I need some names with a similar 'feel' to...

As the title suggests I am 20 weeks pregnant with a baby of unknown sex. I prefer more unusual names, DH could probably be persuaded if he liked the name enough!

No old lady/ old man names please and not too whacky, just would rather not go down the Emily/ James route.

Boys:

Jonah
Samuel
Saul
Thomas - yes I know is very popular but we don't know any and we like Tom as well as Thomas.
Harry - as Thomas!

(DH not keen on biblical names but I love them! I wanted Jacob for DD and he didn't like it but now he sees it as more mainstream and for this reason I have gone off it! Don't want names like Quentin or Hugo although not because I don't like them, just don't think of them as names for my baby iyswim)

Girls:

Lily
Freya
Phoebe
Romilly
Vita

(Like all these names but none of them is quite 'it'. DH doesn't like Freya but I love the Scandinavian feel. We both like nature names. Would not want anything too commonly used as I have lots of friends with babies and the chances are someone has chosen it already.)

Thank you

I think your names are great - Romilly is fab! What about:

Greta
Hazel
Isla

I love Ingrid, really wanted it, but had a boy! Boys are trickier, I had big trouble...in the end called him Rafe and love it. Harry and Thomas are lovely, but hows about:

Joseph
Milo
Jude
Lachlan

I love Vita by the way - never heard it before - sounds very strong and beautiful.

Love Dido and Calliope. Not sure DH will do though. He rejected Delphine because it 'sounds French'. He seems to think of it as a word association game in whjch he has to respond with his initial reaction which in some ways is good, but 'sounds French' and 'sounds Greek' are just reactions and not a real problem as far as I am concerned.

He totally rejected Vita so I guess that is out.

It is hard to get him to say exactly what his objections are sometimes. Never mind, he seems to be more prepared this time round to be a bit more open minded.

How about Calliope nn Calli? Greek for beautiful voiced & a muse of poetry. Or Calla as in Lily, have heard this bandied around naming boards.

I quite like Delphi, dislike Delphine as it makes me think of a French girl who described it as 'like the Dolphin'.

Cassia is nice, makes me think of Casio (showing my age) prefer Cassie.

SilkStalkings · 22/05/2011 14:26

Prefer Delphine to just Delphi. How about Dido as in Dido & Aneas? Or Alethia (pron Aleethia) which is Greek for truth?

20wkbaby · 22/05/2011 06:46

Lots of lovely suggestions - love Genevieve. THe good news is we had a discussion about names yesterday (DH bit reluctant) and he seems to have changed his mind about some he wasn't keen on, he even rejected some because they weren't very 'exotic'.

What does everyone think of Delphi?

Or Cassia?

Both the short list (nothing goes on the short list unless both of us would consider it).

spidookly · 20/05/2011 21:38

I love Leda.

UrsulaBuffay · 20/05/2011 21:35

Wow Leda is an amazing name & amazing story!

MightyAphrodite · 20/05/2011 21:30

My DD3 is Leda, as in 'Leda and the swan' (if that means anything to anybody). Another lovely greek name is Nefeli (for a girl). My vote for a boy's name goea to Harry (DS1!)

UrsulaBuffay · 20/05/2011 21:24

I have a Phoebe too and like:

Genevieve (could nn Viva?)

Cordelia

Mabel

Martha

Tabitha

Rafferty

Arthur

Jago

Alexander

Lonnie · 20/05/2011 21:10

Otis
Dexter

Cora
Nia

Bumpsadaisie · 20/05/2011 17:36

Well my DD is a Phoebe and if DC2 is a boy he'll be Thomas!

So I pick those two!

20wkbaby · 20/05/2011 17:33

SilkStalkings - I know! He just has other associations for Thomas and now Jacob, like I said more mainstream.

Not sure quite what is wrong with something being biblical anyway.

I do love Sophia but in the end the S thing would put me off it.

lljkk · 20/05/2011 16:10

Ester, Rebecca, Naomi, Elsbeth, Lorna, Laura, Mary
Othniel, Andrew, Edgar, Elliot, Oliver, Vincent

SilkStalkings · 20/05/2011 15:48

Thomas is biblical!
Adam?

Love Hebe and Vita (on its own or short for Victoria?). How about Mina?

spidookly · 20/05/2011 14:16

Milo

Sarah
Sakura (not sure if S names a total no no since you include Sophia)

20wkbaby · 20/05/2011 12:37

Thanks for the responses.

Should have said some of those names are out - the S ones for example as we have an S surname.

The Thomas/ Harry thing is DH's preference and where our tastes coincide. I would prefer biblical or other less used names.

I don't necessarily want unusual in the sense of generally speaking, just not to clash with other friends/ family names and as we both have large families we are limited. Of the responses a lot are out for this reason even though I love them.

Like:

Hebe
Sophia
Romola

Noah - bit biblical for DH
Josiah
Otto
Jude

The others I am either not keen on or already know one. The problem for me is always it may be a lovely name but can I imagine having a child with the name.

I don't think any of your choices are unusual, sorry. Lovely though, but I know quite a few babies/children with those names. Apart from Romilly and Vita, which are beautiful, by the way.
