I love the name Rogan and have only ever heard it used as a boys name - but i am in love with it as a girls name :) It's an Irish name - Middle name would be Lilly. (NOT Josh :P )

hey yeh thanks Barbie and WMD - had a feeling that the first issue would be getting people to realise that 'Rogan' is infact a real name - i don't live in Ireland but new it was an Irish/ Gaelic name so was keen to here from people in the know. Thanks for the input!

SaffaSouthernFairy · 12/04/2011 15:34

No you are not. Surely The Ramones is a plus point for the name? Grin

Jajas Ramona is THE BEST NAME IN THE WORLD and I will make someone on here use it if it kills me.

SaffaSouthernFairy · 12/04/2011 15:28

i already paid tribute to the 'curry' 'joke' in my OP - thereby making all your 'jokes' old and not funny. MWAHAHA :P

"...how many school children are that familiar with their Indian menus? Like i said - it's a proper name, not like i'm calling her Peaches or Apple"

Yeah. But is an unusual name and it is a boys name. It's like calling a boy Amarylis. Do it if you're set on it, but you're kidding yourself if you recokon she's not going to get ribbed for it a lot.

Also, my son knows the name of plenty of curry dishes (including rogan josh) and he is pre-school.

And anyway they're in school a long time you know -they don't stick in reception. They go on to be ten and thirteen and seventeen..... Teenagers can be cruel to each other too. Imagine some lad she fancies saying to her, "God, no, I'm not going out with bloody Rogan Josh, hahahaha".

You are joshing us surely?

DownyEmerald · 12/04/2011 15:16

I don't like it, and tbh I wouldn't like it for a boy.

CeliaFate · 12/04/2011 15:13

I don't like it. It's harsh sounding, not at all feminine.

SaffaSouthernFairy · 12/04/2011 15:12

yeh do like Ramona - little girl from Outnumbered is called that - she is so sweet :)

Thanks for the link foofffy - and thanks notanumber, but how many school children are that familiar with their Indian menus? :) Like i said - it's a proper name, not like i'm calling her Peaches or Apple :)

Rowan is nice. Ramona is fantastic.

Ramona Lilly....

notanumber · 12/04/2011 15:05

Not my personal taste, but it's ok I guess.

However - if you think that you - as her mum - are getting a bit of a ribbing with the old Rogan Josh curry jokes before she's even born, try to consider what it will be like for the poor girl in the playground when she's nine.

It is a name which invites piss-taking (goodnatured or otherwise). I think you need to bear this in mind when you are considering choosing Rogan.

You will be making the choice for her but then leaving her to deal with the fallout for the rest of her life. It takes a lot of confidence and self belief to not be bothered about an unusual name with an automatic joke attatched and she might be very shy or sensitive....

Of course she might totally suit it and absolutely love her name, but I do think you need to give it serious consideration.

I really like Regan too.

Rowan Lilly is gorgeous though..

FoofffyShmoofffer · 12/04/2011 15:03

this site

Found it on here as a first name. In fact there's some really nice ones if you sift through.

MmeSurvivedLent · 12/04/2011 15:01

Regan is better.

Although that then reminds me of Ronald.

Rowan Lilly is lovely.

SaffaSouthernFairy · 12/04/2011 14:59

PS once heard of triplets being called Rogan, Regan and Reagan!!!!

BarbieLovesKen · 12/04/2011 14:58

Rogan is definately a boy's name though - I wouldnt name a girl this. I really like it but to me, (Irish, living in Ireland) its definately a surname.

It means red haired.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 12/04/2011 14:57

I prefer 'Ree-gan' as the pronounciation. If DS2 had been a girl, it would have been his/her name Grin
