Im keen but husband not so sure. What connotations does it bring to mind? Our first is Rex. Maybe they will sound like a pack of dogs? (but then our dog is called Barbara....)

Rex and Spike together definitely sound like dog's names - however, I kind of like them, even though I wouldnt' use them myself (sorry, not trying to damn with faint praise!) LOL at Barbara the dog!

If you and dh like it and are comfortable with the fact that a lot of people won't like it, or will have strong opinions, then just go for it. I'm a firm believer in children's given names just becoming them, IYSWIM

highlystrung · 10/05/2011 10:24

My husband LOVES this name. I'm undecided.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 09/05/2011 20:18

Fantastic nickname, crap proper name.

Da1ryQueen · 09/05/2011 19:09

Call him Michael, then use Spike as a nick name, that way he can be spike, but have a "safe" name for when he grows up!

Nightstar · 08/05/2011 23:04

Terence Alan Patrick Seán "Spike" Milligan

That was his real name - not spike! too awful on a job applicaton!

Go with Sean and use Spike as a NN?

bellamysbride · 08/05/2011 19:12

Love it but I don't know anything about buffy or xmen. I know one little Spike, suits him perfectly.

Maybeitsbecause · 08/05/2011 17:21

Ridiculous, awful and, frankly, cruel.

squeak2392 · 08/05/2011 16:16

Spike from X-Men Evolution springs to mind - he suits the name perfectly, and I personally think that is a hard feat to accomplish.
As a nn maybe, but not as a proper name. I think 'Spike and Rex' says you have a very unique taste.

virginiasmonalogue · 07/05/2011 10:56

Oh thank god I'm not the only one.... we very nearly called DS Spike!!

ColonelBrandonsBiggestGroupie · 06/05/2011 22:38

Silly - it sounds like parents trying to appear 'cool' to me.

Pesha · 06/05/2011 22:32

I think Gremlins.

Actually my first thought was 'you're fucking kidding me?!' but that could be because I'm in a really foul, short tempered mood tonight!

But second thought was Gremlins.

I just can't see a gorgeous little newborn baby with the name Spike. Not unless he's wearing sunglasses and a leather jacket.

womma · 06/05/2011 22:24

Woof woof. Don't do it.

I'm with the majority I'm afraid - great nickname but not an actual name. Similar to Spud.

Also agree that Rex & Spike together would sound like dogs names. In the same way that, to me, Felix will always be a cat Blush.

bilblio · 05/05/2011 23:09

I'm a huge Buffy fan, (particularly Spike... hmmm) but definitely not a name for a human.
Nickname yes, but not a real name, and I'm not one of these people who think children need a "birth certificate" name.

Even Spike Milligan wasn't really called Spike.

WiiUnfit · 05/05/2011 23:07

I think with Rex it does sound like a dog's name, sorry!

But still, your choice. As long as your promise never to name DS3 (if you have one in future) Rover or Fido! Grin

I love Spike but sadly not with a sibling called Rex.

DilysPrice · 05/05/2011 23:00

Mmmmmmmmm Spike
but that's kind of the problem - you'd be advertising yourself as a tragic old Buffy fan, even if you aren't one.

Also not an actual human name.

singersgirl · 05/05/2011 22:55

Think Rex is a wonderful name and was very keen on it for DS2, but DH refused because he thought it was too doggy. So I'm afraid Spike and Rex is a bit much..

Beyond that, I really don't like Spike as a name. It's.... spiky, harsh, what you do to people's drinks, what needles do to you.

FunnysInTheGarden · 05/05/2011 22:54

NO. You can't call a child after a dog. Spike is just awful

Trinaluce · 05/05/2011 22:52

Bulldog in Tom and Jerry or (admittedly delicious) vampire in Buffy for me, sorry.

With eldest being called Rex, I would suggest you name your third 'Fido' Wink

ReshapeWhileDamp · 05/05/2011 21:49

MissMary - three Spikes? Really? But surely these are Cool Hmm dudes in their 20's or 30's (or god save us, their 40's) and not sweet little children? Surely? There aren't really baby Spikes being wheeled about in Bugaboos, are there?

Sorry. Spike is a nickname for an adult, a peroxide vampire or a retro bulldog. I would put on my judgey pants and hoist them high if I ever encountered a parent daft shortsighted stupid daft enough to saddle a child with this name.

As a nickname yes. As a name no.

(World's biggest Spike Milligan fan)
