Evelyn? EV-lin or ev-UH-lin?

Title says it all, really. Do you pronounce Evelyn with two syllables or three? DP claims he can't hear the difference, but to me they sound significantly different, and if we use it I want to choose which way to pronounce it, rather than just 'falling into' one pronunciation or the other.

the two syllable pronunciation is more popluar with new babies because it is prettier then Evuhlin, but it's one of those names that you are not going to be able to make everyone pronounce it the way you want it to be pronounced.

I know one (2yo) and hers is pronunced Ev Lin....

helendigestives · 07/04/2011 12:29

Ev-er-lyn, but with only the slightest hint on the middle syllable. (I think you will get quite a few 'eev-lin's too.)

MadreInglese · 07/04/2011 12:16

EV-er-lyn IMO

I thought Eeev-lin was the usual British pronunciation.

My 89yo American aunt is Ev-lin, always has been, which I like best. Have never heard "Ev-uh-lin" before (have only lived in the UK for 19 years, though).

It always used to be pronounced with three syllables.

For 92 years, my grandmother pronounced her name "ev-lin".

I had rather thought that the other pronunciation only came along with Evelyn Waugh, but I may be wrong (that's what my grandmother always claimed).

Eve-lin for me too
