Boy names similar to Douglas or Gordon?

I like Douglas and Gordon for a boy but my partner has pointed out the nn issue (I didn't realise, but Gordon -> Gord-o!?)

He votes for John, which I am unsure about - boring? solid and traditional?

The surname is a 3 syllable Mac name

I have gone through the usual lists, baby books etc and am stumped. I would like a name to jump out and announce itself but it doesn't seem to be likely (due in a month and no boy names yet, lots of ideas for girl names.)

I think Douglas and Dougal are great. I am assuming you are in Scotland? I have never come across a child called Gordon down south here - it's a bit of a snigger name to be honest (to adults, esp my generation who might think of 'Gordon is a Moron' but that won't be known among the 'young') My cousin is married to a Gordon shortened to Gord, but they are in Canada!

Hamish (ds's middle name after my Scottish grandad) is my fave. I wanted it for his first name but dh didn't. I don't think it would be shortened to Hammy, more likely Hame, Hames or Hamie.

Douglas is a fab name!

A friend of the family has just had a boy and called him Jura Smile. When DS2 was born my midwife's son was called Oban.

Surely John becomes Johnnie or Johnno just as Douglas becomes Doug or Douggie?
Anyway, what about Geoffrey?
Love Alistair and Cameron. Also Richard, Robert, Patrick.
Are you anti nn in general or are you just anti Gordo? What's wrong with the Douglas nns - i think they're great!
If you're anti nn then you really have v few choices. DS1 is Leo and no one has come up a nn for him other than that he calls himself Leo Meo.

John is a wonderful name.
Everyone will know it, it is a classic name and yet he will probably be the only boy in the school called by it. Not boring at all.

If not, how about Jonathon?

Most of my children have very short names. Their friends lengthen into nicknames. You can't control what other kids call them in the playground or what they decide to call themselves.

If you like Douglas and Gordon then use them. Especially if you have a mac surname, they will go well. Lovely classic names, won't date them or embarrass them ( unlike so many names mentioned here on mums net)

0891 - nothing wrong with Douglas - I love it - but OH pointed out about all the short versions and I thought a nice name with no or fewer short versions would be good (if that exists [smile).

Also, ahem, I feel that morally I should avoid any names of exes. But since I met OH in my 30s that's not as easy as it could be.

Thanks though folks - there's a lot of ideas here that weren't included in the baby name books I've been through.

John is actually a very unusual name for a child now. So not boring at all.
