Definitely Amy, Esme is becoming rapidly tired.

MackerelOfFact · 07/04/2011 08:00

There have been several Amys in the care homes my grandmothers have both lived in. It does seem to have skipped a generation and I don't think there are many between the ages of 50 and 70 at the moment, but ditto Esme (and most classic names), surely?

bananamom · 06/04/2011 22:36

I do have concerns that Esme is faddy. Amy is more timeless maybe but Esme sounds a bit fresher (but this will fade I guess as it becomes more popular).

Esme is much nicer.

Don't really see why Amy is particularly more timeless - surely it has only been in vogue since the sixties/seventies, whereas Esme is a bit more old-person chic. I have never met an Amy in her seventies/eighties (maybe that is just me!)

Valinor · 06/04/2011 21:37

Amy because it is more timeless

LaydeeC · 05/04/2011 22:33

Definitely Esme (pronounced Esmee). I have one and she loves her name.

HopingForAZoo · 05/04/2011 19:28

I am 25 and I wont tell you what my name is. Wink but I have always loved my name. It is neither dated nor trendy. Although I don't know any Amy's of a young age. I love Esme also and read in a baby name book that it is Anglo-Saxton for Amy.

shimmerysilverglitter · 05/04/2011 16:32

Esme, pronounced as Es-mee, it is my favourite girls name but was vetoed by ex.

5DollarShake · 05/04/2011 16:28

I would go for Esme if I thought people were going to pronounce it Es-may. Not if they were going to pronounce it Es-mee. It is popular at the moment, so will probably date. Amy is more timeless.

Amy is lovely and classic. Esme is a bit faddy, she will have a brother called Finley or Noah.

booandbump · 05/04/2011 10:09

I prefer Amy. I think Esme sounds quite harsh. Also the difference ways of pronouncing it puts me off.

NatMac · 05/04/2011 10:06

Esme - very pretty and slightly unusual

meditrina · 05/04/2011 10:04

Both are fine - I prefer Amy (and don't know any in RL - do know two x Esme (both Ez-may)).

Perpetuallypregnant · 05/04/2011 10:01

I really like Amy actually

think it has more longevity than Esme which will date. I know amys of all ages.

sancerrre · 05/04/2011 00:55

Amy

startail · 05/04/2011 00:53

Amy or Amiee either is due a comeback and with all the Eleanor, Ella, Ellie, Evie, Eva, Emilys and the one Esme around here we really don't need any more E's

qwerty123 · 05/04/2011 00:25

Esme

CharlieCoCo · 04/04/2011 23:36

Esme without a doubt, Amy I think is a bit boooring.

dollyk · 04/04/2011 19:45

I like amiee spelt the french way is nicer i think?

exoticfruits · 04/04/2011 19:12

Amy

CharlieCoCo · 04/04/2011 19:06

both are nice, depends if you want a common name or a more 'exotic' name.

nancy10 · 04/04/2011 18:05

Amy, but it depends on where you live and how popular it is there. Esme is sooo popular that I've gone right off of it and it was a name I had quite liked. And I find the whole EsME EsMAY thing annoying!
