DS2 due shortly and we finally have a shortlist :) Middle name will probably be Robert (family name, don't like it enough for first name), surname is three syllables. DS1 is Rufus. Want a name which is a real name but not in top 100 or so. I know these aren't to everyone's tastes but they're the ones OH and I like - I'm not too fussed about which of these we end up with so just wanted to get an idea of reactions from MN :)

So:

  • Humphrey nn Humph - think this is currently my favourite, not put off by Humps or camels
  • Mortimer nn Mort or Morty - OH's favourite, don't care about death link, might be quite cool if he ends up being whatever the 2025 equivalent of a goth is Wink
  • Wilbur nn Will - DS1's favourite apparently! Love Will as a nn

Thanks!

I like Mortimer, reminds me of Arabelle's raven

my first bump was nicknamed Monty - you can trust a Monty. Second bump was Bomber Confused

witches · 13/04/2011 10:12

None to my taste either but im sure you wouldn't like my choices either!

AuraofDora · 12/04/2011 21:51

Montgomery, Monty is cool
dont like Humphrey, Herb /Herbert better i think
Rufus can just see a dog sorry, Reuben?
Dom ..Dominic
er, dunno..

Whatevs · 12/04/2011 21:45

Hideous. All of them.

Rufus is a dog's name.
Humphrey is a teddybear's name.

Mortimer is one of the most ghastly names I have ever heard. Seriously. Mort? Come the fuck on.

MirandaGoshawk · 12/04/2011 21:44

Sorry, it wasn't Rupert, was it? Blush. Is bedtime!

MirandaGoshawk · 12/04/2011 21:42

BTW isn't Rupert normally shortened to Ru? I love that.

MirandaGoshawk · 12/04/2011 21:41

Wilbur, at a push. Sounds American though.

SolarPanel · 12/04/2011 21:38

Wilbur

zozzle · 12/04/2011 13:59

Wilbur. I really dislike the others on your list.

debrs4 · 12/04/2011 10:36

Absolutely definitely Mortimer. In the five minutes it's taken me to read this and drink a cup of tea have fallen completely in love with it. Goes great with Rufus too.

breatheslowly · 11/04/2011 22:33

Sorry, don't like any of them. But clearly have different taste to you - I don't think that unusual names are as easy for boys to carry as girls and I wouldn't give a girl a particularly rare name either.

dreamingofsun · 11/04/2011 22:27

i quite like monty too and rufus. isn't it short for montague? there can't be many of those around - or there aren't here

JiltedJohnsJulie · 11/04/2011 22:26

Humphrey.

Hmmm.

Rufus is a fab name. How about Felix, Rowan, Max, Austin? All similar "feel" to Rufus I think.

The three you've mentioned seem much more... middle aged... than Rufus and so to me, don't go.

dreamingofsun · 11/04/2011 22:16

think you are picking a name because its different and not because its nice. i can see why these aren't in the top 100. at least you shouldn't have our problem - picked a non-popular name which the godparents then copied for their child.

i hate my name, which is not a popular name. i would much rather have 1 in the top 10. think of the child that will have this name for the rest of its life.

wibur is favourite - but only because it can be shortened to something decent.

BeanaReena · 11/04/2011 22:06

Wilbur is my favourite :)

BikeRunSki · 29/03/2011 19:27

Wilbur will prob be shortened to Will at some point, and there will be many 1000s of Wills this year.

Happymummy2011 · 29/03/2011 19:22

Could you do Monty instead of Morty? Not wild about Humph and Will is boring

fallingandlaughing · 29/03/2011 19:20

These all sound like names of elephants, pigs or dogs in storybooks. Sorry.

Wilbur best because it has an OK nickname.

mopsyflopsy · 29/03/2011 19:16

DS is currently reading a book (Mr Majeika) by Humphrey Carpenter. I actually quite like Humphrey Smile.

Ihavewelliesbuttheyrenotgreen · 29/03/2011 10:22

I was going to say 'Monty' as well but wasn't sure what the long version would be. Its a bit like Morty but nicer and goes well with Rufus IMO

BornAgainDomesticGoddess · 29/03/2011 08:50

Don't like any of them, sorry. Love Rufus though - it's on our boy list.

How about Montague - 'Monty'?

Bucharest · 29/03/2011 08:49

I'm afraid I agree with MildManneredJanitor.
All awful. Hard to pick.
Sorry!
At a push Humphrey is the most awful and has the most potential for piss-taking when at school.

randomimposter · 29/03/2011 08:39

good response playdough.

Good luck with your new arrival - hope all goes well.
