I love the name Mhairi and would have loved to use it but my partner was not keen (he is English and thought it was strange!) - also we live in England and I don't think it works very well when said in an English accent, particularly northern (not a major problem if you are in Scotland, and everyone will know how to pronounce it).

Carrotsandcelery · 18/03/2011 21:16

A very close family friend of ours is called Mhairi and she is absolutely lovely. It is also my dniece's middle name.
I don't think many people will have trouble with the pronounciation of her name and it only takes two seconds to explain that "Mh" makes a "v" in Gaelic. It is a lovely talking point for her too. Grin
My dd also has a Gaelic name with a spelling that wouldn't occur in English and it has not caused her any problems.

FWIW my favourite boys' names are:
Struan
Angus
Joseph
Gabriel
Charlie

Yes, smiles are always treated with suspicion aren't they. Quite right too.

UndiscoveredApprentice · 18/03/2011 20:27

ah sory missed the mn bit.

PurveyorOfWoo · 18/03/2011 18:30

Flynn is nice, it means son of the red haired man too Smile

PortBlackSandwitch · 18/03/2011 18:22

Pointy - tis fine Grin If you can't say it straight on MN where can you?

(i was going to put a smile but that's so passive aggressive these days i didn't want you to take it wrong)

pointydog · 18/03/2011 18:19

Oh sorry, port. Didn't mean to insult your boy.

frankenonsense · 18/03/2011 18:15

Or, if you like the sound of Mhairi, how about Murray for a boy?

frankenonsense · 18/03/2011 18:09

If you are in Scotland not too many people will have a problem with spelling or pronunciation of Mhairi.

If you are likely to have a red-head boy how about Rhuiri ( choice of spellings there).

talkingnonsense · 18/03/2011 18:02

I have only heard mhari pronounced mar ( rhymes with star) ee. Is it usually va rey?

EdwardorEricCantdecide · 18/03/2011 17:59

pink4ever · 18/03/2011 17:55

I really like it but they will probably get called Mari-ee or Mary. How about Morven?. Also like Rowan(for boy or girl) but dh vetoed itAngry.

LessNarkyPuffin · 18/03/2011 17:55

Do you like the shoes?

PortBlackSandwitch · 18/03/2011 17:54

Undiscovered - OP said middle name would be Jane

PortBlackSandwitch · 18/03/2011 17:53

I had only heard of Rohanne for a girl before coming on MN.

I'll admit it's not the butchest name ever but i just love it. And my Rowan is anything but wet Grin

UndiscoveredApprentice · 18/03/2011 17:53

I know lots of Mhairis, all pronounced Va Ray and I have know idea how you get Mary Jane from that!

theresapotatoundermysink · 18/03/2011 17:52

Never heard it before but really like it. I think it will get mispronounced, when I read it I thought it was Mary. Once you have corrected them though its an easy enough name to say so shouldn't be too repetitive!

pointydog · 18/03/2011 17:51

Rowan is more of a girl's name in scotland. I hae never come across a scottish boy rowan. I'm sure they exist but I think they'd be wet Wink

pointydog · 18/03/2011 17:50

I love Aidan.

Joe. James. John.

OFGS · 18/03/2011 17:50

Ooh, lovely!

PortBlackSandwitch · 18/03/2011 17:50

Edmund (on a roll)

PortBlackSandwitch · 18/03/2011 17:47

Or Rowan (Irish for Red haired, english for Tree Grin)

i have one so i am biased...

PortBlackSandwitch · 18/03/2011 17:45

Aiden seems to fit with what you are after

Or Andrew (too naff?)
