Caspian ...

I have always loved the names Casper and Caspian (after reading the Narnia books) and have considered both as potential boy names along with Edward, Alexander and Quinn. However, many people comment on Casper being the 'friendly ghost' and not too sure what others think of Caspaian (Cass for short). So I thought I would put it in front of the MN jury. Caspain Edward would be the full name (Edward after my grandad). Opinions please... I can take it Grin

I have a Casper and we debated Cassius and Caspian initially too. Only one person in 20 months has ever made a friendly ghost reference. Go for it! Much more fun than having a name which your child could be sharing with numerous other class mates...just in case he is teased otherwise! Btw ours is nn Cass and not in the least bit girly and we hv had countless compliments on our choice x

I know a Caspian, he's 26yrs old.

I neither love or hate it..... its ok.
I suppose because i know someone with that name, i do think its ok.

I do like Casper.

Thanks for all your comments. They have definately provided me with some food for thought.

I like Caspian although I'm less keen on the nickname Cas or Cass.

I also like Edward and Quinn.

leothelioness · 15/03/2011 17:11

I like Caspian more than Casper.

LetThereBeRock · 15/03/2011 17:07

I think that'd be quim.

wheredidyoulastseeit · 15/03/2011 17:00

Love Caspian with the Narnia reference, but wasn't Quinn used in the film about Elizabeth 1 as euphemism for pudenda?

LetThereBeRock · 15/03/2011 14:30

I love both Casper and Caspian. They're gorgeous yet strong names.
The Caspian sea and not the CS Lewis novel comes to mind when I hear Caspian.

bigbluebump · 15/03/2011 13:10

In German a Kasper is a well known (punch & judy) clown/puppet and kaspern is to be silly, so not a good name to use in the Germanic world imo.

I prefer Caspian and Cassius but you'd need to be happy with the nickname Cas/Cass.

I relly like Quinn and know one who uses it as a nickname for Quentin.

NotaMopsa · 14/03/2011 23:36

I think ick to an awful lot of names - generally top 40 names

I would be secretly jealous of this name!

Underachieving · 14/03/2011 23:33

It's not great, in fact I would say it's borderline passable. As in- you can use it and were I to know you I would pronounce it (and not insist on calling him a nickname like I did to my sisters rediculously named DS2) but I would quietly be thinking ick.

ShowOfHands · 14/03/2011 23:32

I like Caspar (with that spelling). A name is more than just a reference though I don't know who the ghost is tbh. Like Flora is a beautiful name, not just a margarine and Tilda isn't just a rice brand.

Cassius is lovely too.

NotaMopsa · 14/03/2011 23:26

tee hee Dreya it actually has five asterisks but the mumsnet tech have converted it to 3 BOLD asterisks!!

I love your daughters name

Dreya · 14/03/2011 23:15

Cassius was on my list should DC1 have been a boy. I think it's a great name. I love Casper but unfortunately I think it may have been ruined by the ghost! Such a shame as it's a nice sound. (do you like Jasper?) I also love the Narnia books and quite like Caspian but I am not sure I'd be brave enough to use it as a first name. I don't consider it frilly or effeminate. Quite the opposite actually.

I'm curious to know your DS's name now NotaMopsa!

FunnysInTheGarden · 14/03/2011 23:03

really like it, also like Florian. But settled on Fabian! I would go for it if you like it. Am really glad we went with Fabian and not William which was the other option.

montylady · 14/03/2011 22:58

Onion1968 - Thanks for pointing out the typing error. Even us teachers can get distracted when two little ones are making their presence known. How terrible of me not to double check my spelling before posting my thread Hmm. Anyway, thanks for your contribution!

Thanks for all your feeedback. It is just a name I was considering. I also really like the name Cassius (sigh of relief after checking correct spelling).

ignore my odd overuse of ?? even I dont understand that!

NotaMopsa · 14/03/2011 22:34

Caspian gorgeous ?? Effeminate ? not at all. Ignore pre conceptions. My DS 4 was unlucky enough to be lumbered with a name then used by a celeb soon after his birth. The mumsnet threads slating it were AWFUL and did not help me post natally

His name is now LOVED!!! A bloke ( i respect) said to me on friday night 'I've never met *** but I just know he is cool with that name'

Ignore the nay sayers - It's beautiful!

snice · 14/03/2011 21:46

Cassius is better imo

Onion1968 · 14/03/2011 21:45

Caspian is awful, effeminite and unless you are really posh will stick out like a sore thumb. I note also in your post you spell it wrong twice out of the 3 times you type it. Not a great start if you can't even spell the name you want to give your kid.

spiritfingers · 14/03/2011 19:35

I really like Caspian...If you like it then go for it! It's unusual as well as being an established old name. You could always do Cas pronounced like 'Caz' for a nickname.

greenzebra · 14/03/2011 19:22

I love the name caspian, I love the narnia books and the tale of the dawn treader is my favourite. Caspian is a great name in my opinion.
Very Nautical name, caspian sea being the biggest inland body of water. If you like it go for it.

alexaj · 14/03/2011 19:07

Hate them both.

Casper the Friendly Ghost? Horrible.
And Caspian will get the poor child bullied for life.
I like Alexander. Edward is OK. Quinn is... a girl's name surely? And very American?

Nightstar · 14/03/2011 18:53

I really like both Caspar and Caspian. I think they have a great old fashioned ring to them, unlike a lot of the modern 'made up' names. But if you are really unsure, how about Peter? (Narnia)

Rhubarbgarden · 14/03/2011 17:14

Love it.
