What do *you* consider to be "horrible" names?

HappyWifeandMum · 27/04/2011 05:34

I was reading another thread here, where many people referred to a particular name as being "horrible". So it got me to thinking... What constitutes a "horrible" name, and how does that perception change from region to region?

Please... This is NOT to offend ANYONE... I just truly want to get a feel for what you think are truly awful names. Opinions vary greatly across the globe, and I would love to be able to compare them.

Here's the deal... I would be very grateful if each poster would post (as nicely as possible) the names they dislike the very most, and why, without taking merciless jabs. Also, if you are comfortable with it, would you please list the continent or country you are from as well. I am hoping this will be fun and informative!

Here goes... My uncontested, most disliked name of all time is "Nevaeh". Why? Because I think it is beyond senseless to reverse the spelling of a common word and call it a name. (North America)

Amelia - it is also the medical term for a birth defect with missing limb(s). Why use a name which also means this?

poppydaisy · 28/04/2011 11:23

But why should we EXPECT everyone to love our names, our clothes, our wall colours etc. Of course they shouldn't! We thankfully all have different tastes.

I'm surprised how defensive people get on this thread, having to defend their child's name. There will always be some who dislike it. Accept it. And how boring would it be if we did all have the same tastes Smile.

Casey76 · 28/04/2011 11:23

Ashley always reminds me of Ashtray..

libelulle · 28/04/2011 11:18

I think all this all proves is that someone, somewhere really hates your name, your DH's name and your DC's names. But I am the exception. Everyone must love my name since it hasn't been mentioned yet

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 28/04/2011 11:18

Don't like Freda or Frieda but for some reason love Frida ...

freesias · 28/04/2011 11:16

morag , hilda , freda
but i love gladys and augusta no accounting for taste

Childishoos · 28/04/2011 11:14

Laynee.
Stanlee
Courtnee

Both just wrong in my opinion. (I know someone who has actually used those and spelt them that way)

poppydaisy · 28/04/2011 11:14

And who cares if someone prefers to use the French version of a name and someone else the English or German or whatever version? Again, that makes life more interesting imo.

poppydaisy · 28/04/2011 11:13

I'm struggling to see the point of this thread...Hmm.

Ok, so we all have different tastes. Thats good isn't it? Wouldn't it be boring if we all chose the same 'mumsnet approved' names?

usualsuspect · 28/04/2011 11:08

Every single one of my families names has been mentioned on this thread [proud]

therugratref · 28/04/2011 11:06

Hooray one of mine made it- though my benedict is not in the least bit wet or slimy.
I hate made up names and names with unecessary french accents or german umlauts put in to make them look interesting

strawberrymewmew · 28/04/2011 11:04

Ragwort I was named after a perfume, it's not even a first name it's a last name and it's spelled wrong! I am in the process of changing it. :D

I don't like the name Ashley, out of the possibly hundreds I've met, I have only met one who was a nice person. I also hate the name Graeme.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 28/04/2011 11:01

Don't like old-man/old-lady names like Archie, Stanley, Edith, Maisie.

Loathe Noah. I find it unspeakably worthy and earnest.

Names that sound 'wet' to me e.g. Nigel and Brian.

Benjamin ? a bit flopsy and foppish. I think it's just the J sound that I object to though as I quite like Ben and love Benedict.

Don't like Oscar ? good name for a dog but not a person IMO.

I'm in the UK.

Names I dislike include

William - hate the Willi sound
Alfie/Archie - too cutesy and faddy
Zak/Zach/Zac - sounds harsh and incomplete
Fin/Finn - again sounds incomplete and too 'trendy'
Place names - Brookly, Florence, Paris, Madison

dubaipieeye · 28/04/2011 10:55

Benedict - sounds like a slimy wet handshake to me

Toby - but just because I was bullied by one at school!

Daisy - is a pets name. It might be cute for a little girl (or better, a little dog) but who wants to be 45 and called Daisy??

froot · 28/04/2011 10:48

Colin because it sounds like colon . Yuk too bowelly . Unfortunately it's my dh 's name - it really put me off him initially - have still never learned to love the name only the man !

Soraya - sounds too much like psoriasis - again yuk yuk yuk !

sophiesmummie · 28/04/2011 10:44

There might be a correlation between a parents' choice of name and their parenting approach. In other words parents who prefer to name their children Freddie/Charlie/Alfie as opposed to Frederick/Charles/Alfred might have a different parenting style than those who prefer to give their child a more formal name.

Casey76 · 28/04/2011 10:35

I guess you mean Freddie is a distruptive brat because his parents chose to put Freddie on his birth certificate instead of Frederick who I assume is a little angel????

How ridiculous are you???

AKMD · 28/04/2011 10:18

Dwayne. Wayne. Saying those names is like chewing sticky toffee.

bananamom · 28/04/2011 10:00

Hilarious. Do you seriously think little Freddie is so naughty because he doesn't have Frederick on his BC?

I hate the sorts of names that MN deems 'chavvy' (Jayden etc.)

I also have an irrational loathing for Isla.

Nicknames on the birth certificate make me want to kill. I have a cousin and a step-cousin both called Freddie; one is actually Frederick, the other is not. Guess which one is a screaming, disruptive brat.

pilates · 28/04/2011 08:40

Phillipa, Edna, Ethel, Hilda, Beryl, Barbara, Nora, Kayleigh, Chelsea, Olive, Penelope

Kayden, Hayden, Derek, Kevin, Connor, Felix, Theo, Leo, Bradley, Elliott, Jaspar
