Edward is a family name, but to ring the changes we are thinking of Theodore, which leaves us the option of Theo or Teddy, which I love. Any thoughts???

Teddy is fine as a nickname for either Edward or Theodore. Can also change to Ted, Ed or Theo when older. As Rita says the name came before the bear Smile

RitaMorgan · 09/05/2011 11:17

Teddy was a name before Teddy bears ever existed - I think it is fine as a nickname, but it does need a fullname.

JeremyVile · 09/05/2011 10:37

Willow5 - I feel 'orrible now. Sorry. And yes, I'm sure your Teddy is bloody lovely Smile

JeremyVile · 09/05/2011 10:35

I LOVE both Edward and Theodore.

Teddy is awful. Sickly and contrived sounding. And probbly a bit trashy too. Although there is probably a very brief period when it would be fairly acceptable for a baby.

Theo and Ed are lovely.

mopsyflopsy · 09/05/2011 10:30

Too twee for me, I'm afraid.

Prefer Theodore or Edward.

evamummy · 09/05/2011 10:22

Teddy is the name of a bear, a Teddy Bear.

It might be cute for little baby but I wouldn't personally give it as a name, I prefer Edward or Theodore, although both are quite popular.

IWouldNotCouldNotWithAGoat · 09/05/2011 03:38

Teddy is horrible. Sorry! Fine as a nickname for a 3 year old but not a full name, bleurgh!

midtowner · 09/05/2011 02:54

ds2 (9) has a friend who is Edward, nn Teddy. I've not come across any teasing.

willow5 · 09/05/2011 02:51

I have a Teddy (Theodore), he is 3 and loves his name. he will makes a great doctor one day (or whatever else he chooses to be). He is who is is, Teddy is his name and suits him perfectly. He goes to pre-school and there is no way he would get teased there because he is just Teddy (and a lovely little boy at that)

Minnieheehee · 08/05/2011 21:37

Loving the brutal honesty. Erring to Theo at the mo :)

I love Teddy as a nickname for babies and tots

Edward or Theodore are lovely and more suitable for the full given name

Maybeitsbecause · 08/05/2011 17:18

Theodore is very nice. Theo is OK, too.

Teddy is unbearably twee. Hate it, sorry.

pointydog · 08/05/2011 15:55

I would stick with Edward. Much nicer.

I love the names Ed and Eddie. Teddy sounds a bit daft to me.

RitaMorgan · 08/05/2011 15:53

Theodore is a great name - call him Teddy if you like it, he can become Ted as he grows up. Also gives him the opportunity to reinvent himself as Theo when he's older!

Mamaz0n · 08/05/2011 15:53

There is a well known MNer who has a DS named teddy.

I personaly would use Edward or Theodore and having Ted or Teddy as NN.

ExitPursuedByALamb · 08/05/2011 15:51

Agree Teddy fine as a baby, but Ted as he is growing up surely?

ChessPiece · 08/05/2011 15:49

Calling him Teddy okay perhaps as a babe within the family, but call him Ted with outsiders? He probably wouldn't thank you being called Teddy once he started pre-school/school - I think he would be teased.

wineisfine · 08/05/2011 15:45

You can call him Teddy as a nickname, and I knew a Ted growing up (short for Edward), but don't lock him into Teddy forever!

I think Teddy could be lovely for a baby/toddler but it gets a bit Jamie Oliver (Buddy Bear...), after that.

MercurySoccer · 08/05/2011 15:42

Theodore/Theo and Edward are lovely names.

Ed is OK as a nickname but I just think of Teddy as a toy.

MelinaM · 08/05/2011 15:18

Edward and Theodore are both lovely names, I adore the nn TeddySmile ...tis not twee at all!

colditz · 08/05/2011 15:15

Far too twee. Theo is fine. You could go and see a Dr Theo Brown about an ingrowing toenail - I couldn't stomach seeing a Dr Teddy.
