Ivy?

I have a feeling I know how this will go down, but just to check!

If it's not Ivy, it's going to be Kate, but I just can't help feeling that although Kate is liked, it's just a bit dull..

Thanks all Smile

She would be a Katherine - but basically a Kate from the off. I think it's a safer choice (obv a safe choice!) in terms of the likelihood of dd liking her name.

Do you like being a Kate, growing3rdbump? I'm always having sleepless nights about this (plus I'm 39 weeks so sleeplessness a hazard anyway!)

Ivy is a harsh old lady's name. It's not in the least bit pretty. Kate is much better.

Maybe, but she does warm to her theme with some enthusiasm when she particularly dislikes a name - starts off diplomatically, then develops her points with examples of people who had said name & always disliked it / nicknames which are undesirable, etc...

Maybe your Mum is just being non-committal as she doesn't want to influence you?

specialsmasher · 20/02/2011 10:12

I KNOW my mum will hate it! She has been lukewarm about every choice - I've given up running them by her...

Ivy is very sweet, but I do prefer Kate. It is classic and feminine.

That's quite funny, Notnowcato!

Funnily enough, niece is Iris, or she definitely would be...

Notnowcato · 19/02/2011 22:12

Trouble is, I just don't like the plant and so I can't really like the name. I used to work with an Ivy who called herself Babs ? she only ever used to admit to her 'real' name when she was drunk at office parties :)

How about Iris?

Jojay · 19/02/2011 20:06

I love Ivy - it's a contender if one of these twins I'm expecting is a girl.

pointydog · 19/02/2011 20:04

I like Kate a lot.

Don;t like Ivy at all.

PartialToACupOfMilo · 19/02/2011 20:03

I'm a Kate and I like it, but at one point I worked in an office of 10 with 4 of us called Kate. Anytime anyone started a sentence/question with 'Kate..' we'd all look up, it got really annoying. Your daughter could end up in a similar boat with the royal wedding this year and everything.
Ivy's lovely too though - very Hollywood :)

OliveMalay · 19/02/2011 19:58

Ivy is a lovely name. Prefer it to Kate.

TattyCatty · 19/02/2011 19:52

Oh and Kate is a lovely name, but there are many Kates and Katies around these days. Catherine, on the other hand, gives you lots of options and also happens to be my name :o.

specialsmasher · 19/02/2011 19:43

I agree with all you say, TattyCatty!

EverettUlyssesMcGill · 19/02/2011 19:42

Oh that's better. Ivy is a really lovely name, but it's my Grandmother's and relations with her are not that easy, though I love her very much.

So I don't feel I can use it. I'd like other people to, though! Smile

Kate is a very good name too.

TattyCatty · 19/02/2011 19:41

Mumsnet are on the ball tonight - thank God the twit (polite version of what I'm actually thinking) got deleted swiftly!

Violet and Lily also both fantastic names!

jezebelle · 19/02/2011 19:34

Ivy is beautiful, it was one on my girl list, but it so happens i'm having a boy. If it were a girl i was gonna use Ivy Violet or Lily Violet :)
