DS2 due shortly and we finally have a shortlist :) Middle name will probably be Robert (family name, don't like it enough for first name), surname is three syllables. DS1 is Rufus. Want a name which is a real name but not in top 100 or so. I know these aren't to everyone's tastes but they're the ones OH and I like - I'm not too fussed about which of these we end up with so just wanted to get an idea of reactions from MN :)

So:

  • Humphrey nn Humph - think this is currently my favourite, not put off by Humps or camels
  • Mortimer nn Mort or Morty - OH's favourite, don't care about death link, might be quite cool if he ends up being whatever the 2025 equivalent of a goth is Wink
  • Wilbur nn Will - DS1's favourite apparently! Love Will as a nn

Thanks!

That's more what I expected Grin

SecondComing, I like Wilbur, don't particularly like William, Wilfred or other Wil- names. However, I know from experience that most people, including me, are far too lazy to use someone's full name, so it will get shortened (I don't particularly like "Roof" but that's what DS1 ends up as a lot of the time); plus, as someone else said, it gives him the option of a relatively common nn if he really hates his full name.

Mopsy I've known a Will(iam) for most of my life and he's never been called Willy, though does get annoyed if you call him a silly billy.

Yes, Wilbur is a pig. Tabitha and Felix are cats, Jemima is a puddleduck, Tom is a kitten, Peter and Benjamin are rabbits and Samuel is a rat. This does not bother me :)

ChippingIn It would make it quicker when calling them in for tea though Wink

Sounds like Mortimer is winning in the same way the Tories won the last election Grin

They are all real recognisable names. If I was going to try to be yooneek then there are much much worse names I could use Wink

Humphrey/Humph is bad....really bad...actually, it's beyond bad...it's awful.

Wilbur doesn't excite me at all but Will is okay.

Mortimer is the best of the bunch - I quite like it actually but only because it sounds like a bumbling professor sort of name.

Greenwing · 28/03/2011 20:19

Surely most people are just too polite to post and say that these names are really pretty dreadful?
Each to their own but they will raise eyebrows, cause hilarity, invite mockery and potentially bring grief to your DS. IMHO that is. Sorry.
If I had to pick I would say Wilbur because at least he can call himself 'Will'

LessNarkyPuffin · 28/03/2011 17:55

OK. Should have put:

Really dislike the names but Rufus is fabulous. Are you sure you wouldn't use Robert as a first name/that those names are your final shortlist?

ChippingInMistressSteamMop · 28/03/2011 17:47

LessNarky - yes, but she can't have Rufus1 & Rufus2 Grin

LetThereBeRock · 28/03/2011 17:30

Humphrey is a truly terrible name, and that's putting it mildly.Definitely not that.

Love Rufus. Mortimer is just about ok.

I hate Wilbur. It makes me think of the pig from Charlotte's Web.

LessNarkyPuffin · 28/03/2011 17:23

I love Rufus. It's a lovely name.

mopsyflopsy · 28/03/2011 17:19

Please don't call you son anything containing mort - the death association is not good imo.

ChippingInMistressSteamMop · 28/03/2011 16:18

Ummm....

How do I put this.... no, no & definitely not.

If you are definitely going for one of these - then Humphrey, it's kind of cute in a 'isn't that an elephant' kind of way, the others are ... ummm ghastly.

But hey - if it was left to me then we'd all need numbers after our names!

Checkmate · 28/03/2011 16:15

Morty is cool. Goes well with Rufus.

mopsyflopsy · 28/03/2011 16:11

I have a popular name and hated being one of 4 in my class, I was always known as little XX or XX B. So for many parents popularity affects their name choice.

I love them all Smile. Ace names!

But I think Humphrey goes best with Robert as a middle name.

TRYSOR · 28/03/2011 15:05

Mortimer every time humphrey reminds me of an elephant.
and wilbur is the name or a pig in charlottes web i think, Good luck he will be your baby only you have to like it .

mopsyflopsy · 28/03/2011 15:03

Thesecondcoming, surely the whole point of naming someone or something is to identify them as uniquely as possible - and as there are already a lot of Williams it makes sense to choose a different name Confused.

JanMorrow · 28/03/2011 15:02

Out of those, Mortimer. Wilbur makes me think of the pig in Charlotte's web, although it is quite cute. I'm not a fan of Humphrey at all.

mopsyflopsy · 28/03/2011 15:01

I prefer Humphrey. Dislike Mortimer - it doesn't roll of the tongue easily imo. I'm not keen on any Wil names (Wilbur, Wilfred, William etc) as I don't like the nickname Will - (Will, will you...Grin) and it is indeed to close to Willy!

Like Wilbur best and think that it goes the best with Rufus. Nice that his big brother likes it too Smile

Playdoughmustdie · 28/03/2011 14:10

Thank you - I make that Mortimer 4, Humphrey 4, Wilbur 1 so far, and no "Hate all of them" which I was expecting plenty of (perhaps people who hate all of them just aren't commenting) :)

glamgrandma · 28/03/2011 12:19

They are both great but my vote would be Mortimer...good luck Smile

evamummy · 28/03/2011 12:16

I like Humphrey. Not keen on Mortimer at all, I'm afraid (perhaps due to the mort beginning) and Wilbur/Wil is a bit dull imo.

dan1981 · 28/03/2011 11:53

humphrey - go with your favourite Smile
