If we decided to call our baby Thom/Tom or Thommy/Tommy which is the preferred spelling? I think Thom/Thommy looks a bit more classy.

Please dont suggest we call him Thomas as it is not an option.

Thanks

Really don't like Thom or Thommy, sorry :/

It's like Jon - don't assume that this is the correct spelling just because it's the literal shortening of the name!! [Talking to people in general, not saying this is what your doing.]

Thom definitely looks like it's short for Thomas, and Thommy just looks stupid.

I also agree about reciting the spelling - I have a perfectly normal name with a perfectly normal spelling, but I still have to spell it out, and it's REALLY annoying. Having to spell out a name should only be the case for unusual names.

although there is more justfication for Thomas - Thom than for the likes of Kharls and Jhoes

activate · 18/03/2011 22:54

Why do people superfluous Hs at names - it's rife in the inner city school where I'm based and so so not classy

MummyTo2Darlings · 18/03/2011 22:51

Go for Tom/Tommy, otherwise he will have to spend his ife correcting everyone.

sarahb16 · 18/03/2011 22:28

Thom is just pretentious.

cece · 18/03/2011 22:22

Just Tom.

Onion1968 · 18/03/2011 22:18

no 'H' unless it's in Thomas. Thom/Thommy just looks stupid

Edmundo · 18/03/2011 22:13

Stick to Tom and Tommy.

MamaLazarou · 18/03/2011 13:56

Tom or Tommy. Why would you add an H??

SunshineOnARainyDay · 18/03/2011 11:01

Thom/Thommy just looks wrong! Thomas and Tom however absolutely fine and a lovely name.

PepsiPopcorn · 18/03/2011 10:56

Tom

Becaroooo · 18/03/2011 09:16

I am biased as I have a Thomas/Tom Smile

Think "Thom" is a bit naff tbh.

Sorry.

Summerbird73 · 18/03/2011 09:16

personally i really dont like it - like an earlier poster said it looks like you are trying too hard to be individual. it is one of those names that makes me cringe.

i do like Tom - and Tommy was my late grandads name and he was great Smile

babyapplejack · 18/03/2011 09:13

You should keep it simple and classic and call him Tom on his birth certificate. You can then call him Tom and/or Tommy as you choose.

I have a name with a less common spelling and TBH, it's just really embarrassing and I wonder what my parents were thinking.

Hedwig3 · 18/03/2011 09:07

Tom

Northernrose · 17/03/2011 19:24

I know a Thom (but it is short for Thomas..) and I think it's fine for him, probably because I've just always known him as that. BUT you would be subjecting him to a lifetime of spelling his name, as everyone would automatically assume and write it as Tom...
For that reason I wouldn't do it, personally. And Thommy does look daft, and your brain does automatically think of the 'th' not the 't' sound.

Think Tom is a lovely name though

weimy · 17/03/2011 19:13

Thom is fine, I teach and have seen one or two with this spelling.

joydivisionovengloves · 17/03/2011 19:09

I cannot begin to fathom why you would put an H where one in just not needed!

limpingbint · 17/03/2011 18:48

Thom is trying to hard - Tom is a lovely name

I have a strange spelling of a common name and it is annoying to have to keep telling people

FlingonTheValiant · 17/03/2011 18:45

Have you been reading Wheel of Time?

flipfloppop · 17/03/2011 18:33

I hate the way Thom looks. Tom/tommy is such a lovely name, no need to spoil it with a "H"

MrsKwazii · 17/03/2011 17:41

Thom looks too try-hard, and he will always be telling people how to spell it. Thom Yorke only just gets away with it - there is no hope for mere mortals Grin

TitsalinaBumSquash · 17/03/2011 17:37

I'm another one with a regular name but an odd spelling... It gets annoying having to spell it everytime.
