Boy names similar to Douglas or Gordon?

LionRock · 26/03/2011 23:23

I like Douglas and Gordon for a boy but my partner has pointed out the nn issue (I didn't realise, but Gordon -> Gord-o!?)

He votes for John, which I am unsure about - boring? solid and traditional?

The surname is a 3 syllable Mac name

I have gone through the usual lists, baby books etc and am stumped. I would like a name to jump out and announce itself but it doesn't seem to be likely (due in a month and no boy names yet, lots of ideas for girl names.)

Hugo

I have a Douglas John xxxx. I also loved Fraser, Glen, Craig, Murray. Used to find boys names really hard, but now love them and (almost) wish I could have more kids to use up more names. Maybe should get some pets! Grin

I like Douglas, Donald, Finlay, Rory, Ruaraidh, Glen, Fergus, Innes, Angus, Magnus, Murdo and Allan. Some of the place names, Lewis/Coll are nice too.

My son has one of the above names, never had any nn problems (apart from where's yer troosers!)

ValiumSoltera · 30/03/2011 21:28

I've never heard of shove on your coat either! although at school my dad used to call my friend siobhan shove off. boom boom. She tolerated it with a thin smile.

ValiumSoltera · 30/03/2011 21:25

Howard and Bruce?

I actually like Douglas and Gordon though. Sick of hearing the same old names. People so unadventurous with boys names

turdass · 30/03/2011 20:51

KristinaM (whispers) don't worry it isn't my real name Grin

mateysmum · 30/03/2011 16:59

Alexander

Brodie

KristinaM · 30/03/2011 16:55

T urdass- why do your boys have such lovely names when yours is so awful??? Grin

halfcaffodils · 30/03/2011 16:53

Showing my age with the 'Gordon is a Moron' - Google it - Jilted John had a big hit with it around 1978!

turdass · 30/03/2011 13:46

BTW, magnus tells me that he gets 'magnet' at school, which he likes as he is a physics boffin!

turdass · 30/03/2011 13:45

I totally love the name John.

My 2 chaps are called magnus and conan - both nods to their scottish heritage.

pirateparty · 29/03/2011 21:50

Douglas is lovely - but I also like Doug and Dougie.

Angus, Alexander, Alistair, Hamish also similar and nice.

Not keen on Gordon...

I know three baby Jon/John/Jonathans though - think it's nice but not as unusual as others have suggested.

Bubbaluv · 29/03/2011 21:44

Rosscoe is nice.
I don't think Gordon really rhymes well enough with moron to be a problem.
What are your nn concerns for Douglas? Doug is a thug? Seriously though, really not that bad as school-yard taunts go.

mathanxiety · 29/03/2011 19:45

I have never heard that expression.

LionRock · 29/03/2011 19:27

Siobhan = shove on (your coat) Smile

How is Siobhan = Your coat?

LionRock · 29/03/2011 13:22

Thanks again everyone.

Just to clarify, I know nn and contractions are inevitable but would want to avoid some of the obvious derogatory nn. "Gordon's a moron" being an example (that I didn't already know of!) I dunno but e.g. "Hank's a w*" sort of thing. Lydia (teapot), Siobhan (your coat) can be funny or annoying. Sure you can't anticipate them all but it's good to get others' knowledge on that Smile. I did hear somewhere that boys' nn are more likely to be about the names or physical appearance while girls' nn are usually about their character.

Anyway cheers for all the ideas.

There's a little boy at my mums and babies group called Scott, which is rather nice. Also a Rory.

lilitoad · 29/03/2011 11:56

Ross?

GnomeDePlume · 29/03/2011 11:53

Oswin - obscure 7th century Northumbrian king/saint

Saltire · 29/03/2011 11:47

Also all the Gordons and Douglas I know are called gordon or Douglas, no nicknames, but as someone said above, children in the playground will give nicknames regardless

Saltire · 29/03/2011 11:46

Scottish surnames or palces anmes are good

lewis
Harris
Grant
Duncan
Logan
Elliot (a fave of mine, its my family surname)

DrNortherner · 29/03/2011 11:45

DrNortherner · 29/03/2011 11:44

NormanNorris · 29/03/2011 11:43
