It's scottish, I'm sure; I love it - but what do you think?

Esme is lovely Grin

Meglet · 24/03/2011 13:23

I think its more of a boys name.
Also one of the blokes in Jaws was Brody IIRC. Which makes it cool Grin

TheFantasticFixit · 24/03/2011 12:47

Haha Bilbo that's what comes to my mind when I think of a male Brodie!

RueLaChesty: So glad I am not mad or the only one who loves it for a girl!

Delhi: Your comment was rude then, if not sarcastic. I don't expect everyone to agree with me; that's why I wrote 'What do you think?'. You'll note that I haven't mentioned others who have simply said that they don't like it - because I specifically found your comment sarcastic. Your comment also made the suggestion that all baby girls must have a 'feminine' name or they won't be 'pretty' which I am afraid that I distinctly disagree with. Hmm

Anyway, I do like the name but after a bit of thought think that it might be a bit bonkers without a scottish connection to 'place' it. CarrotsandCelery; that's exactly what I love about both names but now very persuaded by Esme!

I love it, but I am Scottish.
Wasn't there a Brodie in Neighbours or Home and Away?

Highlandgirl · 24/03/2011 11:47

I know one wee boy called Brodie..when he was born everyone when "WHAT"...I'm Scottish and grew up near Brodie so to much it's just a bit odd....!!

DELHI · 24/03/2011 09:00

Not being sarcastic, Fixit - you asked 'what do you think?' of this name. That's what I think of it. There's no point asking if you just want everyone to agree with you.

meditrina · 23/03/2011 23:30

It doesn't do it for me, sorry. My first thought was "The Pride of Miss Jean ...."

ValiumSingleton · 23/03/2011 21:21

eeeooo I like celtic names (Irish, Scottish and Welsh) but Brodie!? for a girl? is that usual in Scotland?

NormanNorris · 23/03/2011 21:09

It's not terrible on a girl but she will be mistaken for a boy. How about Bridie?

Carrotsandcelery · 23/03/2011 20:33

I often feel the overly feminine names can make life difficult for girls. It is fine if you are very girly but what if you aren't? Personally I think a stronger name is more likely to let a girl decide her personality for herself and the nicknames can be girly if they turn out to be girly girls.
I love Esme and know a very delicious, spirited and strong Esme Grin but FWIW I imagine a female Brodie as strong, beautiful and with a mind of her own!

lilaloves · 23/03/2011 20:26

I'm in scotland, never met any brodies male or female.

Do know a lovely little girl called Brogan though.

RueLaChesty · 23/03/2011 20:00

i started this exact thread over a year ago but in the end couldn't use it because of our surname. I 'donated' it to another friend and she now has a lovely brodie! :)

we are in scotland though.

I've always associated it as a boys name but i went to a party and met a very stunning female brodie and it suited her perfectly which is why we considered it. My DD1 also has a unisex scottish name so if it wasn't for our stupid surname we'd have had a brodie! :)

exhausted2011 · 23/03/2011 15:57

I like it, but it's our dog's name!

TheFantasticFixit · 23/03/2011 15:56

Toobreathless/Ephiny - thank you! That is absolutely what I like about both of them. I'm not much of a fan of the Daisy/ Molly/ Maisie ultra feminine names either (no offence intended)

OP posts:
LetThereBeRock · 23/03/2011 15:52

Esme is lovely, and much nicer than Brodie.

Ephiny · 23/03/2011 15:48

I quite like it actually, for either girl or boy, don't much like the meaning mentioned in that link though...

toobreathless · 23/03/2011 15:45

Not a fan of Bronte. Love Esme though. I have to admit I prefer both brodie & esme to the rather twee girlie names that are so popular at the moment.

I can see both as concert pianists, doctors, journalists etc in a way I struggle to imagine a Maisie being.

TheFantasticFixit · 23/03/2011 15:39

Mater - we live about 150 miles apart now and see each other quite infrequently so it wouldn't be too much of an issue to have the same name.

Lolster - good point with the village!

Okay thanks all

I think the more important factor is that if your friend already has a daughter called that then it might be a bit odd and also confusing if you use it for your child too.

Esmee · 23/03/2011 15:07

Not sure about Brodie, it does feel more like a boy's name. What about Bronte?

TheFantasticFixit · 23/03/2011 14:57

Thanks Delhi for your immensely helpful sarcastic comments Hmm

A friend of mine has it for her daughter and toobreathless, you are right. When she first mentioned it I thought 'hmm weird' but now her daughter is here it suits her SO completely and she is the prettiest little thing so I don't think of it as an 'ugly' name at all. I quite like the fact it isn't twee and princessy I think.

But I do accept that without actually being scottish it may seem weird to people!

What about Esme?

OP posts:
DELHI · 23/03/2011 14:47

It's very unfeminine - there are so many pretty girls' names - why not pick one?

BrainSurgeon · 23/03/2011 14:40

I know a guy who's last name is Brodie
