Nameless 2wk old DS!

pushmepullyou · 23/03/2011 10:14

OK so DS is just over 2 weeks old and so far is called boy! We've been through every name registered in the last 2 years and still can't find one that jumps out at us as 'the one'. In fact we're rapidly approaching the point where we don't feel the need for him to have a name at all Grin

DD has suggested 'Grandad' or 'Tigermonster' and tempted as I am by the second in particular I'm not sure either will quite cut it in later life!

It's all complicated by the fact that DH has a long surname that is hard to match. Similar to Blenkinsop, but more Germanic.

I think we're pretty much down to 2 names:

Francis, probably with Frank and (possibly when little) Frankie as nn, and
Felix, no nn.

My main reservations are: Francis is a bit wet, Frank is a bit 'old man', which makes me worry it will date as the old man names are so popular at the moment, and Frankie is another 'ie' name like Charlie, Archie, Alfie etc, which I'm not keen on.

Felix is obviously a cat/catfood, but tbh this aspect doesn't really bother me. After all Thomas is a tank engine! What does worry me about Felix is that the only thing that stops it being another Max or Oscar is the catfood connotation. Plus I'm hoping to have William as a middle name, which definitely goes better with Francis.

I just can't decide what suits him. He's fair/reddish haired at the moment and likely to be bald when he's older!

There's a slight possibility we may be over thinking this! Help!!

My 17 year old son has suggested Reuben or Jonah.

What about Jericho? Short form Jerry.

UndiscoveredApprentice · 26/03/2011 19:21

Felix is lovely, as is Max. Red hair instantly made me think of Rory, Ruaridh. What about Rufus?

If you have Germanic overtones is there a German name you might fancy, I dunno, Hans, Fritz or something? Magnus is another great one.

If you wanted to (whisper) the surname to us, we could help.

Not so keen at all on Francis, to be honest, or any of its nick names.

I like traditional but not really old fashioned names, things like Peter or Donald. Or what about Michael?

A1980 · 26/03/2011 19:16

I ahven't read all of this so I don't know if he's named yet. But TBH I don't like Francis or Felix, they're both a bit wet. Apologies to everyone who has children with these names, of course it isn't personal.

Why not go for something a bit more different. I like Rueben. It means behold a son. Someone else suggested Isaac too which means mirthful. So Rueben Isaac would be Behold a mirthful son .... LOL!

On the subject of 'Boy', I have heard the legend on here of a child called 'Boy' and when his little brother came along they named him 'Newboy' Shock

Some lovely names on this thread.

Grin at Boy(de). Apparently one of my colleagues knows a couple who called their child 'Boy' so it does happen Confused Hmm

I think Rafe is a proper name, but I knew (and disliked) someone who had it as a surname at university, so I'm not sure I can get past that!

Still can't decide though - think we may end up tossing a coin in the registry office at this rate Grin

Could you register him as Boyd(e) - since it's very like Boy?

Hedwig3 · 24/03/2011 10:31

Really like Fraser and Frasier.

Rafe and Marcus are good too.

Rafe is fab!

Prinpo · 24/03/2011 07:14

Marcus is good, I like it.

Agree with previous poster that Frankie is definitely not in the same ball park as Archie and all the other ee names.

RueLaChesty · 24/03/2011 06:56

michael william
matthew william
peter francis
francis james
finlay william
gabriel francis

Names i like are

i find boys names so difficult, luckily i had 2 dds.

Congratulations and good luck.

lazydays2 · 23/03/2011 22:57

If it helps, when we eventually got to a shortlist we then did a little powerpoint show running though all combinations of first name, then with surname and with middle name and with nicknames and randomly displaying them which we watched for ages (a few days!) until we could decide which we thought looked/sounded best, we felt familiar/comfortable with! Is that too much? Even then we couldn't agree so we took turns saying which we didn't want until we got down to two. Then I got to pick as I'd done all the hard work!

annabelflowers · 23/03/2011 22:32

Frederick.

Franklin is lovely. Actually, William Francis is really lovely.

Took us ages to name DS. My DM thought we HAD the name but were not telling her when DS was a bump just to spite her. Grin.

We ended up naming him after one of his Grandfathers thru sheer desperation as we had to go and register him, and it is perfect. :)

Francis, called Frank is nice. And he will be the only one about for ages until it comes back in fashion. (which it will).

CakeandRoses · 23/03/2011 22:24

I don't put Frankie in the same bracket as Alfie et al. I think it sounds much more substantial somehow. i also know a MN with a way cool Frankie so like it even more due to him Smile

I have a Felix so obv love the name, it's seemed to have worked ok for him so far Grin. have only met/know of one other.

our other fave boys names are/were Caspar and Caspian. The former wouldn't work in Germany due to the clown connotations. if dd hadn't been a girl she would have been Caspar William funnily enough.

I like Marcus and Rafe but they don't make me swoon.

mamatomany · 23/03/2011 22:10

I know a little boy called Franklin who's nn is Frank and also a V V dishy 25 year old called Frank who isn't at all wet.

LargeGlassOfRedPlease · 23/03/2011 22:07

Jago...?

pranma · 23/03/2011 22:03

name[where did the w come from?] and I missed the h from have and the n from grandson. In my defence I am a bit ill atm.

pranma · 23/03/2011 22:02

I ave a wonderful 7yr old gradson whose nwme is Francis Thomas-always known as Frank with Frankie occasionally.I think it's lovely for a little boy.

UrsulaBuffay · 23/03/2011 21:56

Ooh ooh -

Gabriel?

UrsulaBuffay · 23/03/2011 21:56

I have friends-ish who have Rafferty nn Raff (ok I have a crush on this name!)

Tillyscoutsmum · 23/03/2011 21:49

I like Fraser. It sounds like you have quite similar tastes to me. DS ended up being Fergus (which I know you've said your not keen on) but other names on the list were:

Rufus
Laurence
Dominic
Flynn
Fraser
Barnaby
Gilbert
George

pushmepullyou · 23/03/2011 21:44

I think DH finds Rowan Atkinson too odd looking to be able to contemplate the name!

Hugo to me is a dark square-jawed chap from romantic fiction and adorable and snuggly as DS is, he doesn't look like he's going to be the dark square jawed type!

I do quite like Franklin, but haven't been sure about it. No surprise there as i'm clearly not sure about anything Grin

DH is suggesting Marcus, Frasier and Rafe this evening.

UrsulaBuffay · 23/03/2011 21:33

Angus?
Patrick?
Rafferty?
Arthur?
Reuben?
Jude?
Jonas?

Prinpo · 23/03/2011 21:09

I think that finding the perfect boys' name is a bit like searching for the holy grail. They're either cutesy old man, traditional and a bit dull, totally bizarre or very 'on trend'. It's a toughie.

Overthinking it is completely natural. It's a big decision and you want to get it right. That said, he'll be fine whether you call him John or Adolf. Would it be worth writing out a definitive shortlist and then giving yourselves a couple of weeks away from it?

FWIW, I'd add my vote to Magnus, Angus or Fergus (spotting a theme here). Also, love Rupert.

Congratulations on your new son Smile. Hope you're all doing ok.
