Viking/Norse names for a boy

womma · 11/04/2011 22:07

SIL is about to pop and it's a boy. She has scandinavian roots and a boy called Tor already but is stuck for a name for the new addition. (Oh, and a very tricky double-barrelled surname to boot) Any suggestions gratefully received!

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Rafe is at the top of our list for impending ds2 at moment- means 'wolf' and if spelt this way (not Ralph) is Norse in origin

I love scandi-ish names as well, they are fab!

BikeRunSki · 12/04/2011 19:40

Love Anders, works well in English too.

Prunnhilda · 12/04/2011 19:36

No are they good or bad? Grin

Carrotsandcelery · 12/04/2011 16:50

Have you read the "Ingo" books by Helen Dunmore Prunnhilda?

Prunnhilda · 12/04/2011 15:54

Ingo (was on my list but DH said no Angry)

womma · 12/04/2011 15:52

I think they do carrots - our Tor is a one man ball of thunder alright. Give him Odin as a brother and I can imagione their house having a storm cloud over it and circling ravens! Easy to spot though.

womma I wonder if the gods' names would tempt fate? Maybe I need to rename my ds with one of them - they would suit him Grin

DaisySteiner · 12/04/2011 09:01

Oh wow, what a lot of lovely names there are! Thanks very much for these. I'm going to email them to SIL so she can peruse and choose, so thanks from her as well, she'll be very happy with these suggestions.
I like the idea of having boys called Tor and Odin, the gods of thunder and rage, haha!!

My family are Danish, ds's middle name is Anders as its a family name. Also have an Axel in the family.

mathanxiety · 12/04/2011 03:58

Somhairle/ Sorley is an Irish name that means 'summer wanderer' -- Viking in other words.
Raghnaill / Ranald also has Norse antecedents.

Olaf/ Amhlaibh (pr Owliv)

Asmund is a nice Manx name.

meadowlarks · 12/04/2011 01:11

Oh, and I have two Scandinavian friends called Joss and Jaaky (pronounced Yoss and Yackee) if that floats your boat.

meadowlarks · 12/04/2011 01:10

Anders, Soren, Liev and Lars were all on my list but got shouted down when I posted them here.

jellybeansontoast · 12/04/2011 00:03

Johan? Pronounced Yo-han.

Or what about this one: Jocke. You pronouce it with the 'o' to sound like the 'o' in 'on'. Yo-kay. But not to rhyme with OK. I think it's lovely.

ResurrectionByChocolate · 11/04/2011 23:52

Ragnar, but not Snorri please.

QueeferSutherland · 11/04/2011 23:40

Odin.
MN name par excellance.

I LOVE Anders.

Soren, Magnus & Lief are lovely too.

I really like Scandinavian names.

DitaVonCheese · 11/04/2011 23:39

loler · 11/04/2011 22:56

Isn't a dag the pooey bit around a sheeps bum? Not a good name if living in an English farming area

lipslave · 11/04/2011 22:55

I knew a Tor. His brothers were called Lief and Soren.

saralyn · 11/04/2011 22:51

cazzybabs · 11/04/2011 22:47
