Saffron - honestly, poncey and naff or not?

We haven't found out the sex yet, that's in April but we want to pick names ready like we did when I was pregnant with DS so we can call it by it's name instead of Peanut, which is the moniker it currently goes by.

DH mentioned Saffron last night for a girl and I sort of like it but I'm in two minds about whether it's poncey and a but naff. Ghosts of Ab Fab are hauntin me "saffy darling, saffs, saffy ... "

Honest opinions?

I know a saffron, nn saff and she's in her 20's. Never heard of it before that.
But then she does have a sister called Tulip and a brother called Keanen.

My dd2 is Saffron (we are no way near being poncy, in fact we live in a council house and are skint).

She gets called 'Saff' and 'Saffy'

I think its a great name Smile

orienteerer · 31/03/2011 20:39

No, don't do it.

Ragwort · 31/03/2011 20:37

No, don't like it - it is a spice. Why not use nutmeg or clove Grin.

BikeRunSki · 31/03/2011 20:35

I don't like it, but that is just me.

Lollyheart · 31/03/2011 20:31

It's s nice name, my niece is saffron know as saff.

suburbanslob · 31/03/2011 20:25

Mum2Pea · 30/03/2011 13:43

I like it. FWIW it makes me think of the Donovan song, not Ab Fab, which is a much nicer association

ragged · 28/03/2011 20:02

"It's different" says 11yo DS (a girl called Saffron briefly had a crush on him). The Saffron DS knows has a builder father and a motor-bike chick for a mother, so not poncey at all!

Rhubarbgarden · 28/03/2011 19:59

I like it. Nothing wrong with Saffy.

nelly83 · 27/03/2011 22:58

Oops I meant lovely not lively!

nelly83 · 27/03/2011 22:57

Personally I don't like the name although I do know a girl called Saffron and she is lively. I teach a girl called Safia which I think is quite a nice alternative.

saffy85 · 27/03/2011 20:47

I quite like it.

And what is wrong with the nickname saffy? Hmm Grin

ValiumSingleton · 27/03/2011 20:00

Underachieving, Richard is about as likely to be shortened to Dick as Charles is to be shortened to Chuck. Nick names for classic names go in and out of fashion and it would be really deliberately offensive to shorten Richard to Dick. Mind you, There are men out there called Willy and Micky so maybe men like to be named after penises. They can live with it anyway.

ValiumSingleton · 27/03/2011 19:57

I don't think it's poncey but I don't like it.

BeenBeta · 27/03/2011 19:48

I have a niece called Saffron. You wouldn't call her poncey, or her mother.

olympialimpet · 27/03/2011 19:46

What's wrong with the name Willow?

loftyclodflop · 27/03/2011 04:09

no to saffron. and no to willow (in case you get inspiration from this thread).

saffronwblue · 27/03/2011 03:39

It is my cat's name!

maighdlin · 27/03/2011 02:56

no!!!!

Lollybrolly · 27/03/2011 02:21

I love it. I sooooooooooooooooooooo wanted to call my DD Saffron and Saffy for short but DH was not having it.

As it happens she is in a class with a Saffron and there is a child the year below her called Saffy-Rose.

nooka · 27/03/2011 02:18

The Saffron I knew came from a decidedly hippyish family, but she'd be in her 30's now. Also known as Saffy.
