Hi

I'm really struggling this time round to think of names I like! Well, there is one girls name I LOVE but DH not keen.

Can I share the list with you for feedback? It's really long but I developed this with the idea that there has to be one name on it that DH likes! There are actually a couple he's ok with, but they don't, I think, go with our MN Alice (DH's grandmother's name). Surname is one syllable.

Devon
Iris
Isis
Ramona
Frances
Eloise
Darcie
Scarlett
Aimee
Amber
Maeve
Florence
Agnes
Telma
Esmee
Romilly
Agatha
Innes
Elizabeth
Grace
Jasmine
Maya
Savannah
Indira

The struggle to come up with a boy's name is even worse but I won't bore you with that one - yet!

Thanks everyone! I'm quite surprised how little of the names on my list people like but, then again, it's such a personal thing, I perhaps shouldn't be!

Definitely food for thought. Thanks!

OK well here are my views on the boys' names.

Flynn - dislike
Elliot (or Elliott) - dislike
Francis - like a lot and also like nn of Frank/Frankie
Clarke - no awful as first name
Bailey - terrible
Caleb - not for me but not awful
Seth - ditto
Louis - OK but quite a lot of them about
Jude - girls name
Monty - like this one
Silas - too much like silage
Arthur - could grow on me
Edwin - prefer Edward

sorry about that but only would consider Francis or Monty.

Greenwing · 22/03/2011 00:24

Love: Elizabeth (Classic, beautiful, timeless, lots of nn choices). Elizabeth Alice is excellent.

Like: Frances,Grace

Don't mind: Esmee, Eloise, Florence,

Don't like:
Agnes - Ag is a hard sound
Iris - pretty flower but don't like name
Aimee - pretty but a bit twee
Innes - but Inez or Ines nice if you have Spanish connection.
Indira - pretty but hard to name a child after Indira Gandhi?

Really don't like:
Devon - NOooo it's a county
Isis - Egyptian goddess
Ramona - Ramones were a punk band. Ugly unless you're Spanish.
Darcie - Mr Darcy great, Darcie no unless you are Darcey Bussell the world famous ballerina and can get away with it. It has the sound 'arse / arsey' in it which is a big disadvantage for a child.
Scarlett - Scarlet Woman. 'Scar' for nn? No no no
Amber - Red, Amber, Green?!
Maeve - how to pronounce it?
Telma - uh? Tell me what?
Romilly - Just my personal opinion.
Agatha - Christie. Too old fashioned. Hard sounding.
Jasmine - too flowery for me. Too twee for a grown woman who isn't delicate and, possibly, oriental.
Maya - Mayan civilization in America? Maya -nnaise?
Savannah - African grassland
Indira - pretty but hard to name a child after Indira Gandhi?

bibbitybobbityhat · 21/03/2011 11:03

Frances. By a mile.

PepsiPopcorn · 21/03/2011 11:02

I like Elliot, Francis, Seth, Jude, Silas and Edwin from your boys' list.

Agree that Iris Alice doesn't go well.

telsa · 21/03/2011 10:56

Iris Alice sounds terrible! Maeve and Beth are lovely. Frances, Agnes, Esme are all good. If I were to have another DD (which I won't), I'd choose Agatha. Maya is nice too. But why not go with Alice as first name - that is such a lovely name.

Maternelle · 21/03/2011 08:13

I love Flynn

I like:
Elliot (or Elliott)
Francis
Louis
Jude
Arthur

cremedelacreme · 21/03/2011 00:03

Thanks 80sMum, I feel redeemed! Although my DD1 has a french name, minus the accent, and we're not french, so perhaps best that I don't pick another one!

Hey! Let's set the record straight here. Aimee is not a 'silly spelling!' It's the original French spelling of the name, Aimée, just without the accent. 'Amy' is the anglicised spelling of the original French name.

freyamalaya · 20/03/2011 23:37

Love:

Flynn
Francis
Caleb
Louis
Jude

cremedelacreme · 20/03/2011 23:31

Hee hee, here we go then:

Flynn
Elliot (or Elliott)
Francis
Clarke
Bailey
Caleb
Seth
Louis
Jude
Monty
Silas
Arthur
Edwin

Absolutely

cremedelacreme · 20/03/2011 23:01

Ha, brilliant stuff! DH's no. 1 was Devon (after Devon Sproule, folk singer) but I said it wouldn't work unless you knew the woman and thought she was cool!
My no. 1 was Darcie or Darcey, but it seems that's not popular either, eek!
I do really love Iris, Maeve and Elizabeth (Beth for short) and these were the others on 'my' shortlist, but DH only likes Iris out of those. So, maybe it's gonna have to be Iris then!!! But friend says Iris Alice doesn't work. Grrr, how complex is this baby naming business? Confused

Now, do I share the (shorter) boys list with you??

OP posts:
Tillyscoutsmum · 20/03/2011 21:36

I love Maeve, Florence and Frances. Also like Eloise and Agatha but not sure they work with Alice

smother · 20/03/2011 21:33

From your list, I love:
Iris
Frances
Maeve
Innes
Elizabeth
Jasmine
Indira

The only ones I really don't like are:
Devon
Savannah
Darcie

What about Alice as a first name? It's gorgeous!

OwlMother · 20/03/2011 21:03

Maeve.

Devon seems a little chavvy, Scarlett is overused. Don't like Maya, Indira orSavannah. Do like Agatha or Romilly.

Innes is a boys name.

Darcie - like Darcy
Scarlett - ok
Aimee - silly spelling
Amber - ok
Maeve - lovely
Florence - lovely
Agnes - no - another hard sounding one
Telma - hideous
Esmee - okay but I think only one E
Romilly - don't like
Agatha - hard
Innes - try hard again
Elizabeth - lovely
Grace - nice but dull
Jasmine - ok
Maya - don't like
Savannah - don't like
Indira - don't like

HarderToKidnap · 20/03/2011 20:32

Can I just say that Telma is a popular brand of Jewish groceries. It's a household name for Jews. For Jews, meeting someone called Telma would be like you meeting someone called Tetley or Jif.

vouvrey · 20/03/2011 20:28

Amber
Maya
and
Iris
in that order.

babyapplejack · 20/03/2011 18:28

I like:

Amber
Amy (not Aimee)
Elizabeth, with nickname Beth (my fav) or lots of others

Ondine · 20/03/2011 18:28

Maeve would be my first choice, classy and under used.

Amber is also nice but Amber Alice doesn't work very well.

I'm really not keen on Devon, Isis, Darcie, Aimee (Amy is ok though) and Savannah.

eatyourveg · 20/03/2011 18:27

Grace Amber Florence and Esmee would be my short list
