whizzyrocket judging by the number of kids around my area named after Greek/Roman Gods, it won't take long before people start going for the 'Greek tragedy' names just to be different.

I really love the name Lavinia, then a friend reminded me of Titus Andronicus. Stupid Shakespeare messing up names for people!!

PumpkinBones · 02/06/2011 00:05

I have a Stanley, and in 19 months, have met three others. DS1 has a name which is in the top 20, and yet I haven't met another child with his name?! I think Stanley is part of the "second wave" of old fashioned names now that Alfie, Jack, Charlie, Freddie, Frank, etc have been popular.

whizzyrocket · 01/06/2011 23:01

But Jocasta, really?

When Oedipus killed his father and married his mother, wasn't Jocasta the mother he married? Merope was the woman he thought was his mother... much nicer name too.

whizzyrocket · 01/06/2011 22:53

I know of a few Matildas.

I can't bear that Reuben is a name some of you are calling trendy. I'll have to go for Seth instead! (Hopes desperately that someone somewhere gets the joke and has read Cold Comfort!)

CandyS · 01/06/2011 22:42

Jocasta.

smother · 01/06/2011 22:40

Ooh you should rendezvous by the nice ham!

singersgirl · 23/05/2011 14:57

Yes, Waitrose...That is a bit weird, particularly as I almost started a thread on it!

hellojude · 23/05/2011 09:50

singersgirl god really that's a bit weird...Waitrose by any chance??

I think Jean is a good name.

Merlion · 23/05/2011 06:52

Well D.J. Dapperflapper certainly makes for a good stage name Grin.

I can't really take Jean seriously as it's my MIL's name so NEVER EVER for me I'm afraid. Although of all the grandparent's names it is probably the least offensive!

I know of 5 Islas born in the last year.

dapperflapper · 23/05/2011 06:40

baby will be here within a week, and when it appears he/she will be Daphne or Hector. Hector is a lot more 'trendy', I know, but I still love it. We know no other baby Daphnes and when I have mentioned this name to others, it's always been greeted with surprise - 'I hadn't thought of that!' and then 'that's a real grower - I love it!' which is the reaction we like. I predict Jean to become the new middle name du jour - to replace those faded Roses and Maes

What do you reckon to Daphne Jean?

singersgirl · 22/05/2011 23:00

I have just looked through this thread and, HelloJude, we were in the same supermarket at the same time last week! The mum called really loudly to Huckleberry very frequently and mentioned Cosmo half a dozen times as well. I actually mentioned it to DH that evening because I kept thinking it would make a good Mumsnet Baby Names topic! We must be neighbours.

KateMiddletonsEyebrows · 22/05/2011 22:49

I know a baby Lara and a baby Lana

I've heard of a few 'Lyras'

hellojude · 22/05/2011 20:49

Lauralastic your welcome Wink I agree with BettyButterknife Kitty is going to go through the roof..which is a shame as I quite like it!

Just out of interest has anyone come across a Lara? For some reason I thought it might be a popular alternative to all the Lola's and Ava's etc.

UrsulaBuffay · 22/05/2011 20:47

Lol I thought you meant a name 'bumbags' Grin

MamaLazarou · 22/05/2011 19:02

Just because everyone else is doing it doesn't mean it's ok. Remember bumbags?

legallyblond · 22/05/2011 16:23

I see what people mean about not wanting names of which there are many in a class... but the most popular names aren't always the ones that end up being multiples at a school.... it can be random! DH teaches year 3. In his class there are:

2 x Mavis
3 x Cameron
2 x Chante and
2 x Leah

Also 2 x Grace and 2 x Rebecca, which are, admittedly, popular names.

How random is that!?! He did say that names in this class are uncannily the same given they are so "out there".

Lauralastic · 22/05/2011 13:50

Thank you sonnie.
My post was very tongue in cheek, it was the response I recieved when I said I wanted a name for my child that wasn't the same as anyone else in the class.
This is a very useful thread to see what peoples views on the next name trend. Thanks OP.

sonniebonnie · 22/05/2011 10:50

"You know it is OK if there are 4 children in the same class with the same name"

Yes of course it is 'ok' but imo the whole point of naming something or someone is to IDENTIFY them. If their first names are identical, then they'll need to add another identifyer such as initial of adjective. It is also a pain for the teachers Smile.

mathanxiety · 21/05/2011 23:09

I think it might be little cartoonish.
