What do you think of the name Norman for a boy? My brother laughed when I mentioned it.

What do you think?

pranma · 11/04/2011 14:19

He's not Normal...no he's Norman[cue shrieks of laughter] overheard in playground some years ago.Children today will make the association with Naughty Norman Price from Fireman Sam.Please....don't do it.

eggspectantmum · 11/04/2011 14:18

Like Norman. But please not Stanley as second name!

MooMooFarm · 11/04/2011 13:56

It's an old-people name that's not cool again yet and I can't imagine it will ever be! And also no to Normandy for a girl.

How about Raymond, Gerald or Lawrence (going on the theme of un-trendy old-people names, but nicer ones!).

nomorefrizz · 11/04/2011 13:55

Norman Cook alias Fatboy Slim he must be the only cool Norman on the planet. Don't do it.

tonythetiger · 11/04/2011 13:38

My cat is called Norman. He's gorgeous, but a bit of a plank (as someone said upthread about Normans). I really wouldn't.

LadyOfTheManor · 11/04/2011 13:36

No. Norman is for old people, a bit like;

"Let's have a sherry with Norman & Marge". That doesn't sound out of place does it? No, it doesn't, that's the problem.

ivykaty44 · 11/04/2011 13:29

Norman Bates was the physco in the shower ewewewew Shock

mamalovebird · 11/04/2011 12:59

I had a hamster called Norman.
I also once worked with a lad called Norman. He was young, good looking, cheeky and a hit with all the girls. They certainly weren't put off by his name Wink

blondepinhead · 11/04/2011 12:42

When I was little I had a rabbit called Norman, after Norm from Cheers. He was lovely. The rabbit, I mean

I think it's a great name, obviously. As you were :o

mamalovebird · 11/04/2011 12:24

If you like it, go for it. It's not that bad a name. I think Norm would be quite cute on a little boy.

My brother and SIL have just had a boy and named him Sidney, which I like. I toyed with Archie for my ds but am glad I didn't go for it now as there are lots of Archies around now.

One of my NCT friends didn't tell anyone her chosen name as she had had a few negative reactions and was worried but she went for it in the end and I can't imagine her ds with any other name.

tryingtoleave · 11/04/2011 11:56

I'm with bubbaluv.

Ariesgirl · 11/04/2011 11:55

For God's sake woman are you out of your mind?

I'm with your brother I'm afraid!

burntsienna · 11/04/2011 11:32

What would you critics think about Normandy as a name for a girl, I wonder?

MamaLazarou · 11/04/2011 11:22

It's a great name, and would have been on my shortlist if it didn't sound so wrong with our surname.

tallulah · 11/04/2011 10:13

You are not serious?

Norman is a word we use for someone who is a bit of a plank.

Please don't do it.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 11/04/2011 10:09

Margles what excellent taste your friend has. It isn't me, I have one DD.

muminthemiddle · 11/04/2011 10:06

I don't really like it tbh.

Margles · 11/04/2011 09:55

kreecher - since I have a friend with sons called Adrian and Duncan, I thought that you must be the same - but you can't be.

Norman is OK as a name, no worse that all the Alfie's, Archie's etc. etc. which seemed horribly old-fashioned until little tots started sporting the names.

ElsieR · 11/04/2011 09:25

Thinking Norman Bates. Psycho shower scene. No.

meditrina · 11/04/2011 09:03

Norman Stanley Fletcher?

Bubbaluv · 11/04/2011 08:56

Here in Aus there used to be an ad campaign (community health thing) to get people to do more exercise. There was a fit active woman trying to encourage her fat, lazy husband to get up off the sofa.
The ad company chose the name Norm for the fat man. I can imagine the ad execs sitting around trying to decide what name best conjures up their character and result was...

kreecherlivesupstairs · 11/04/2011 08:36

No. Just that. No.
Consider Duncan or Adrian.

Cattleprod · 11/04/2011 08:29

He's the asbo kid from Fireman Sam. Or a very old, very geeky man who collects stamps and has a trainset in his attic.

Imagine your DS as a cool teenager trying to chat up a pretty girl - 'Hi, I'm Norman'. Bet you wouldn't see her for dust!

Easterfeaster · 11/04/2011 08:03

I had two in my class in the seventies. Why did it go out of fashion?
I blame it on Norman Lamont
