DH and I like both, but we each prefer a different one... which do you like best and why??

Sebastian

pinkwineandsensations · 10/05/2011 10:40

Thanks all. Think we like Sebastian best at the moment! Would like something more unusual than Isaac for a middle name though me thinks! I'll get my thinking cap on!

I love Sebastian, it is what I will use if this baby is a boy. I don't mind Seb as a NN, quite like it.

fivegomadindorset · 08/05/2011 19:33

I have a Sebastian, usually Seb or Bastian but also Basil and Seabass, middle names are Wilfrid Joseph

Fredfred · 08/05/2011 19:13

OP you have picked my two absolute favorite boys names ever. Unfortunately it is unlikely I will ever get to use them though as I have 2 DDs!! Absolutely fab names, great whichever you choose. Sorry not much help though!! Blush

wineisfine · 08/05/2011 17:32

I have a Sebastian Isaac and we did dither on the name order. I love Sebastian though - he's Sebby at the moment but there's loads of scope to change. We decided that Isaac as a first name would tip the boys' names too much to the old testament side of things. It's a great name though.

BaronessBomburst · 06/05/2011 23:02

Rachel1970 - Basty as a little too close to Bastard?! PML at that. No. It rhymes with Pasty. Grin

pinkwineandsensations - middle names are William Alaric. I don't like William much but it was important to DH. Alaric was king of the Goths and lead the sack of Rome in the 4th century. I love the name. and it suits the little sod perfectly

HattiFattner · 06/05/2011 15:51

isaac is great unless your surname is Hunt.

Or Kite....

fishandlilacs · 06/05/2011 08:11

isaac is great unless your surname is Hunt.

I always wanted it on my list but DH said no.

rachel1970 · 05/05/2011 15:36

Basty Shock - a little too close to Bastard, no?

glendathegoodwitch · 05/05/2011 10:28

i have an Isaac (almost 12) so was pretty much one of a kind for a few years - we never shorten it to Zac we shorten it to Iz or Izzy (as my nan pointed out thats short for isabelle - but suits him in a very non girly way) my dad always calls him Ike which he loves lol

QueenofDreams · 05/05/2011 08:06

My Sebastian's middle name is James. I don't tend to shorten his name, but DP's siblings for a while called him Sebby which is just naff. I think they only did it because they knew DP wouldn't like it. I really don't mind Seb as a shortening though.

pinkwineandsensations · 04/05/2011 23:23

Thanks Baroness, these name books all say different things, so I don't know! :) I do like them combined (and either way they sound nice with surname), but as they are the only two boy names I like enough as first names (except for DS1's name of course), what if we have a DS3 in the future?! Soo you have a Sebastian?? What is his middle name?

OP posts:
BaronessBomburst · 04/05/2011 23:04

I thought Sebastian meant 'man from Sebaste'? And speaking from experience Grin it gets shortened to Seb, Sebi, Seba, Baas, Bassie, or Basty.

I like Isaac too. How about combining them? One as a first name, the other as a middle name, depending on your last name of course.

pinkwineandsensations · 04/05/2011 22:53

Interesting, thank you all!

I too love that Isaac means 'laughter', which is what makes me lean towards it I think. And I quite like all its nicknames!

However, Sebastian has a pretty good meaning too I think - 'revered, venerable'. And I love Seb. And it is a little bit more unusual.

Hmm, decisions...

Isaac - means laughter, love that. And mine gets a wealth of nicknames and variants; Isa, Is, Itzac, Izzy - but have never had 'Zac'. Like Seb too, but you risk 'Baz'. And 'Bastian', which is too pretentious for words.

Dinosaurhunter · 04/05/2011 20:47

I know a iSaac spelt izak , but. Adore sebastian .

Bagpusstree · 04/05/2011 20:43

Isaac, because I have a very cute one, and actually don't know any others. He also never has it shortened (yet), but when his little sister starts to talk, I think he will be Ike for her ease!

Mrsmackie · 04/05/2011 12:58

Both lovely but prefer Isaac - and lots of sebastians around here at the moment.

tammytoby · 04/05/2011 12:12

I prefer Isaac. I really dislike the Seb in Sebastian as it reminds me of sebacious (oily). Also dislike Sebby.

MercurySoccer · 04/05/2011 11:30

I like them equally - not much help, sorry!

MelinaM · 04/05/2011 10:39

Love, love, love SebastianSmile

bruffin · 04/05/2011 10:22

Sebastian- it was my fantasy name for DS, but DH wasn't keen.

grubbalo · 04/05/2011 10:17

I prefer Isaac (but am biased!) - incidentally he has NEVER been zac - more often than not he is "just" Isaac, but where we do shorten it we would call him Ike or Ikey.

Do very much like Sebastian though, Bass is a great nn - unfortunately DH disagrees - god knows what we are going to call DC3 if it turns out to be another boy!

twolittlemonkeys · 04/05/2011 09:45

I prefer Isaac, not keen on Seb as a nn (or Bass as my friend's DS is called)
