Why are K names considered "chav"?

Why are K names considered "chav"? I do not understand one bit!

OP posts:

Nikita (one k) is a Russian boy's name. Only because of Elton John and an excellent French film fromt he 1980s, when it was used as a spy's alias, has it become associated with girls. Ridiculous.

EricNorthmansMistress · 06/03/2011 10:13

Kaleb
Karman
Kayci
Kourtney
Kayden
Either completely made up or substituting the original letter for a K to be yooneeq. I think the C/K swap is more common as they have a similar sound which is why the K is considered 'chav'. There are perfectly normal K names (Kelly, Katherine, Karen, Kerry, Kate etc) which are just names that happen to be spelt with a K, they are just names!

shmoz · 06/03/2011 10:12

Unless from Russian stock, I consider Nikkita to be chav

I did think this when choosing DD2's name. I even scour the 'Chav names' threads to make sure it doesn't come up Blush it's a K name but a real one and its not in the top 100, possibly not even in the top 500. But I am aware of the K chav connection which is a bit irrational really because there are so many lovely K names. I never considered Kayleigh to be chav though.

ScroobiousPip · 06/03/2011 09:53

Fair point jkklpu re Keira.

What I don't really understand is the need to misspell names to make them look different. There are so many millions of original, beautiful names out there, why would you pick Kaycee or Kira? The poor child then has to spend his/her whole life labelled as coming from an illiterate background. Life's tough enough - why make it more difficult for them?

shmoz · 06/03/2011 09:50

urgh Kleeo, thats awful

Katherine is an original spelling btw

TinkyWinkyLovesPo · 06/03/2011 09:47

are spelt Blush I blame my screaming baby for distracting me!

Longtalljosie · 06/03/2011 09:46

And I would NEVER consider Katherine a misspelling of Catherine

Considering Henry VIII was married to a Katherine, a Kathryn and a Catherine I think that's a peculiar thing to say. Unless we're saying Katherine Parr was a chav Confused

You may prefer different spellings, but very old names were around long before spellings were standardised, and that's a different kettle of fish altogether.

TinkyWinkyLovesPo · 06/03/2011 09:42

I (personally) think it looks awful when the name that usually is spelt with a C is spelt with a K and it has been spelled differently, usually to make it more 'phonetic' like Kaycee or Kaysi rather than Casey.

Its usually girls names though. I'd expect a boy being called Casey to be still be Casey, chav or not, but wouldn't be surprised to see Kaycee for a girl.

One of my old school friends has called her little girl Kleeo, I hate it and my brain always seems to substitute it for chloe and I have to be really careful to get it right!

jkklpu · 06/03/2011 09:40

"Keira" isn't the "proper" spelling at all. It's either "Ciara" or "Ciera", depending on whether it's the Irish or Scottish form. Versions with a "K" are anglicisations. However, because they are now so common, Keira and Kieran (and other forms) have become accepted in their own right.
These are different from the likes of "Kay-lee" and "Klaire".

SaggyOldBagpuss · 06/03/2011 09:38

But the main problem I have is people not being able to spell my childrens chavvy K names!!

The ammount of times in the last 14 years that dd has had her name spelt wrong is amazing as it's the classic spelling of the name not a new modernised spelling!

And ds his is also the classic spelling but because of the variations that are out there it's also spelt wrong more times than it's spelt right.

And anyway just to make a point, surely if you judge someone on the spelling of their name isn't that missig the point as it's the parents who choose that spelling not the person!

BehindLockNumberNine · 06/03/2011 09:35

Definately not the letter K. I think it is more because many 'made up' names begin with a K.

And I would NEVER consider Katherine a misspelling of Catherine.

nobodyimportant · 06/03/2011 09:35

Wow, first time I've heard my name called chav and I've had it for 36 years!

Kaydee, Kaycee, Kaylee - exactly.

IngridBergmann · 06/03/2011 09:31

No it isn't the letter K. It's names spelt as though you can only speak or think in one syllable.

So you basically take two syllable and stick them together, like Kai den, kay leigh, bran don, Cay don,

Ray lee. (and so on and on and on)

Also when you see a username on here which is just Kee or Jae or whatever, it immediately makes me think they do not know how to spell.

Of course not knowing how to spell does not make someone stupid per se, but they might well be uneducated.

Longtalljosie · 06/03/2011 09:27

I think it's random spellings which are chavvy. If you like Kira, would you consider Keira? Not my cup of tea but it is the proper spelling...

SaggyOldBagpuss · 06/03/2011 09:25

Sooo both of my childlins names are chav according to this...

They both have proper spellings of the name and we have celtic roots which is why we choose them!

Yep thanks for that!

I think it all may have started with Kylie which seemed to be adopted as the new Sharon/Tracy

KenDoddsDadsDog · 06/03/2011 09:13

I've just seen my classic Scottish name being called chav for the first time ever. How insulting!

AnnVeronica · 06/03/2011 09:00

hla19 How about the spelling Ciara?

ScroobiousPip · 06/03/2011 08:56

OK, I'll be blunt, if a name looks 'misspelt' then it does tend to feel a bit common. Whether that's Klaire for Claire, or spelling Kyra/Keira as Kira. Much prefer classical names but that's just my opinion. Sorry.

KidderminsterKate · 06/03/2011 08:53

well my name's Kate and I've never heard it being called chavy before!

also

Kenneth, Katherine, Kitty, Katie, aren't
