Would Gabriel be teased?

DH and I love the name Gabriel for a boy but worry he would be teased when he got older e.g name shortened to Gay instead of Gabe (I'm thinking Meet the Fockers with Greg aka Gaylord). Does anyone have any experience of Gabriels? Would it be better as a middle name as I really like Theodore Gabriel too x

His parents are British, and it is spelt Gabrielle. They like it that way because it's different. I'm sure he'll change the spelling when he realises their error.

in some countries Gabriel (for a boy) is pronounced very like Gabrielle

so if his parents are not British that may be why. ds2 has a nursery teacher who is Eastern European and she pronounces it Guh-brielle

Love the name....know two gabes at sons school and the name is considered cool by all of them!

I think I can imagine it on the football field... but it would be Gabe. 'Oi, Gabe, over 'ere' Grin

No. Don't think I am 'getting confused' Fourleaf. As I said - wouldn't do for everyone to have the same opinion which, if I remember rightly, is what the OP is after.

I think it's pretentious in the extreme. Can't imagine it going down well on the footy field either. But it's not my son! You might hate the names we've chosen.

I have an 11 year old Gabriel - occasionally shortened to Gabe, more usually full name

He gets teased for lots of other things (he's a delightfully eccentric little boy) but only once for his name and that was a couple of years ago

I love the name Gabriel and I have a... Ruben, so I must be posh then! It 's a gorgeous name, go for it!

I love this name (although is becoming pretty trendy ATM) and don't think it would lead to teasing at all, especially as it's now fairly mainstream. I definitely don't think of it as posh - and neither is Reuben IMHO. Maybe you're confusing biblical with posh Allatsea?

I teach 2 Gabriels at my inner city comp. Never encountered any teasing of them. One of them is a bit of a bully, the other is a delightful child!

I think that Gabriel is becoming quite popular, so unlikely to be a name that their peers would remark on.

I have a Gabriel and I am not posh at all, nor do I want people to think I am Confused

I personally really dislike it. I think it's on the same level as Reuben in terms of parents trying to give their children 'posh' names. Wouldn't do for us all to have the same opinions though!

So what if someone used "gay" as a nickname? Most people wouldn't find that a problem these days, would they? Just say "I'm not gay, but so what if I was? Nothing wrong with it :)"

I have taught two Gabriels - both shortened to Gabe in the past few years at an inner city primary. They aren't teased as far as I know. Go for it if you like it Smile

Love, love, love Gabriel and Gabe. Would be my choice if not for having 2 girls. Gabriella just not the same.

YY, actually one of the Gabriels I know has actually now left primary and is in Y8. So there are teenagers called that. I think 'Gabe' would be the more usual nn.

I"m sure sooner or later he'll get some idiot making gay jokes, but there's always some idiot making a stupid joke about something. Heartening to read. OH wanted DS1 and DS2 to be called Gabriel - I said 'no' for exactly these reasons. Now I am 16w with DC3 and he asked for Gabriel again at 5w pg!

Clearly he's really wanting this name. I like Gabriel as in Gabriel Oak. And our surname is quite Dickensian if that makes sense? Just I know OH really wants the name and so I have to convince myself.

The Gabriels I know have not encountered any name related problems, but they are all three primary school age. Anyone have experience of how it would work on a teenager? Especially, as noted above, the current fad in teen slang (too soon to know if that usage is flash in the pan or start of a shift).

I have a 13 year old Gabriel and he's shortened to Gabe or Gabe the Babe. His peers seem to think it's quite cool.
