Boys names help - at a dead end

HalleLouja · 15/04/2011 09:15

Girls names we are sorted - there are 4 names we like and we have a top one

Zoe - at the moment our favourite.
Alexa
Sophia
Helena

I / we want something that is not necessarily English as my family are from Cyprus and I now have a typical English surname. We already have an Adam, so that is out of the window and the only names we can agree on that we like are. But not in love with either of them:

Matthew
Luke
James - not keen on nn Jim

The names we like but for one reason or other can't use are:

Alex - my personal favourite
George
Thomas - definitely a no no

Any inspiration will be appreciated.

How about Alec? My 6 year old is named Alec and its just that umph bit different, more unique than Alex. And in various countries, boys named Alec get called Aleco, Alecos, all sorts of cute versions!

Aidan
Alfie
Daniel
Dylan
Darrell
Jacob
Jack
Luke
Marcus
Nathan
Ollie
Samuel

We are liking James and Matthew at the moment. We will see when the baby comes and make a final decision then.

My brother's name is Alex too - I decided on Alistair as an alternative. I love Alexei though, and Alexis is good (personally prefer fem). Too close?

Ellis?

HalleLouja · 17/04/2011 10:46

Forgot to add James is up on the list too. Not sure I could use Jamie as a nn but like it.

What about Max? Or maybe...
Daniel
Isaac
Evan
Lucas

HalleLouja · 16/04/2011 08:09

My brother Alex - we call him Alexi so that is probably not going to work.

Am liking in no particular order

Dominic
Aaron
Alex
Matthew
A variation of Luke

Thanks for all your suggestions - keep them coming.

How about Michael?

Alexander is fab - but why not have Alexei instead? still get the nn Alex but it's not the same; or Alexios is more Greek (Alexei might be too Russian for you) - slightly more unusual name but perfectly normal nn.

Andreas is a nicer form of Andrew, I think - what about that? Ditto Stephanos is nicer than Stephen...
and Mattias is nicer than Matthew...
and with all the above, the nns are very English sounding.

Cristiane · 16/04/2011 05:01

Anselm?

spiderslegs · 16/04/2011 04:52

I know a Silas, he's lovely.

nooka · 16/04/2011 04:49

Elias
Jason
Philip
Nicholas
Silas

or Yianni - I know a lovely Greek American Yianni :)

ALurkerNotAPoster · 15/04/2011 22:14

Great choice with Zoe (I have one so I'm unashamedly biased!)

Her twin brother is Isaac. It does seem to be getting more popular lately but it's a lovely name IMO. It means "he who laughs" which he does, all the time!

Oh...and their elder brother is Alex. We must share similar tastes OP :)

4sophia · 15/04/2011 21:59

I love the name James, though i may be slightly biased as DH is a James. It suits men of all ages and I don't even think it has to be shortened. Hubby doesn't shorten his, so neither does anybody else.

SolarPanel · 15/04/2011 21:51

Luke is very nice. James is also nice and most James's that I know are not nicknamed Jim.

How about...

Matthias
Aaron
Felix
Albert
Francis
Jacob
Zachary
Christian
Emil
Nathaniel
Oliver
Fabian
Isaac
Leopold
Samuel
Tristan
Reuben
Caspar
Hector
Julian
Solomon
Lewis

kitkat1000 · 15/04/2011 21:10

adam or noah? I also like Wilf?

BikeRunSki · 15/04/2011 20:51

I love Luca.

SilkStalkings · 15/04/2011 20:45

Josef?
Doesn't Luca mean dog or wolf in Greek? as in lycanthropy?

isthismadness · 15/04/2011 13:59

Benedict
Louis
Seth
Elijah
Max
Barnaby
Milo
Tobin
Tobias

HalleLouja · 15/04/2011 13:56

George is my dad's name. He would love it but it might not be the best idea.

Will show DH the list and see what he thinks. Maybe he will like something different. Not sure I like Milo but Milos could work....

Although I don't want popular I do not really out there names. Maybe that comes from someone whose mother is called Maroulla! There are some horrid names in my family other than that. I didn't think I was that fussy until now.

I think we might stick with Matthew or Luke / Lucas / Luca. Seems Luca is of Greek origin and its a bit different to the norm.

pilates · 15/04/2011 13:46

Andreas
Elias
George (my fav) - why can't you use this?
Yannis
Milos

meditrina · 15/04/2011 12:59

How about Orthodox saints names?

Anthony, Basil, Nicholas, Constantine, George, Raphael, Gregor, Phillip, Chad, Blaise, Cosmo (Cosmas), Paul, Peter, Demetrious, Herman, Maximus, Simon, Simeon, Viktor, Jovan?

BlueChampagne · 15/04/2011 12:47

Daniel
David
James NN Jamie
Justin

Yes, Alasdair is the Scottish version of Alexander, but you might want a different initial for DC2.

If you don't want anything too popular then dig out your Greek name book!
Bet you won't find Tryfonas in UK top 100!

burntsienna · 15/04/2011 11:30

If you'll consider a Scottish name there is Alistair (variations are Alastair and Alasdair). Just a little like Alex.

HalleLouja · 15/04/2011 11:17

Not that either of those names are popular now - just not keen on them.
