Why are K names considered "chav"? I do not understand one bit!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
CheerfulYank · 06/03/2011 22:17

Is it Kayden sprouts? :o

I know a Kinnidi...it's pronounced Kennedy.

upyourdiva · 06/03/2011 20:04

I don't really get 'chav' names.

A name is a word not a definition! Yes okay some names do seem to be more common amongst certain groups IE 'chavs' and 'snobs' etc. But it does'nt mean anything really. A lot of names go from one side to the other. Years ago James was considered a good solid name now some consider it a chav name and no doubt in time it will go back to a classic name.

The only names I truly despise are rediculous ones such as Apple or Tiara (yes I know a child who has been named the latter!)

BehindLockNumberNine · 06/03/2011 19:34

Miranda, I prefer Katherine Smile

MirandaWest · 06/03/2011 19:06

I was the person saying some people might think Katherine is a wrong way to spell Catherine. Was a little tongue in cheek as I am a Katherine and have quite a few friends who spell it Catherine. And obviously my way is the best way Grin.

ilovesprouts · 06/03/2011 18:36

oh cant belive my ds2 chavvy name not on here Grin

JaxTellersOldLady · 06/03/2011 18:08

pranma I know dogs called Kaylee, baylee, Rylee and Marlee - but all spelled 'correctly'. Could never call a child any of those names.

pranma · 06/03/2011 16:21

most names ending in ee seem chavvy to me
Kaylee
Baylee
Rylee
Marlee etc etc

JaxTellersOldLady · 06/03/2011 15:22

There are various spellings of Katherine depending on where you are from. None are chavvy.

I do agree that made up names are not very nice.

I dont like Kloe, Klare or similar.

Astronaut79 · 06/03/2011 15:14

My gran was Kathleen. Don't see that much anymore.

ginmakesitallok · 06/03/2011 15:07

Oooh I do not like K names at all.

It doesnt mean I dislike the person though. I am a TA in school and treat the children the same but there are some names that make me shudder.....

Kyle
Kallum - but not Callum
Kade
Kacey
Kayleigh

but then we have a

Jorja
Kloe
Loukas
Niamh PRONOUNCED NY-AMM

and that makes me shudder too!!

BehindLockNumberNine · 06/03/2011 14:16

longtalljosie you misread me (or I did not make myself clear)
A poster said she thought some people consider Katherine with a K to be misspelling of Catherine with a C.
I meant to in my post that I would never consider it to be a misspelling. I consider it a traditional name in it's own right.

And I prefer it to Catherine with a C.

Confused
meditrina · 06/03/2011 13:29

It comes and goes.

Back in 1981 when it seemed as if everyone wanted to be Lady Di and "The Sloane Rangers' Handbook" was a best seller, the names beyond the pale were all those beginning with "T".

weegiemum · 06/03/2011 13:28

Katherine (personal fave)
Kirsty
Karen
Kirsteen
Kristy

all my dds or friends of theirs.

Not chavvy

in Scotland
(where we don't have chavs anyway!)

Well exactly. My mother's name is Karin. It's German but you occasionally hear it over here.

And Karen of course, one of the ugliest names I ever heard but that doesn't mean it's exclusive to ugly people.

It's just a name. (sorry to any Karens!) People probably hate my name too.

Underachieving · 06/03/2011 13:23

Not even Karen and Kit?

5DollarShake · 06/03/2011 13:19

For me, it is the letter K. IMO, the only K names that aren't 'chav' (for want of a better word) are Kate (beautiful name) and Katherine, but I infinitely prefer Catherine.

I am judgy when it comes to names, but I would never let that judginess over-ride actually getting to know the person and realising there is a hell of a lot more to people than their name! :)

Underachieving · 06/03/2011 13:18

There are quite a few chavvy names that start with K. On the other side of the coin though, many people have pointed out quite rightly that there are plenty of good solid traditional K names. I think it's just that quite a few of the un-chavvy K names are out of fashion at this particular moment. Walking through town you're far more likely to hear someone shout Keiran than Kenneth, so it skews the perception of a K name. There is nothing chavvy as such about a name starting with a K, Katherine and Kate are as traditional as they come. I had a quick think and the first three letters I thought of I could also name plenty of chav names and plenty of traditional names so I think K's not really a special case. (J,C & L)

IngridBergmann · 06/03/2011 13:18

Yes, it is personal. There are many names I hate and many I love.

It isn't because it is used by a certain type of person that I hate the name, it is because I hate the name.

And thus when someone uses a name I hate, and they love it, I generally find we don't share taste in other things either.

but anyway...it doesn't matter. It all depends on what you like.

RipVanLilka · 06/03/2011 13:11

I am fed up of all this stupid 'chav' name idiocy. A name is a name, most of the names here are very pretty, and I have never heard of anyone being held back in life because their name was 'Kira' or 'Kacee'
The kind of name that holds someone back is 'Adolf Hitler Campbell' or 'Anus' or some such

Im sure my DD1's name would be insulted as much as possible if it were on here. I didn't actually name her...but it doesn't matter. Its a beautiful name, and it suits her to the ground.

I like names based on their pronunciation. I like the sound sonme letters make, I don't like others. Its personal to me, and i don't usually class names into categories like 'chav' etc.

IngridBergmann · 06/03/2011 12:39

Often it seems as though people name their children aspirationally, and what those aspirations are can say a lot about their lives.

So for instance if you get a child called Sunflower, it sounds like their parents like nature and sunshine and that sort of thing. Fair enough if a bit hippy.

Or Seraphina, whose folks are probably quite well to do and like paintings of cherubs. they want their child to be beautiful.

and then you get the child who is named Diesel and it sounds like the limit of their parents' aspirations can be found in a mall in Trafford.

Of course I'm generalising but you can see what I'm getting at I think.

sevendwarves · 06/03/2011 12:38

Serena mine is "chavvy" too apparently

SerenaJoy · 06/03/2011 12:27

So my name is chavvy apparently, and is being tarred with the same brush as the heinous 'Khloe'. And there I was thinking it was a widely accepted alternative spelling of an old Scottish/Irish name. Well I never.

Hmm
