Hi there,

I am making a list of my first thoughts for a baby girl.
Some of them may be a bit unusual so please let me know (gently) if they are dreadful or hormone related madness!

Here goes:

Adela/ Adelaide
Allegra
Aphra
Ariadne
Astrid
Blythe
Cassia
Camille
Giselle
Genevieve
Hermione
Juno
Jessamy
Noemie
Petra
Paloma
Ramona
Raphaela
Rania
Saskia
Valentina

Apologies for the length!
Suggestions of other names in a similar vein welcomed.

Noemie -- nice without the final e
Petra -- 'wanted a boy'
Paloma -- lovely
Ramona -- dislike, prefer Renata
Raphaela -- too frilly

Lots of very pretty names. I particularly like Genevieve, Juno and Ariadne, I've considered Genevieve and Ariadne myself.

Unfortunately none of them pass my Dad's test for a good name. You need to be able to yell it down a beach without feeling foolish, and with my northern accent I'd definitely feel very foolish shouting any of them :o

cazzybabs · 02/05/2011 11:46

I like Astrid

aliveandkickingme · 02/05/2011 11:44

fanjo- tis tempting to have a large family just so as to be able to use lots of lovely names!

miss- thanks for suggestions. Dulcie is sweet but perhaps a little too sweet. Tacita- not sure about the meaning and sounds v serious if you seem what I mean.

Bloomin fab names, you've got to have lots more children after this one!

My thought are as follows:

Adela/ Adelaide - not keen
Allegra - a bit viola-playerish
Aphra - like it
Ariadne - not keen
Astrid - love it, but would have reservations about a name beginning with 'ass' sound
Blythe - not keen
Cassia - love the way it looks and sounds
Camille - love it again, lovely sound and looks nice written down
Giselle - like it very much but would have reservations about 'jiz'
Genevieve - too likely to be Jenny I think, which I'm not keen on
Hermione - too Harry Potter
Juno - loved the film, like the name
Jessamy - sounds made up to me, even though I know it isn't
Noemie - not keen
Petra - I know one, but I always think of dogs
Paloma - love it, but I want to be Paloma Faith so maybe that's why
Ramona - feels very masculine to me
Raphaela - only with Italian roots
Rania - feels Persian or Indian to me
Saskia - not keen
Valentina - like it very much, but would hate Val as a NN

Good luck giving birth to baby DD!

Adela/ Adelaide - Lovely. Would personally be tempted to use Adelaide as mn instead of first, but wouldn't find first name unusual. I like Adele too.
Allegra - Great.
Aphra - Okay. Kind of suggests African heritage to me. Also, could sounds like Afro in some accents.
Ariadne - Love!!!
Astrid - Beautiful.
Blythe - This is on my longer list, but I've been mostly shot down for it.
Cassia - Love. My preferred Cass- name.
Camille - Much prefer Camilla. I'd just think Kamil if I heard this.
Giselle - One of those posh names that was adopted by harlots in Victorian times, and that's how I see it.
Genevieve - Love.
Hermione - Love. On my short list.
Juno - Okay. Not spectacular, but pretty.
Jessamy - Weird.
Noemie - Prefer Noemi spelling. Sounds too much like No, Emi! to me.
Petra - Not personally, but I wouldn't look down on it.
Paloma - A few years ago I'd have said 'way OTT', but since Paloma Faith and the (I think) Top Model contestant, I think it's fine. Pretty, but not for me.
Ramona - Love.
Raphaela - Would assume Italian heritage, but pretty.
Rania - Do you mean Raina? I like Raina.
Saskia - Love, but would assume E European heritage.
Valentina - Love, but would assume Italian heritage. Good as a mn though.

Would use anything BUT Camille, Giselle, Jessamy, Noemie, Rania, Saskia. Possibly Aphra as well, but I'd have to see it on a baby first to tell.

cowboylover · 30/04/2011 01:45

Hermione and Paloma are my favourites from your list but that's because they are on mine as well! Smile

TerrysNo2 · 29/04/2011 23:52

Allegra
Blythe
Camille
Ramona
Saskia

My preferences from your list

Plonkerr · 29/04/2011 23:43

Adela/ Adelaide - hmm, Adele is quite nice
Allegra - an anti-allergy drug
Aphra - Makes me think of Aphrodite, which is quite something to live up to ...
Ariadne - lovely
Astrid - I think this is quite a 'hard' name. I'm not keen.
Blythe - In complete contrast to Astrid, this sounds a really gentle name. I think it means joyous too?

Cassia - I quite like this, and Cassie is adorable
Camille - Lovely. Love the nn Milly too
Giselle - Very fairytale. I like it though.
Genevieve - My fav from your list. Beautiful!
Hermione - It's ok. Will forever (for me) be linked to HP, but that's no bad thing as she is brave, loyal, gifted and beautiful
Juno - A little too cosmic for my liking
Jessamy - I prefer Jessica
Noemie - This just sounds like Gnomie to me I'm afraid
Petra - German javelin thrower. I know you didn't ask, but that's what I think of when I hear Petra ...
Paloma - Don't like this
Ramona - I don't like this either
Raphaela - Too arty
Rania - No
Saskia - Sassy. I like it
Valentina - Too fussy
