Do you love your name?

When i was growing up, i hated my name because i was the only child in my family without an english name, i made up names for myself and yearned for one, my dad felt pity on me after much threateningbegging from me that he gave me one when i was 7, i was not impressed[
there were 3 girls i already knew with the same name but it was the best catholic name he could find, i shortened it, it suits me and i love it,used it from that day

As for my traditional name, it happens to be one of the most beautiful unusual names in my country and my father couldn't have done better, and now that i live in europe it is exotic, i thanked my dad last time i saw him,so, if you had to choose your own name, what would you have named yourself?if you are happy with the one you have,fine..

I love my name, although I wanted to be called Rikki when I was younger Confused.

I am Manon.

ConstanceFelicity · 18/02/2011 10:30

Heather is a lovely name!

5GoMadOnAZ650 · 18/02/2011 10:11

I love my name, I'm a Sophie which I think is quite classic and doesn't age.

BarbieLovesKen · 18/02/2011 10:04

No, I dont - I hated it as a child and would often ask my (poor) mother why she named me this and pretend I was called something else.

Oddly enough though I think I would love it if it was slightly different - Im Nicola which I hate but love Nicole Sad. Im known by everyone as Nikki though, and I like that.

I think Diana is beautiful.

BlessedAssurance · 18/02/2011 08:20

:o Norman you would be surprised, i know one who is gorgeous and i liked it because of her, if my dad had given it to me i would have taken it,,but i do not look like a Heather,,

All these names you say you don't like were some of my dream names i came up with,,i would have given anything to be called Pearl, which incidently my husband calls me now as a pet name,

Diana coming from where i come from, whats not to like?however i do get where you are coming from notjust.

Tyson i love Noah and Isaac, but i have seen that MN do not like Noah, where i live my baby would the only Noah i konw, Norwegians have their own names, they are very few Noahs around,

Dashiell, any info on the name?

thnx and i think Lucy is a lovely name.
Bruno for a girl is def unusual Taff, only know of boys,

NormanTheForeman · 17/02/2011 23:09

Well, Norman is obviously lovely!

However, my alter ego is called Heather. What a disaster of a name! It's like a heavy cushion falling to earth! Who would want it???? Hmm

NotJustKangaskhan · 17/02/2011 23:07

Similar to you, I spent quite some time in my childhood coming up with names I liked better than my own. I had some strange ones.

I really dislike my first name - it's Diana. Most people I've talked say it's a lovely name, but I just don't like it. I don't like the myths behind it, I certainly don't like the Die and In-Diana jokes (I grew up in the States, Ohio specifically which is right next to Indiana), and I also dislike that my mom picked it off the TV as I was "suppose to be a boy". I've considered changing it several times, but now it's on everything so I'm more moving to use one of my middle names (have two, but the first is the also name of my husband's sister) but that one has bad connection too (The name is Pearl and when I was little, if I got too upset, I was called poor pitiful Pearl). And people wonder why I prefer to be called Ms. [Surname]!

Probably because of my issues with my name, I put a lot of thought into names for my children, who all have two middle names like me.

Mumcentreplus · 17/02/2011 22:48

My sister got the french names Nicole Germaine Grin

Mumcentreplus · 17/02/2011 22:42

My name is very 70s and yet unoffensive ..my mum eventually chose Karen and tbh it's a cool name..better than the middle name imo..I'm Pure... break of day Wink..can't expect less considering I'm a 70s child

TaffetaCat · 17/02/2011 22:39

My name was unusual when I was growing up, its slightly more common now. I liked having an unusual name and people spelling it wrong never really bothered me. I chose a similarly unusual but not unheard of name for DD.

DH and I chose Bruno for DD, but obv she was a girl. I was very glad as the (awful) film came out shortly after.

brightcopperkettles · 17/02/2011 22:32

I don't mind my name, but Mum chose an unusual spelling because she didn't like the hard 'k' at the start of the usual spelling Confused. I hate having to spell it when people put random letters in there regardless.

I would swap my middle name for my first (if I was naming myself :)). Although popular now, I was very unusual with it at school when everyone's middle name was Ann/e.

muggglewump · 17/02/2011 22:32

I like it more than I used to, and I appreciate I have options with shortenings.

I'm Jennifer, known as Jenny/Jen, but always use Jennifer when it's official.
It's one of those names MN approves of.
Can be anything, PM or cleaner (I'm a cleaner!), and has a choice of shortenings, but it is boring.

Lockets
I love Dashiell.
My boy's name is Tristan, but secretly I want to call a boy Dash.

I have a daughter, and she'll always be an only but if I can convince anyone to use Dash, I will!

bibbitybobbityhat · 17/02/2011 22:29

My fave names are

Sheherazade, Dorothy, Suzannah, Rosanna, Zinnia.

Ralph (pronounced Ralph not Rafe), Stan, Edward, Robert, George.

Hate my name (think v famous US President's wife name, early 60s).

Trinaluce · 17/02/2011 22:25

People who knew me before I got married call me Trina, people who know me through my husband call me Pet, as that's what he calls me. The name's a feminine variation of Peter, I was born on St Peter's day and St Peter had a lot of meaning to my folks.

My middle name's Lucy (great grandmother's name) and my dad (and ONLY my dad) calls me Trinaluce Smile

exoticfruits · 17/02/2011 22:18

I like mine, a nice classic and nothing to be embarrassed about.

seaweedhead · 17/02/2011 22:15

Don't love it or hate it - its a bit boring and common (was very popular in the early 80s).

My brother has a unisex name and he hates it. We gave DS a unisex name and I'm really hoping that he won't grow up to hate it because I love it.

thisisyesterday · 17/02/2011 22:11

my 5 faves names would be:

boys:

Linus
Gabriel
Asa
Nico
Josiah

girls:

Frances
Mavis
Zelda
Primrose
Ramona

Trinaluce · 17/02/2011 22:10

I hate the fact that I've spent my entire life spelling it, when my sisters have names that don't have that problem. But aside from that I love it and the reason behind it :)

(It's Petrina btw)

WickedWitchSouthWest · 17/02/2011 22:09

I've grown into my name but it's still unusual for me to use my whole name (I'm Emma-Louise). It's a big old name to saddle a small person with. However, there's a nice little family story behind it and I wouldn't change it at all :)

thisisyesterday · 17/02/2011 22:09

when i was little i hated my nakme because it was very common.

I yearned to be called Polly, or Daisy, or Suzie!

Now I actually really like my name, it's quite pretty ad I don't know any babies with it at all

Goober · 17/02/2011 22:07

I like mine, though it annoys me when people can't pronounce/ spell it.

Gina.
