Worst spelling of perfectly ordinary names? Elyviya anyone?

I have met a Danyal, Daniol, Naiphthan, Caytie and an Alivia. Why do people consign their children to a life time of 'no, that's Daniel spelt...'? Any equally terrible ones out there?

I also knew a little girl called Noami. No, not Naomi. Noami. Pronounced "No-Amy."

Noami IS a name in its own right, I understand.

But Naomi is what everyone else must have called her always. It must have driven the poor girl round the bend.

I also worked with a Karen, pronounced Car-en and there is a distinct difference in the way is sounds.

Ka-ren has a short, staccato 'a' like in 'happy'

Car-en has a long, drawn out 'a' like in .. well, car :-)

It doesn't matter how many times I try saying it Car-en sounds the same to me as Ka-ren. is it really that different?

mybootsaremuddy There is a Sebasjun at our toddler group whos mum herd the name in a park and liked it so spelt the name how she herd it!! she was a little Blush when someone pointed out that what she herd was most probably a mispronunciation of SebastianGrin Shock OMG I nearly died laughing at this!!! What an absolute moron!!!! Grin Grin

I agree some are horrific but some are also legitimate spellings. Danyal for example is the Turkish spelling for the name Daniel. Maybe the parents were just trying to reflect the child's herratige in which case it is quite nice. At least it kind of looks like it sounds. As a Sinead (as in O'connor) I have had a life time of sympathetic looks in doctors waiting rooms when the name sin-ee-ad gets called out!

I also have a friend who knows a Luighcee I remember when her dd handed her the birthday invite from said child, she almost choked on her Brew. the poor child must hate her parents for that one, it takes twice as long to write it out and imagine telling every one 'im Lucy spelt Lu*~#@ohbollokstoit' Yet another perfectly 'normal' pretty name ruined by some idiot wanting to be 'different'

dirtymartini - I fear the registrars probably don't know the spellings either. Or the mums spell out how they think it should be. Let's put it this way, I don't think they had the same "rules" for names over there that we do here. Anything went!

I know a little girl called Destinee but it doesn't seem too bad compared to some of the others on here.

I get confused when I see Loren written down because I automatically assume its pronounced the same as Lauren but its not Blush

Also going off on a tangent slightly but I also know of a child called Chlamydia Shock

Strandednomore, but if an illiterate woman is just saying the name, and the registrar is the one writing it, wouldn't the registrar have to be the one choosing the weird spellings? Which seems even more odd ...

I knew an unfortunate 'Jasson'. Yep, Jason. Had to wear a namebadge with Jasson on at work and was in a perpetual hump at having to correct people who pronounced it phonetically.
