If a girl, what do you think of the name Agatha? Is it too old-fashioned? 'Her' brother is called Charles.

i think Agatha is lovely but the nn Aggie mages me think 'Eggy'

localcrackpot · 15/06/2011 22:53

Agatha is Greek (ancient, at least - I don't know modern Greek) for noble. Would be agathos to describe a boy, so agatha describes a girl. Like it very much but fear it's a bit spiky for a tot.

I think it's on its way back. I've come across two little Agathas this year.

Trinaluce · 29/04/2011 22:44

I love it but DH thinks it's still too 'dusty'. He also says it's still too connected with Agatha Christie. Really? Sharing a name with the best selling author of books of all time is a problem?!

DitaVonCheese · 29/04/2011 20:59

Ah, I've loved Agatha for years. It's so pretty if you get over the old lady maiden aunt knee jerk thing and reapproach it as a name in its own right.

my friend has a 12 yr old called agatha, i really like it now, but initially i was unsure

she also has a rosie and an olive, both of which i also like

Mamaz0n · 29/04/2011 20:18

How about Agate, which is related to Agatha but also has another meaning of a semiprecious stone? Or Agata, which is the Italian and Spanish form of Agatha?

freesias · 29/04/2011 17:08

love it but unfortunately dh didn't . i think of agatha raisin who is one feisty lady .

BeeMyBaby · 28/04/2011 18:46

I think Agata (Polish version I think) is absolutely lovely, and obviously can still have Aggie as a nn.

mathanxiety · 28/04/2011 16:37

I really love Agnetha and Agnes.

I love this name but couldn't convince my dh.
I work with a lovely one in her early 40's (agie is her preferred nn).
However she hates her name and always has simply because she was always the only one. She has deliberately picked top ten names for her girls as a result.
I think it's supposed to be having a bit of a revival among well heeled Catholics but I've yet to hear of a baby one here in Manchester.

ggirl · 28/04/2011 16:08

I prefer Agnes or Agnetha.
My gran was Agnes .

virginiasmonalogue · 28/04/2011 16:01

I think it's lovely!

mathanxiety · 28/04/2011 15:56

Beautiful.

smother · 28/04/2011 15:40

Not at all keen, I like this type of name but I don't like the sound of Agatha.... prefer Agnes, Ines, Anthea, Edith, Tabitha, Martha.... not sure if that helps at all.

mamma2boyz · 28/04/2011 15:34

I think it is lovely, know an almost 4yo Agatha...Aggie for short and she is adorable...much less common than Matilda...
Also know an Agnes who is cute

I like it. Depends on your accent, though.

pilates · 28/04/2011 15:32

Not really, how about Matilda?

Tolalola · 27/04/2011 19:35

Don't like it at all, sorry. I think it's ugly.
