I'm strongly leaning towards one but i cant seem to let the others go. theyre too similar to use one for a future child (I think)so i want to make sure its the right one1. any thoughts...

I always thought Margot was pronounced Margott!

I know a few people called Margo - though maybe that's Scottish?

I prefer margo to Margot, Maeve adn Moira!

poppydaisy · 07/03/2011 12:29

I like Moira best from your list - lovely name.

poppydaisy · 07/03/2011 12:28

Margot is a French name and the French often don't pronounce the last t (e.g. escargot). But in English we do pronounce most letters e.g. Elliot, pot, got, bigot etc) so logically you would pronounce the t in Margot.

If you choose to give your child a foreign name then you need to be prepared to educate people as to how you'd like it pronounced.

Needaname · 07/03/2011 12:20

And the people who have pronounced it Margot haven't been German etc., just seem a bit, erm, thick, because they've stumbled reading it and said it uncertainly. ducks for cover

noddyholder · 07/03/2011 12:17

Margot

Needaname · 07/03/2011 12:16

Ooh is she mine thisfeelsweird? :)

Hardly anyone has pronounced her name margott and we've had lots of lovely comments. I was very disturbed to find a Margot at dd1's nursery and there are another 2 in the local school ffs. That's what you get for picking something that's about 850 on the baby name lists. Seems from mumsnet it's due a comeback. I love the Good Life connection but it does mean we can never move a bit further out to Surbiton.

skatpot · 07/03/2011 10:47

Margot, fab name.

argylesocks · 07/03/2011 10:47

do people really pronounce it with the 't'? I never would have thought that. I've always heard it Mar-go. weird.

I like Margot. Maeve reminds me of Maeve Binchy and old Irish women with tissues stuffed up the sleeves of their peach nylon cardigans.

littlemissw · 07/03/2011 10:41

Love Margot! Not sure about Moira and Mauve is quite popular where I live, so not keen. Baby Margot ... how cute! Mabel is another one I love. :)

sonniebonnie · 07/03/2011 10:11

But Margot is only nice when pronounced the French way (without the t). In most languages (German, English etc) people will pronounce it Mar-gott, which isn't as nice imo.

I like Moira best from your list.

ThisFeelsWeird · 07/03/2011 10:02

I know a baby Margot, hers is one of the few girls' names that I remember (in a sea of Evies/Avas/Bellas here in our part of London) - I think it's lovely.

RitaMorgan · 06/03/2011 21:07

Maeve is lovely - it was on our list and I do know a baby Maeve.

BelligerentGhoul · 06/03/2011 21:01

Love Maeve but don't like the others.

PepsiPopcorn · 06/03/2011 21:00

Margot too similar to maggot, sorry.

smother · 06/03/2011 20:47

I LOVE all of these names!!!

my favourite of the three is Maeve, closely followed by Margot (love the nn Maggie for Margot too). Moira is nice too.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 06/03/2011 15:41

Maeve is lovely. Margot is great, reminds me of Margot in the Good Life but that's not a bad thing at all. Not keen on Moira.

olddeuteronomy · 06/03/2011 15:39

Maeve is pretty, not keen on the others especialy Moira! I think the name Moira is not old enough to have made a comeback yet, I would associate with person in 60s as opposed to 80s (like Iris, Ivy, names which are now cool)
I really like suggestion of Maura. Morna is another similar, Scottish name which is lovely and unusual.

SecretNutellaFix · 06/03/2011 15:11

Not Moira. Has unpleasant associations for me personally.

Margles · 06/03/2011 15:09

On the ballet theme there was also Margot Fonteyn.

I am biased - it's one of my nns.

Maeve is definitely my favourite.

MelinaM · 06/03/2011 14:56

Absolutely love MargotSmile Moira is a no, no for me, Maeve is okay if you're Irish or living in Ireland.

argylesocks · 06/03/2011 14:53

yes i was just told of the ol' mrs leadbetter but i hate that one association can ruin a name. it seems really limiting. Ive never met anyone named Margot before and I thought it was pretty but thanks for the thoughts :)
