Last minute name wobbles - Rosina or Jemima?

DH and I are expecting the arrival of DD2 any day now. My original shortlist was:

Rosina (family name)
Tabitha
Jemima
Nancy

I like names which are classic but not too popular - DD1 is Eliza, which we both love.

DH didn't particularly like any of the names on DD2 shortlist but came round to Rosina with the nn Rosie. His only other suggestion was Kathryn - which is now out due to royal wedding.

I still like Rosina but as we found out the sex this time and have discussed names with family and friends, people have already started using it which has taken the shine off it a bit for me. I am also worried the popularity of Rose names is set to explode over the next few years.

So now I am tending mote towards Jemima. DH has said that after watching me go through labour he knows he'll let me name her whatever I like Grin WWYD?

Also, I don't know, but I think Rose is more common as a middle name, so Rosie should be fine for first name.

I think it's amazing how all your names sound good together (although Nancy only really goes with Eliza).

I used to know a Rosina and I thought she was so pretty because of it. Jemima I love, but I think Rosina's the less popular name. Also, since it's a family name.

I come up with names I love all the time, then I meet or hear of someone with the name and go off it straight away, so I would only use names I'm sure this didn't happen with.
Eg. I love the name Hermione but have never heard of anyone with that name (apart from on censuses) so would normally be worried of losing interest, but the fact that Hermione Granger is such a well known name hasn't put me off using it, so I know it'll be fine.
I don't really understand what you mean by 'taken the shine off'; if it's like my Hermione instance, then you should go with Rosina, as your family love it, but if you think you'll regret your decision (which I've heard isn't that common, even amongst parents who didn't really like the name in the first place), then go for Jemima.

I think it does matter what DH thinks of name - don't use something he doesn't like. However, if you plan on having more kids and his opinion is just 'doesn't love', then go with the name you want and let him have a larger part in naming the next one.

Sorry it's so long; I'm bad at explaining Smile.

I know this probably isn't much help but I love all your names, perhaps Nancy would be at the bottom but I cannot place the other 3! I think whatever you choose will be lovely. (BTW currently 38 weeks and Eliza is my number 1 name for a girl this time and one of my other girls is Rosie, often called Rose, and I think Eliza 'goes' with her name, and the others, 2 more girls!).
Good luck.

cece · 18/03/2011 23:34

My grandmothers were called Nancy and Rosina (but known as Rosie).

So I like either of those.

Pilotte · 18/03/2011 23:33

Jemima is my pick for a girl. Has been for years, hopefully I will get to use it one day!

I love the nickname Mima - too cute.

sonniboo · 18/03/2011 10:09

I think Eliza and Jemima do sound a little too ryhmey, I'm afraid. I like Tabitha and think it goes well with Eliza.

ValiumSingleton · 17/03/2011 21:50

I love Nancy and Jemima

Rosina, although it's a family name, makes me think you couldn't choose between rosanna and Roisin. Tabitha is a witch's cat;s name,.

Rhubarbgarden · 17/03/2011 13:32

Prefer Nancy. Loving the Daphne suggestion too.

pilates · 17/03/2011 13:27

Sorry I think Eliza and Jemima have a similar souund at the end.

migola · 17/03/2011 10:56

much prefer rosina

JiltedJohnsJulie · 17/03/2011 10:52

Don't think they rhyme too much, both are lovely names in their own right.

As long as DH hasn't said an outright no then I would say its ok. Sometimes you just can't both be totally in love with a name.

FollowMe · 17/03/2011 10:51

I think Jemima goes much better with Eliza

NotAnotherNewNappy · 17/03/2011 10:49

Not a labour thread yet...grr

So you don't think it matters that DH doesn't necesssary love the name? Will he grow to love it, with DD2?

Jemima Rosina is lovely - unfortunately mn has to be Elsie (don't ask).

I am now worried that Eliza and Jemima rhyme too much...Hmm

Jemima is beautiful. Yet another beautiful name that bloody DH vetoed.

Jemima is gorgeous and goes much much better with Eliza - lovely combo.
All the best with the birth!

MmeLindt · 16/03/2011 14:25

Oh, is this a baby name or a labour thread?

Thanks everyone.

It's pronounced Rose-eena. I don't think I could go for any other Rose name as it would just seem a shame to use something so close to but not the family name. Plus it is my favourite out of all the Roses.

I'm not worried about it sounding like raisin in German as we don't have any connections to Germany. I wouldn't use it if it meant something horrible or rude in another language, but I quite like danish pastries with raisins Grin

Lol at the musical connection of Eliza and Nancy. I hadn't realised that it would sound like I was raising my own collection of cockney songbirds!

DD1 suggested Mima as an nn for Jemima. I imagine she'd be Jem as a teenager.

I am pleased no one has suggested I need to make more of a compromise with DH.

This is a great distraction, I am currently sat on the loo trying to decide whether I'm having a contraction or not Blush

Jemima is better with Eliza.

mopsyflopsy · 16/03/2011 13:06

Would you pronounce Rosina Ros-eena or Ros-eye-na? The former does indeed sound very close to Rosine (raisin in German). I think I prefer Jemima, nickname Jemma?

Wombletini · 16/03/2011 12:51

Jemima is lovely or even Jemma as a nn
What about Jemima Rosina?

MmeLindt · 16/03/2011 12:44

Not keen on Rosina (German connection here too - reminds me of raisin danishes).

Rosemary would go well with Eliza and you could still use Rosie.

I think that Daphne and Eliza go really well.

rachel234 · 16/03/2011 12:40

Rosina is too close to Rosine (raisin in German Smile), but that may not bother you of course. I prefer Jemima but can't think of any nice nicknames - Jem, Jemmy?

I like the suggestion of Roseanna.
