong and classic. And not as overused as many others.

Renaissance227 · 08/06/2011 11:34

No!!

FoxyRevenger · 08/06/2011 11:32

hmm not a fan. It's quite an ugly sounding word, and makes me think of brutish... Hmm

MynameisTerces · 08/06/2011 11:32

I don't like it at all.

thumbwitch · 08/06/2011 11:32

Showing my age - Bruno was the pube-headed pianist in Fame - but he was quite cute. I like it, but only if your DS is actually brown-haired as I'm pretty sure it means "the brown one".

going · 08/06/2011 11:31

Cute

jbcbj · 08/06/2011 11:31

sorry, no - didn't like it even before sacha baron cohen "borrowed" it. makes me think of a boxer alternated with an effeminate european now....Blush

buuuuut, i always reckon that if you like it, sod anyone else! i am sure one of our possible names raised a few eyebrows!

DizzyKipper · 08/06/2011 11:31

No.

poppydaisy · 08/06/2011 11:30

I like it.

Personally I wouldn't even ask on here because by definition (as it is an underused name) a lot of people won't like it. But once they meet a lovely little realy Bruno they will change their minds and associate with your lovely ds.

And I'd much rather meet a little Bruno than another Jack, Harry of Charlie (yawn).

messylittlemonkey · 08/06/2011 11:29

Love it!

oohlaalaa · 08/06/2011 11:29

Not keen. I used to think of Frank Bruno, but now I think of Bruno Mars. Not seen the Sacha Baron Cohen film.

midnightexpress · 08/06/2011 11:28

I really like it, but it does make me think of the Sacha Baron Cohen film, which would put me off using it atm.

BelleEnd · 08/06/2011 11:28

First though- Fat kid in The Witches by Roald Dahl. He was perfectly likeable. I like :)

SloganLogan · 08/06/2011 11:26

It's OK.

sparkle12mar08 · 08/06/2011 11:25

Okay, not oaky! But that said, it is a fairly solid, hearty name. Possibly wooden, but would depend on the personality of the child.

sparkle12mar08 · 08/06/2011 11:23

It's oaky, nothing special, not nasty.
