yes, and it can happen quickly. My dd only 8, and whilst her name will do her fine for her life, and it would be silly to agonise over it.... it sounds a bit more like a name chosen in 2002 than it does like a name chosen in 2011. In my opinion anyway.

Oh, and I have a 'bel' ending name, which was considered so old lady and fuddy fuddy in the early 70s.

I know it's hard to imagine the names we perceive as being so lovely now ever sounding wrong - but they will!

They have 'stood the test of time' in that they come in and they go out of fashion, but imo they are already starting to go out of fashion! amongst the most fashionable,

I say this not with a knowing haughty fashionable sneer btw. My children have these kind of names. I was influenced by fashion.

My best friend is a Susan, but never (ever!) a Sue or a Susie. She has never actually banned those nicknames, but they conjure up such different images from Susan, you might as well call her Diedre or Janice.

In any case, if you call her something deeply unfashionable now, by the time your DD is an adult, the name will be bang on trend. This is what happened to me.

If you know the OP's style then it's not surprising to see her suggest Susan at all. SHe has also suggested Jean recently. She likes names that aren't fashionable yet. i think it's fair to say TT that none of your children's names are 'trendy'!!

I like Ulysses btw. Not every family could pull that one off. At the moment, you could go either way with the next child. Ulysses would fit in, and susan would also fit in, but not in the same family as they are two polar extremes of your taste.

Susan is fab. I don't like the recent prissy tendency to add A's to the ends of names to make them apparently more sophisticated / girly. I love Helen but not Helena, Sophie is nicer than Sophia and Olive cooler than Olivia.

Shem is great! If I'd have had a 4th girl I was going to call her Susie (or Jeannie or Eliza). Susan looks quite a masculine name to me and looks out of place with your others. Great names btw. How about Dinah if you like biblical?

For example, I live in a poor part of a northern city and if I had a DS and called him Ulysses he would get stick for it all his days, but if you live in London and your DCs are bound for Westminster School or similar, I can see that it wouldn't be looked at the same.

Shem is much nicer than Ulysses or Mortimer. Is it Hebrew or something?

Point being: 'tis amusing to 'test' your own name on here, but a bit daft to do it when actually actively and publicly looking for a name for your child. Especially if you've very recently published existing DCs names.

Oh, but that's just daft! Susan is fine for someone over, say, 30. There were no Susan's at school with me but it wouldn't have been out of place at all. 'tis just out of cycle (in a bad way) ATM and doesn't work with her DC's names as a sibset.

OP, are you the lady who has Ulysses and something else a trifle unusual as your boy shortlist? Don't know what your existing LOs names are but I can imagine Susan may be a little incongruous with them. If you like Ulysses for a boy, what about Persephone or something for a girl?

I fear Susan might feel plain and unadorned next to her siblings. Or relieved. I get the impression that YOU don't really like it though, so if that is the case, tell your DH that it's tough but you're not feeling Susan.

I think Susan is a lovely name. Makes me think of Susan Sarandon (most excellent actress).
