Would people think this was a bizzare name choice?

We are TTC at the moment and are starting to discuss names for our (yet to be conceived!) first baby.

DH absolutely adores the girl's name Amina. I also think it is a really lovely name, but as a white couple living in the North East with absolutely no family connections to the Muslim faith (other than friends/colleagues etc) would people think this was an utterly bizarre choice?

Interested to hear your thoughts.

Thanks all, looks like DH wins! I think Cote's feelings are perhaps similar to my own which were that as it is a Muslim name, would it be perceived as 'strange' if used by a non-Muslim family. But it is a very lovely name so I am tempted despite the fact I am not even pregnant yet-

Good question rachel. Mary is Jesus' mother.
I really wanted to call our DD ZamZam (it is the holy spring at Mecca). DH talked me out of it. Fine while we lived in the ME, but in England it would be Zaaaaaaam.
OP, once again I say, if you like it, have it.

rachel1970 · 05/05/2011 13:33

Cote, what is wrong with Amina being Mohammad's mother? Does that make it an unsuitable name? Why?

rachel1970 · 05/05/2011 13:33

Oh, sorry wheniwish, I though you had referred to Amina. Sorry.

CoteDAzur · 05/05/2011 13:09

I would find it strange, sorry.

Amina was Mohammad's mother.

Surely there must be another name you both adore, which is more relevant to who your future daughter will be.

wheniwishuponastar · 05/05/2011 12:46

Rachel - i already said I like Amina.

ragged · 05/05/2011 12:24

It would make me raise an eyebrow, but not critically, just curious.
I know a WASP English family that gave their son a very Arab name... Tariq? Something like that.
I'm sure you can make it work.
DC play a complicated role game with a main character called Aisha in it (we are very white family living in a very white area...)

kreecherlivesupstairs · 05/05/2011 12:24

Amina is a character in the magic key. It is a lovely name, but Amina magic key is a PITA.
if you like the name and providing you have a DD, go for it.

rachel1970 · 05/05/2011 12:15

So just because the name happens to remind you of an old tv programme that most of us have probably never heard of you would advise the OP against using such a lovely underused name Hmm?!

wheniwishuponastar · 05/05/2011 11:55

No not Amira - she is a hateful character on a programme i used to watch...

tummytickler · 05/05/2011 11:50

Really lovely. I went to uni with a lovely Amina and I have always thought it was a very beautiful name.

pinkmagic1 · 05/05/2011 11:48

I love it but prefer Amira.

wheniwishuponastar · 05/05/2011 11:46

yes its nice

rachel1970 · 05/05/2011 11:44

Lovely, easy to spell/pronounce and not already overused.

nethunsreject · 05/05/2011 10:49
