My son is called Piper and it is a fantastic name, suits him down to the ground. It is not an American name at all, it is Old English and it is a name that has come down through my ancestors.

mrsdaz · 05/05/2011 10:14

I like Piper but prefer Pippa

HappyWifeandMum · 05/05/2011 02:49

No. Definitely no. I find it very unappealing and a bit on the senseless side, and I'm on this side of the pond! Hmm

happyjules · 04/05/2011 23:01

It is not American. It is in fact an old English name meaning pipe player. I think it is a gloriously upbeat and pretty name and unusual enough in the aray of overused names. No chance of being on of several of that name in a class. Love it which is why I have one!

ohdoone · 04/05/2011 22:26

Don't like Piper and Pippa means wank in some languages an blow job in others!

twooter · 04/05/2011 20:55

It made me think of 12 days of Christmas, and a pony I used to ride.

MelinaM · 04/05/2011 20:52

No, it's simply awful, and American sounding to boot!

MercurySoccer · 04/05/2011 20:46

I'm afraid my first thought was the Piper Alpha oil rig, sorry. I do think Pippa is a lovely name though.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 04/05/2011 18:16

I first thought of the French connotation too. Although my French isn't great so I might be mistaken.

wheniwishuponastar · 04/05/2011 18:15

haha - go for it! people will get used to it.

TeacupTempest · 04/05/2011 18:12

Ok so a few more positive responses so it's not all bad.

Thanks for the replies everyone.....although perhaps some where a bit unnecessarily harsh.

I think it's quite sweet, unusual but easy to pronounce.

wheniwishuponastar · 04/05/2011 17:34

I like it, but then i like American names.

virginiasmonalogue · 04/05/2011 17:09

i love it. I wanted this for DD1 but DH veto'd it!

serendipity16 · 04/05/2011 16:31

I like it although i prefer the name Pippa more.

Pippa would be on my list if im lucky enough to get pregnant again.

PistyNoMates · 04/05/2011 15:47

I know an American Piper who is 3 and it is sweet on her.

cumbria81 · 04/05/2011 15:43

it's hideous.

I know a Piper and she is a lovely little girl and it really suits her. Although it wouldnt be one of my choices as its a bit "out there" and I am more of a traditionalist when it comes to names.

blindmelon · 04/05/2011 15:21

I know a very cute baby girl called Piper. It's a bit american for my taste, but I do think it's quite sweet. Sounds like a feisty little american gal!

suwoo · 04/05/2011 14:56

It sounds like a Cabbage Patch Kid name. I like Cabbage Patch Kids.

yomellamoHelly · 04/05/2011 14:49

What about Pippa instead? (a la Kate Middleton's sister)

lljkk · 04/05/2011 14:43

I think it's very pretty, Piper Laurie is what it means to me. More thoughts here. But don't choose it if you can't stand a polarised response.

TeacupTempest · 04/05/2011 14:22

"with so many surnames" ?

ninedragons · 04/05/2011 14:18

Sounds like an offshore oil rig with so many surnames.

Really ghastly, sorry.
