Can I name my child after a Ninja Turtle?

I'm only half joking.

Girls names are fine. But if this baby turns out to be a boy, we're really struggling. We like several names but don't love any of them enough to know it's the right one. DD LOVES Raphael, largely because the Ninja Turtles are her heroes. Usually I'd say because she's 3, her opinion doesn't count (her toy panda is called Roscoetina for example) BUT the more she insists, the more I'm thinking 'well, Rafe's quite nice'. It's the hormones isn't it?

I can't have a Rafe can I? Certainly not just because dd likes the Ninja Turtles this month and I can't come up with any better ideas.

To give you an idea of names I like...

Seth
Silas
Amos
Inigo
Emrys

If it's a girl she'll be Josephine Aphra. It had better be a girl really.

Any ideas?

I'm not pregnant, but I'm getting more and more fond on Raphael and Leonardo each day. Even though they are annoyingly popular where I come from...

cheeseandmayo · 08/05/2011 00:37

Just had to say I love the name Rafael.....but I only think of one.....

Nadal >swoon< Smile

youngmummyb · 06/05/2011 23:58

Are your hormones affecting your name choices?

lol :) x

IngridBergman · 06/05/2011 20:16

Grin I'm ever so glad you got a Rafa. Josephine will have to wait.

caramelwaffle · 06/05/2011 19:49

Congratulations

LoonyRationalist · 06/05/2011 13:24

Congrats Turtle - great name choice :) Lets just hope he look like a Rafa now when he arrives!!

WeAreNewHere · 06/05/2011 12:45

I love the name Raphael (especially after seeing the Sistine Chapel) and would like to have chosen it for our baby, due in September... but I can't pronounce my Rs very well and the thought of yelling 'Waaafael' down the street is excruciating! Rules (wules?) out Rufus too, which I've always liked after Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure...

TurtlesAreRetroRight · 06/05/2011 08:15

I promised I'd come back and tell you... Scan was a week ago and it looks like he's Raphael after all. He's mostly referred to as Rafa or Rafe but...

HE IS A HE WITH HE PARTS!

I like Raphael. Plenty of people are using/considering Leonardo right now, so why not? It's not distinctly Turtle to me.
If I were Italian I'd have them all on my list :p (apart from Michelangelo - he'd have to be just Angelo, I'm afraid).

southofthethames · 23/04/2011 04:07

Was a bit disappointed you weren't thinking of Donatello! (nothing wrong with that one either if you live in Italy.....)... would have made a v lively thread!

Raphael is great (meaning "God heals"). The Ninja Turtles themselves were named after male painters anyway, certainly it wasn't a problem for Leonardo DiCaprio!

My son is Xavier Raphael - it is a good name :-)

mixedmamameansbusiness · 21/04/2011 19:28

I liked Raphael for our DS3 but the few friends I mentioned it to instantly thought TMNT as we are of that generation.

I think it is great though. I know a MNer who named her daughter Lola because DD1 loved Charlie and Lola.

Hatterbox · 20/04/2011 17:39

Dorothea is Dotty, sometimes Dora or Dot, but never Thea.

Josephine Aphra Mirabel is beautiful.

Thank you, you do too, but that's obvious! Grin

TurtlesAreRetroRight · 20/04/2011 17:30

If this one is a dd she'll actually be Josephine Aphra Mirabel but if I have a 3rd dd, she'll be Dorothea. I like Dotty. Lovely.

Oh I love Dorothea. Beautiful name, lots of lovely nicknames too.

You have excellent taste. In television programmes and names. Grin

I love Josephine, but it was one of two names that my twin sister (plenty of twins in our family!) and I both loved, so we agreed that we'd have one each.

I got Dorothea (the name of one of my twin daughters), she got Josephine (which she named her first born daughter).

Loving Aphra too.

TurtlesAreRetroRight · 20/04/2011 16:58

I'm due early September too. Grin

I like Rafi, but it reminds me of Rafiki. Though monkeys are as acceptable as turtles.

I'm rather pleased people like Josephine and Aphra too. I adore Aphra but Josephine is a joint choice.

Ingrid, I do love Leonard (Cohen). Grin

I'm due early September, but with twins usually coming early, I suspect they'll arrive mid-August.

To my surprise, DH liked Castiel, so I think it's a possibility!

IngridBergman · 20/04/2011 09:10

Brilliant thread Grin

I like Raphael, it's beautiful, also Michelangelo and even Leonardo's not bad but I prefer Leonard (Cohen)

Inigo is also a great name.
Amos is very sweet.

Josephine is a brilliant name whatever. Smile

Bubbaluv · 20/04/2011 09:06

Oooh it's lovely! I know a Raphael who is 3 and he is known as Raffy.

severalyearsdowntheline · 20/04/2011 09:02

Lovely but far prefer Rafi as the shortened version to Rafe.

KarenHL · 19/04/2011 21:54

Raphael makes me think of the artist (as does Michaelangelo, or Leonardo) - maybe you have to be of our generation to think of TMNT's? Grin

www.nationalgallery.org.uk/artists/raphael says a bit more about the artist.

darleneconnor · 19/04/2011 21:50

Aphra's a great choice for a girl.

TurtlesAreRetroRight · 19/04/2011 15:27

Supernatural fans would wink and grin at you. They're both fine names. Rafa and Cas. I really like the combination. Congratulations on the twins. When are you due?
